100% Match for NYCPM Seniors
Michael J. Trepal, DPM, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Academic Dean, led NYCPM’s live match ceremony on March 17th. Per school tradition, as seniors filed in, they each chose a random envelope with another classmate’s name on it. Then another match ensued; as they received their own envelopes from their classmates with their own matches, the seniors each contributed $1 to a money jar, to which faculty had already contributed. The last senior to receive the envelope with their own match wins the jar.

(L-R) Student Services Dean Lisa Lee, Dr. Michael Trepal, and Rebecca Salerno |
This year, Rebecca Salerno, who matched at Community Medical Center in NJ, won the jar, and Dr. Trepal announced that 100% of the eligible students of the Class of 2023 matched, and that most matched with their top choices of residency programs. A champagne celebration ensued!

NH Legislators Moving to Reject Governor's Licensing Overhaul Plan
Republican and Democratic budget writers in the House are moving to reject nearly all of the controversial and sweeping professional licensing changes Gov. Chris Sununu is seeking. Lawmakers from both parties indicated earlier this month they would oppose at least some of Sununu’s proposed changes in response to opposition from professional groups. Jennifer Sartori, DPM, chair of the Board of Podiatry, cautioned against merging her board with the Board of Medicine and Medical Review subcommittees. The podiatry board has been in existence for over 50 years, she said.
|
|
Dr. Jennifer Sartori |
“Podiatrists have unique challenges and concerns that are distinct from those of other medical professionals, and we need a dedicated board that can address these issues,” Dr. Sartori told the committee. “We need a clear and accessible process for licensure and regulation and discipline. And I think that will become more difficult for podiatrists to navigate through if it is merged with the Board of Medicine.”

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
Student Loan Concepts to Know During Tax Season
With tax season approaching, many people are focused on gathering all the tax forms to make sure they don’t miss the April deadline; however, few will pause to inquire how their tax filing could impact their student loan payment. Fortunately, there are many ways that borrowers can get creative with income reporting come tax season that could impact their student loan payments substantially.
1. Income Driven Repayment Plans
Income Driven Repayment (IDR) plans are available to all Direct loan borrowers with the federal government, and they allow borrowers to make a payment based off their income and household size; NOT the total amount of loans outstanding. There are several different types of IDR plans including PAYE, REPAYE, IBR, and ICR. We won’t dive into the nuances of the various repayment plans but the important thing to understand is how they report your income.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1A | |
From: Lloyd Smith, DPM
Jon Hultman’s experience and wisdom is apparent in his comments. Podiatry has faced similar issues now facing the board certification process. At this point, a big tent approach is needed. All representative groups must be included and a skilled facilitator is needed. All relevant issues need discussion.
Without presenting an opinion, the solutions should come from this group. Having chaired a similar process, the interactive group needs to commit time, resources, and a deep desire to find compromises. The task is not easy. The need is apparent.
Lloyd Smith, DPM, Newton, MA

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1B | |
From: Alan Sherman, DPM
Isn’t it remarkable how we can depend on our leaders year after year to cut through the noise and have us see an issue in a new way? Thank you Jon Hultman, DPM, for making that important point – We do have standardized residency programs in podiatric medicine and surgery now and at least for graduates of those programs, there should be one certifying board that certifies them as podiatric physician and surgeons.
If ABPM and ABFAS can’t be compelled by all the voices in our profession calling for a merging of their boards – maybe we should form a new board that covers podiatric medicine and surgery and represents ALL graduates of these standardized 3 year programs. It would and should include CAQs for those with advanced fellowship training and/or the ability to demonstrate competence in subspecialties. The existing boards would continue to represent those trained before the 3 year residency curriculum came to be.
Alan Sherman, DPM, Boca Raton, FL

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1C | |
From: David Secord, DPM
Once upon a time, there was a podiatrist of some note who originally hailed from Michigan. After being mentioned in one of Lee Iacocca’s books (when he was at Ford Motors), this podiatrist (unfortunately) moved to the Corpus Christi area. Mr. Iacocca overheard this podiatrist sitting behind him, talking to his partner about capitalizing upon the UAW provision in their contract which allowed for 6 weeks of paid convalescent care after foot surgery and how they would use this to do a digital procedure on a UAW member. When they were about to go back to work, another digit would be done, and then another, and so on.
With the extended time off, a number of these UAW members would actually have other jobs during the convalescent period and collect two pay checks. Mr. Iacocca got off the plane, met with...

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CODINGLINE CORNER) -PART 1A | |
From: John Moglia, DPM
I learned the hard way that CPT 11750 will be reimbursed only once per lifetime for an individual toe. This does not take into consideration that a different nail border on the same toe can become symptomatic years later. Is it then appropriate to bill CPT 11730 as an alternative after an appeal has failed?
John Moglia, DPM, Berkeley Heights, NJ

|
| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CODINGLINE CORNER) - PART 1B | |
From: Jeffrey Kass, DPM
I don’t know the process whereby CPT codes and LCDs get changed. But, I would like to chime in on this 11750 LCD code change.
1. Is there or is there not an announcement of a code change or LCD change where there is a way to write in and express opinions pro or con the change?
2. Why isn’t the profession, as a whole, more involved in collectively doing something about this?
3. I would think – podiatrists are the number one users of this code, with dermatologists coming in second.
4. The unfairness of the CPT code LCD is that a patient can...

| PODIATRISTS IN THE ARMED FORCES | |
From: Kenneth L Hatch, DPM
Please note my feet are so flat, you could not put a dollar bill under my arch. I went to basic training 1 July 1969. We ran in COMBAT BOOTS every morning on the paved streets on the way to the chow hall. My severe "flat feet" got me a "B" profile but still 1-A, fully fit for service. I got interested in podiatry while on active duty. Later, I was on the panel for CHAMPUS insurance and I got friendly with a couple of recruiters who had me overrule some of the Army family docs who were rejecting recruits who were completely asymptomatic. One potential recruit was a high school track star.
My theory was IF a potential recruit was asymptomatic, drug free, and had no criminal record, flat feet not withstanding, then let them take a stab at the military. I live in Annapolis, MD and see Naval Academy students running all around town in "Running Shoes". If they only knew how easy they have it. I still have a pair of fifty year old combat boots. I got 490 on my PT test! 300 was a pass with 500 max available. .
