HOSPITAL PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS - PART 1 |
OH Podiatrist's Wound Care Center Named Center of Excellence
Urbana Wound Care Center received the Robert A. Warriner III Center of Excellence 2017 award Healogics, the nation’s largest provider of advanced wound care services. Wound care is the management of chronic and acute wounds, said Dr. Eric Anderson, a podiatrist with Mercy Health. That could include diabetic, traumatic or post-surgical wounds, as well as burns.

There are different wounds that require different types of treatment and it can be as simple as a basic cleaning of the wound,” he said. The Urbana center provides a variety of treatments, including hyperbaric chamber therapy, Anderson said. He works with the Mercy Health-Urbana Hospital and Springfield Regional Medical Center.

FL Podiatrist Introduces Heel Defender
Defender Operations has introduced its new Heel Defender product line of innovative shoe orthotics made in the USA. Through patented technology and innovative design, Heel Defender orthotics are bio-engineered to assist in the management of pathologies that cause heel pain.
|
Dr. Jason Hanft |
Defender Operations, LLC was founded by Jason R. Hanft, DPM, a prominent Miami foot and ankle surgeon with over 30 years of experience. Dr. Hanft also has a biomedical engineering background and is the Principal Inventor. Heel Defender was born out of a very personal experience when Dr. Hanft accidentally shattered his own heel into multiple pieces. He suffered an interarticular calcaneal fracture, which caused chronic heel pain and limited mobility.

PA Podiatrist 5.5-16 Year Jail Term for Secretly Filming Women
Former East Shore podiatrist David Todoroff admitted that for years he hid a cell phone in the bathrooms of his office and his home so he could film women undressing. On Tuesday, a state Superior Court panel found that the 5 1/3- to 16-year prison sentence a Dauphin County judge slapped on the doctor fits those crimes.

New Human Organ Identified
Scientists say they have found a new organ that, among other things, may have implications for understanding how cancer spreads throughout the body. The organ, called the interstitium, lies just below the skin (which is the body's largest organ) and is a patchwork of interconnected, fluid-filled compartments, anatomically distinct from the rest of the body. Scientists believe the interstitium may act as a shock absorber to keep tissues from tearing during day-to-day functioning.
The organ went unnoticed for so long due to the way researchers examine tissue samples, which are thinly sliced and treated with chemicals. Because the fluid was accidentally drained from the interstitium in the process, scientists thought they were looking at dense connective tissue. Scientists think the fluid-filled compartments - which drain into the lymphatic system - may explain why cancer cells that invade the layer are able to easily spread to the lymph nodes.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Areas of Financial Waste to Cut at Your Practice - Part 4
Here are a few ways to reduce financial waste, according to practice management and accounting professionals from across the country:
4. Monitor Billing
"The net cost of billing and collection goes beyond direct expenses related to billing - things like personnel salaries, benefits, and supplies - or the percentage paid to outside billing companies. More importantly, monies uncollected related to poor performance must be taken into consideration to deteremjine the real total cost of billing an collections. Having said that, it's critical that practices have checks and balances in place to track and trend performance to assure that all monies are collected for services performed. - Jose Carrersas, vice president and COO, PropMD Practice Management, Pinecrest, FL.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) |
From: Joel Lerner, DPM
Unfortunately, due to the hurricane in Puerto Rico where many of the anesthetics and IV solutions are manufactured, there is a severe back-order of these necessary medications. MD Buying Group is doing everything in their power to keep them in stock. Yesterday, we were able to purchase 100 2% Xylocaine plain, but unfortunately at 3 times the price. We will continue to bring in these medications as long as necessary to supply our members. We do have Xylocaine with epi also available.
We will try our best to accommodate non-members if they are in need of the medications.
Joel Lerner, DPM, President, MD Buying Group

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (REVELANT RESEARCH) -PART 1A |
From: Doug Richie, DPM
Dr. Kesselman appropriately calls upon our profession to train students, residents, and academic podiatrists to conduct research and provide “counterpoints” to systematic reviews such as the recent article published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. I must point out that two of the best randomized clinical trials published (cited in the BJSM paper) which studied custom foot orthoses and treatment of plantar heel pain were conducted by podiatrists:
Landorf KB, Keenan AM, Herbert RD. Effectiveness of foot orthoses to treat plantar fasciitis: a randomized trial. Arch Intern Med. 2006; 166(12):1305–1310.
Wrobel JS, Fleischer AE, Crews RT, Jarrett B, Najafi B. A randomized controlled trial of custom foot orthoses for the treatment of plantar heel pain. J Am Podiatr Med Assoc. 2015; 105(4):281-94.
Both of these studies had the same conclusions as the recent BJSM study which failed to show any superiority of custom foot orthoses in the treatment of plantar heel pain. There are many reasons why these studies fail to show the outcomes we all experience in day-to-day clinical practice.
In regard to Dr. Kesselman’s call, the best researchers in our own profession have already attempted to provide “counterpoint” in the academic arena and have unfortunately failed to show the superiority of custom foot orthotic therapy to treat plantar heel pain. Instead of relying on rigid statistical analysis of large groups of patients, perhaps we can take a new approach which identifies sub-groups of patients who actually do respond to custom foot orthotic therapy in a very positive way?
Doug Richie, DPM, Seal Beach, CA

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (RELEVANT RESEARCH) - PART 1B |
From: Elliot Udell, DPM
Dr. Kesselman and others, including me, have questioned why we do not have ongoing research studies in the area of foot orthoses and biomechanics. What fuels our frustration is that just as we know fish live in water and birds fly, we know that properly designed foot orthoses can help many patients with many foot conditions including some that cause heel pain. Just today, a patient came in to my office to have me make a new set of custom orthotics because the old ones wore out and his heel pain was returning. He would not be willing to pay hundreds of dollars for something that was not helping him. This is a common scenario for all of us.
The answer is that the podiatry labs should meet with the research people at our schools and together fund research on biomechanics and foot orthotics. I would donate to that cause. It’s an investment, and if enough papers show that orthotics are helpful, then we can begin to ask insurance companies to pay for them.
Elliot Udell, DPM, Hicksville, NY
