PM NEWS QUICK POLL

At the recent APMA House of Delegates, outgoing APMA president R. Daniel Davis, DPM discussed the potential advantages of changing the name of APMA to more accurately reflect what we do. A straw poll of APMA delegates favored the proposal by almost 90%.

Quick Poll

Should APMA change its name to the American Association of Foot & Ankle Specialists (AAFAS)?

PODIATRISTS AND HUMANITARIAN EFFORTS
Haitian Charity Fiunded by NY Podiatrist

Kindest Hearts Academie was founded in 2011 by Wading River podiatrist Dr. Patricia Nicholas. She said it was created to offer an opportunity for students whose parents might not be able to afford to educate them at Haitian schools. Dr. Nicholas, who was born in Haiti and moved to the United States at age 14, said she didn’t return to her home country until after it was hit by a devastating earthquake in 2010. While on a medical mission there, she realized many people needed more than just medical help. After about a year of helping numerous families pay to send their children to school, Dr. Nicholas said she decided to open one of her own.

Dr. Patricia Nicholas

“Before the school was built, we used a local church,” Dr. Nicholas said. “It was a one-room school for grades K-6. Kindergarten was in the back and sixth grade was outside. It was like ‘Little House on the Prairie.’ ”The school started with 60 students and now has more than 200, as well as 40 employees. Dr. Nicholas said a second story and an 11th-grade class will hopefully be added next year.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY
WI Podiatrist Applauds Innovative Mobile Services Program

Fond du Lac Fire/Rescue, the Fond du Lac County Public Health Department, and Agnesian HealthCare are once again joining forces to launch a new program with help from the Agnesian HealthCare Foundation. The one-year pilot, being called Innovative Mobile Services Program, was implemented March 21 and engages Fond du Lac Fire/Rescue paramedics with people in the community who have requested to be in the program or have been referred by a doctor, pharmacist, or other person in the medical field.

Dr. Michael DeGere

"It has been incredibly rewarding to work with our partners to create this innovative program," said Michael DeGere, DPM, Agnesian HealthCare vice president of Population Health Management. "We know that individuals prefer to stay within the comforts of their own home and, if possible, avoid having to return to the hospital, especially when facing chronic health concerns. Through this new approach, we can reduce the stress involved in meeting their specific needs, reduce their overall cost of care, and determine the most appropriate level of care for them."

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY
Tuba-playing Canadian Podiatrist Leads Vancouver Funeral Brass Band

Once he reached a certain age, a point in life when the inescapable reality of mortality sunk in, Dr. Marc Lindy decided he’d like to have a brass band mark his passing. “For most of my adult life, or at least since I realized one of these days I’d be going, I’ve wanted to have a brass band at my funeral,” Lindy said. “Maybe it was that early James Bond film (1973’s Live and Let Die), with the New Orleans funeral, that goes back a long time, but maybe that’s it.”

Dr. Marc Lindy (Far right)

Music funerals, with brass instruments prominent, were once ubiquitous across cultures and the continent, he said. Lindy has some fantastic archival photos of First Nations brass bands from all over B.C. — Hazelton, Sechelt, Haida Gwaii, Lillooet, Victoria, Ladner, you name it — but the natives’ practice of playing the instruments at funerals seems to have petered out in the 1980s, he said.

PODIATRIC PRODUCTS IN THE NEWS
TX Podiatrist Uses Tenex® Procedure for Eliminating Heel and Achilles Pain

Gabriel Maislos, DPM uses Tenex – a minimally invasive, non-surgical approach for eliminating scar tissue, relieving plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendonitis. "We've seen great success with the Tenex procedure, which addresses the root cause of these conditions: scar tissue," says Dr. Maislos,  "By removing the source of the pain and stimulating the body's own healing response, patients are able to recover and return to normal activity levels much sooner than previously possible."

Dr. Gabriel Maislos

Maislos points out that the Tenex procedure requires only a small (1/4" long) incision, under local anesthetic. A micro tip device is inserted and guided through the use of ultrasound imaging to deliver precisely targeted tissue repair, without damaging healthy tissue. Treatment takes only 20-30 minutes, and the incision requires no stitches. Patients are back to normal activities within 6-8 weeks.

PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW
OH Podiatrist Charged with Groping Employee, Exposing Himself at Clinic

A grand jury indicted a Westlake doctor accused of groping and exposing himself to an employee last year at his podiatry clinic. Dr. Anthony G. Polito, 53, of Avon is charged with gross sexual imposition, kidnapping, and public indecency in the Feb. 26, 2016 incident at his clinic on Health Campus Drive. Polito is scheduled to appear for an April 11 arraignment in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS) - PART 1A
From: Marc Jay Pinsky, DPM

I feel a possible name change for the APMA is a bad idea! It is not in our profession’s best long-term interests. The name: American Podiatric Medical Association carries with it “professionalism” – as does the: AOA, AMA, and ADA. “Podiatric” can be considered all encompassing! Whereas “foot and ankle” connotes a finite scope. No room is left for professional expansion. If the name change goes through, then any state wishing to expand their scope of practice into the leg or above, will be hampered by our national association’s name.

“Why should we allow you to treat into the lower leg, when your own national association states you are just foot and ankle specialists?” How will we answer that? In Virginia, we are allowed to treat wounds on the entire “lower extremity”. We plan other scope expansions in the...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS)
From: George Jacobson, DPM

Although this is what podiatric training entails, as podiatrists it would be unethical and deceiving to the public. As a former Ethics Chairperson (1990s) for Broward County Podiatric Medical Association, it is both unethical and a violation which could lead to a fine to advertise or be listed in a directory without identifying that you are a podiatrist. The individual would be reported to the State Board. Simply using DPM after your name would suffice, but listing your name as Dr. Top Surgeon would not. It's a bit disturbing reading this.

Saturday, Allen Jacobs, DPM, lectured at Westside Regional Medical Center in Plantation, FL about ethics. He specifically pointed out to the residents in attendance the power and responsibilities imparted by...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CODINGLINE CORNER)
From: Tom Silver, DPM

We ran into this situation with two children last December. We called and got prior authorization on Rx orthotics. We have an internal form for prior authorization calls that has diagnosis, orthotic codes, name of rep talked to, etc., and scan this into the patient's chart. We were told that these two patients had met their deductible and the orthotics were covered under their policy at 100%, but got rejections on the claims that this was "not a covered service under their plan." My office promptly called the insurance company who told us "sorry, you were given misinformation by the rep." We asked for the claims to be reviewed, and after they listened at their recorded prior authorization calls, they promptly paid us for the orthotics.

Both parents of one of these children also needed orthotics. As all were on the same policy, we automatically assumed they would also have 100% coverage like the rep said their child had.   Since we didn't call on the parents to check their coverage, their claims were rejected! They are neighbors and when I told the father that his insurance wouldn't pay on their orthotics, he quickly responded, "well I guess you'll just have to eat the charges"! We are currently negotiating a reduced fee for the orthotics they got in mid-December!
