DMU-CPMS Achieves 100% Match for 21st Straight Year
Fourth-year podiatric medical students in Des Moines University's College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery (DMU-CPMS) celebrated Match Day on March 17 after achieving 100% residency placement for the College's 21st consecutive year. Dean Kevin Smith, DPM, PhD, Sean Grambart, DPM, Assistant dean for clinical affairs, and CPMS faculty hosted a virtual celebration prior to the fourth-year students finding out their match location.
|
|
Dr. Kevin Smith |
They were joined by Des Moines University Alumni Board Members Kelly John, DPM, MHA and Marc Jones, DPM, who offered advice to the soon-to-be graduates as they enter the next phase of their careers. Dean Smith said the College's sustained match success is due to the hard work of students, faculty, and staff. “We expect a 100% match when residency positions exceed the number of graduates, but we are extremely proud to have achieved this benchmark during periods when there was a deficit in residency programs,” he said.

Foot Problems are Common Among Troops: Army Podiatrist
“Foot and ankle injuries are prevalent and significant health concerns for military personnel, with potential long-term consequences,” Lt. Col. Michael Taye, DPM, chief of podiatry at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and consultant to the Army Surgeon General, told Military Times. Maintaining foot health, therefore, is of the utmost importance for troops on active duty, Dr. Taye added. Failure to do so can result in major issues that linger throughout one’s service or for a lifetime after separating from the armed forces.
“Active-duty military personnel are particularly susceptible to foot and ankle injuries due to the physically demanding nature of their work, which often involves long marches, running, jumping, and rucking with heavy loads,” Taye continued. “Some of the most common foot and ankle injuries in active-duty service members include ankle sprains, plantar fasciitis, stress fractures, Achilles tendonitis, shin splints, blisters, and ingrown toenails.”

MA Podiatrist Discusses What to Look for When Buying Walking Shoes
Nothing will put a damper on an exciting day spent exploring a city more than an uncomfortable pair of shoes. So whether you’re planning a trip to a new city or you live in a city 24/7, you need a pair or two of comfortable walking shoes that don’t skimp on style. According to Alissa Kuizinas, DPM, a board-certified podiatrist, the best shoes for walking in the city have a generous toe box, flexible soles, and the right amount of cushioning to keep your feet supported mile after mile.
|
|
Dr. Alissa Kuizinas |
If you’re opting for closed-toe styles, then “one of the best features to look for in a comfy walking shoe is a wide, foot-shaped toe box,” Dr. Kuizinas says. To make that easier, she suggests that you “look for a shoe brand that has a rounded shape at the toes versus a narrow, triangular shape” — that means it’s best to leave your pointed-toe ballet flats at home.

Vaporox Announces FDA Clearance for Its Wound Care Medical Device
Vaporox, a Denver-based medical device company, has received clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration for its next generation VHT-200 medical device system for healing chronic wounds, which are wounds that do not respond to conventional wound treatment, meeting a significant unmet medical need for millions of sufferers of diabetic foot ulcers.
|
|
Dr. Dustin Kruse |
The company’s Medical Director, Dustin Kruse, DPM is a double-board-certified podiatrist in private practice. As Primary Investigator for Vaporox’s second and third clinical studies, Dr. Kruse said, “Overseeing the clinical study was eye-opening. We consistently observed incredible healing in 20 weeks or less, even on the most complex patients, with the only variable being the addition of VHT.”

3 Digital Payment Trends that Healthcare Providers Need to Know
A streamlined digital experience is something consumers have come to expect in every area of their lives – yet traditionally, healthcare has lagged in this area. Fortunately for providers, some changes loom on the horizon that could begin to reverse this trend. Following are three digital payment trends that have already begun and will continue to accelerate in the coming years.
3. Deeper integration of providers’ payments systems with digital wallets: Digital wallets, represented by services such as Google Pay, Apple Pay, Venmo, and Cash App, are another form of payment that has become increasingly popular with consumers. However, these services do not come with the application programming interfaces (APIs) needed to seamlessly integrate data into providers’ payment information systems.

Query: ABNs For Ingrown Nail Procedures
I billed for an ingrown nail procedure, denied for “too many services.” The patient has Medicare. The denied procedure was done in January 2023. The same toe had the same procedure done in November of 2021. The recent rule change regarding this took effect on June 6, 2022. We are appealing this denial. Are others running into this problem? I am wondering if my colleagues are having Medicare and Medicare Advantage patients sign an ABN at the time of service. There is no modifier -76 or-77 allowed as this was taken out in a follow-up revision.
PM News Subscriber
Response: This new, and egregious policy, in my opinion, is and will create more and more of these issues. I would appeal with records and make a note that the policy just changed and the prior procedure was done before the policy took effect. Don't hold your breath, but appeal and make note of the border, the digit affected, and that this procedure was later than what the policy cites. If this is a CPT 11750, you might have a harder time as they now expect these to be permanent, period. I would have a ABN signed and make it clear it is Medicare policy, not your office policy, and that they have changed the rules for allowing medically necessary care.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1A | |
From: Jon A. Hultman, DPM, MBA
I think many of the postings concerning board certification on PM News miss an important point about our specialty. All of today’s residency programs are standardized, three-year, comprehensive programs, which include both medicine and surgery. With a few exceptions, the vast majority of those practicing in our specialty provide both surgical and non-surgical care. It seems illogical to me that a DPM today would need to choose between being board-certified in medicine or board-certified in surgery when they are trained to do both, and in practice, they do both.
Yes, some residency programs and fellowships provide more advanced types of surgical procedures, but every medical and surgical specialty has those same exceptions. It seems to me that after completing a three-year comprehensive medical/surgical residency program, there would be one certifying board that certifies DPMs as podiatric physician and surgeons.
Jon A. Hultman, DPM, MBA, Sacramento, CA

|
| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1B | |
From: Noel Barnett, DPM
I agree with Dr. Perez that the problem is access. I believe that every DPM should be given the opportunity to sit for the boards. I think that it's a travesty that someone graduates from podiatry school with thousands of dollars in student loans and is denied the opportunity to make a living in order to pay back such a large student debt. The ABPM considers anyone who did a RPR & PSR residency to be ineligible for their boards, but you are eligible if you did a POR & RPR or POR & PSR residency. I always wondered how they came up with such a decision.
The ABMSP and other boards have been a lifesaver for many podiatrists who want to practice their profession but who are being denied to do so, because they are not certified by ABPM or ABFAS. You do not need to lower the standards for board certification but everyone should be given the opportunity to take the exam if they wish to do so. Podiatrists are leaving the profession and the enrollments for the schools are down. We are driving people away from the profession.
Noel Barnett, DPM, Stafford, VA

RE: Board Certification and Leverage
From: Bret Ribotsky, DPM
Leverage - as you begin looking for leverage within podiatric organizations to participate in the re-creation of our board certification system, I believe it’s prudent that we all begin by looking at the financial status of each of these organizations. The following links are publicly available financial data for some of the not-for-profit organizations involved:
I believe that once this data is reviewed for assets and expenses, we can look for opportunities to work together, and who knows, we may find an opportunity to reduce expenses of the practitioners once an economy of scale is reached.
Bret Ribotsky, DPM, Fort Lauderdale, FL
