ACFAS Launches National Foot and Ankle Registry
The American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS) has announced the launch of the ACFAS National Foot and Ankle Registry (NFAR), a groundbreaking clinical data registry designed to empower foot and ankle surgeons with meaningful insights into surgical outcomes, drive quality improvement, and support evidence-based decision-making. ACFAS partnered with IQVIA, a global leader in clinical research services and technology solutions to the life sciences industry, to develop NFAR. The registry provides ACFAS members with an essential tool to track their own surgical outcomes, compare results with peers nationwide, and contribute to research that advances foot and ankle care.

| HOSPITAL PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS | |
MT Podiatrist Performs Sidney Health Center's First Total Ankle Replacement
Jennifer Gravos-Bauer, DPM achieved a milestone for herself and Sidney Health Center this month when she performed the facility’s first total ankle replacement surgery. It was the first total ankle replacement surgery led by Dr. Gravos-Bauer, who trained during her residency at Sanford Health in Fargo before joining Sidney Health Center in September 2022.

Gravos-Bauer performed the surgery March 19 after spending the previous evening walking through the procedure with surgical staff who would be assisting in an ankle replacement for the first time. Following surgery, patients typically undergo a rehabilitation program, with return to daily activities over several months. Gravos-Bauer said it takes four weeks for the ankle to heal to the point at which the patient can resume walking.

WV Podiatrist Joins United Hospital Center Medical Staff
Benjamin Orndoff, DPM has joined the Orthopaedic Services at United Hospital Center. He comes to Bridgeport from Monroeville, PA, where he had a solo practice for more than 10 years, managing three clinic locations and providing care at two nursing homes. He was also a staff podiatrist at the Westmoreland County VA Outpatient Clinic in Greensburg, PA.

Dr. Orndorff earned a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree from the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine. He earned a certificate of podiatric orthopedics and another in podiatric surgery, both from the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Lebanon, Pennsylvania, where he did his residency. He is board certified in podiatric primary care by the American Board of Multiple Specialties in Podiatry.

Gretchen Lawrence, DPM from Foothills Podiatry in Shelby, NC served as a guest lecturer at Gardner Webb University (GWU) in Boiling Springs, NC on March 26, 2025. She has partnered with the University and has been delivering her presentation, “Discover Podiatry” for the past four years in attempts with other national podiatry organizations to increase awareness in our profession.

Dr. Lawrence’s suture workshop was made possible with the help of the American Association of Colleges of Podiatric Medicine, and donations from some of the 11 podiatry schools and a few other private companies who support podiatry. Her lectures are a part of the University’s class: "Readiness in the Natural Sciences". In the fall of 2024, a GWU student enrolled at the Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine, proving that together podiatrists can help to increase awareness and graduate more podiatrists in the future.

Here’s how to create a comprehensive, protective document, following Associated Press style guidelines.
7. Communicate and Train
Introducing the handbook is only the first step. Hold a training session to walk employees through key points, such as confidentiality protocols, harassment reporting, and safety procedures. Revisit topics during staff meetings, especially when regulations or internal policies change. When employees fully understand the rules—and the reasons behind them—they are more likely to comply.

RE: Depression, Burnout, and Anxiety

With all the talk about depression, burnout, and anxiety, it was interesting to read yesterday's Becker 's Hospital Review which documented the variation of these manifestations based on medical specialty. Perhaps there is some organization which should collect this data for all healthcare providers, not limiting this to MD/DO specialties.
Podiatrists, dentists, nurses, and other professional licensed healthcare providers all work in very tense and demanding professions, and this survey points to the fact that professionals are not immune to psychiatric disorders. It's high time that our professional associations work together to provide more publicity and programs to deal with this.

DVT and pulmonary embolism are concerns for any patient immobilized or non-weight-bearing regardless of whether or not surgery was performed. The sophomoric suggestion that a podiatrist has no obligation to recognize the signs or symptoms of thromboembolic disease because limited licensure is both a dangerous thing for the patient and podiatrist as it is hardly likely to serve as a useful defense in a malpractice case.
As was noted in a previous correspondence to PM News, it is very easy to, in retrospect, list multiple factors which is taken in aggregate to place a patient in a higher risk category of thromboembolic disease. In my opinion, this is a problem with risk assessment scales such as the Caprini score. Many patients, if not most, have some factors predisposing them to ...
