MN Podiatrist & Shoe Designer Remains Active in Medical Education
Marion Parke is a popular shoe label not only because it's a trusted brand of First Lady Jill Biden — though her public appearances surely helped spread the word — but also because it was founded by a podiatrist. Medical-grade insoles offer stability and structure. Marion Parke, DPM is a podiatric surgeon trained in reconstructive rear-foot and ankle surgery.

Dr. Marion Parke (photo: Caitlin Abrams) |
When she embarked on a mission to provide women with stylish yet discreetly comfortable shoes in 2016, the task was more of a side gig. A year and a half later, Dr. Parke realized she had to choose between seeing patients and operating or running a company, and the footwear business won out. However, she still keeps up her license and attends annual surgical conferences to continue her medical education.

Lower Extremity Amputation Prevention (LEAP) emphasizes the importance of proactive measures in mitigating the risk of amputations among seniors with diabetes. 6 Strategies for Back Office Billing
The front desk staff is essential for checking in patients, collecting copays, and verifying insurance. But there’s more to the story, and out of sight doesn’t mean out of mind. Much of the heavy lifting for billing and collections is done in the back office, so it’s even more important to have a deep bench of talent, says Tammie Olson, manager and coding and compliance strategist at Management Resource Group.
6. Designate one person to follow-up on patient balances.
Your front office is making sure patients are aware of their balances. Someone in the back needs to be tasked with calling the patients and asking for payments. Many practices outsource this responsibility. It’s less important who makes the calls so long as follow-ups are conducted on an ongoing and regular basis.

Query: Fee for Credit Card Use
I'm considering adding a fee on all credit card charges. I'm paying about $300-400/month in credit card processing fees. With today's lower reimbursements and higher costs, these fees are becoming onerous. Many restaurants and retail stores are charging a fee for credit cards. What experiences have podiatrists had with charging a credit card fee?

RE: The Value of Podiatric Biomechanics
From: Jeffrey Trantalis, DPM
As podiatrists, we appreciate the skills involved in providing non-surgical options. For example, a large majority of my patients were Boeing workers who stood hours on their feet. A majority were treated with conservative care using biomechanics, an area which most podiatrists understand and appreciate. We are able to treat symptoms from the foot to the lower back. I worked for a back surgeon, and after a year he fired me because I was helping his patients that he wanted to do surgery on. This said a lot about the benefits of biomechanics. The sad and unfortunate consequence is these patients will not likely walk into your office.
While a student at ICPM, I personally benefited after being diagnosed with a pelvic rotation and a relative limb-length difference. This allowed me (with lift and orthotic therapy) to successfully be able to run 4-5 miles a day to improve my health. As podiatrists, we are more than just surgeons. We provide a lower extremity alternative. Another area is young women with femoral anteversion. Many women would otherwise have to undergo surgery, but with orthotics can lead a very athletic and productive life. The difficulty for podiatrists is that a lower back patient is less likely to walk into your office. That is the proverbial $64,000 question. I feel that as podiatrists we can offer much more to our patients.
Jeffrey Trantalis, DPM, Delray Beach, FL
