AL Podiatrist Arranges to Get Ramp Built for Veteran
A long string of personal misfortune and bad luck of the worst kind changed for the good on Friday for James Brooks. Local podiatrist Dr. Rick Kuhn and Chuck Richards and his 10-year-old son, Dean, of Auburn, worked together to build Brooks a free wheelchair ramp. Brooks' life hasn’t been very good in recent times. He’s recently had both his legs amputated below the knees due to complications of diabetes.
|
Dr. Richard Kuhn |
Cheryl Myers of the Christian Service Center talked to Dr. Kuhn and got the ball rolling. The father and son who drove up from Auburn to build the wheelchair ramp are with a church outreach program. “I work with Dr. Kuhn on a lot of projects,” Chuck Richards said. “We’re with the Church of the Highlands and are all about sharing the love of Jesus.”

NY Podiatrist's Building Heads for Landmark Status
If the famous Bay Ridge block known as “Doctor’s Row” is eventually declared a historic district by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission, then homeowners on the street will be looking back at March 26 as a significant day. The commission voted unanimously recently to “calendar” the proposal for historic district status for the block of Bay Ridge Parkway between Fourth and Fifth avenues.

Dr. Roy Olsen, a podiatrist who has an office on the block, said his building was constructed in 1899. He recently dug up a photocopy of an old advertisement for the block that boasted “new coal and gas ranges and a maid’s toilet,” among the selling points. The price tag for the house was $6,500. “We take a lot of pride in this block,” he said. “We put in new tree pits and plantings. We do what we can to take care of it.” Historic district status would make it easier to obtain grants for other beautification projects, Olsen said. “It’s going to open doorways,” he predicted.

PODIATRISTS AND HUMANITARIAN EFFORTS |
CA Podiatrist Offers Lifeline to Diabetic Patients in Nigeria
Six years ago, about 10 medical doctors of Nigerian and Black–American descent, based in the United States of America got together with a common purpose—to stop preventable and unnecessary limb amputations in Nigeria as a result of foot ulcers and other complications of diabetes. Convinced about the need to establish extensive foot care education within the framework of a multi-disciplinary foot care system in the country, these Nigerians in the Diaspora formed a Not-for-profit organization called: “The International Limb Salvage Foundation,” with primary focus on ensuring the essence of podiatry.
|
Dr. James Fullwood Jr |
An encounter with a couple of these Nigerian doctors: Kevin Adeleke, MD and James Fullwood Jr., DPM was an eye-opener. Dr. Adeleke who was born in Lagos, left Nigeria when he was only five months old, and is practicing emergency medicine in Queens, NY. Dr. Fullwood, on the other hand, specializes in foot and ankle reconstruction and diabetic limb salvage. He is an associate clinical professor of surgery and biomechanics at Western University of Health Sciences.

ON THE INTERNATIONAL LECTURE CIRCUIT |
CA Podiatrist Keynotes 10th Annual Symposium in Abu Dhabi
Dr. David G. Armstrong, Professor of Surgery and Director of the Southwestern Academic Limb Salvage Alliance (SALSA) at University of Southern California delivered the “State of The Art” Keynote address at the 10th Annual Abu Dhabi Wound Care Conference held in the United Arab Emirates this past weekend. The lecture, entitled “Off-loading the Diabetic Foot: 30 Years of Research in 30 Minutes” highlighted Armstrong and his group’s work over a generation in developing low tech and high-tech methods to protect and heal diabetic foot wounds.
|
Dr. David Armstrong |
Beginning with methods such as total contact casting, the lecture ended with the team’s work in developing next-generation “smart boots” and intelligent textiles. The symposium had 1,200 delegates from the Middle East and around the world and featured lecturers from four continents.

CODINGLINE CORNER |
Query: Retrocalcaneal Exostectomy with Achilles Re-attachment Bundled?
I performed a partial excision of the calcaneus along with excision of the calcified Achilles tendon. Which codes are to be used? Several insurance groups are saying only the partial excision of the calcaneus is billable and the Achilles tendon portion of the surgery is bundled into that payment. Any thoughts on this problem?
Donald I Kuzyk, DPM, Simi Valley, CA
Response: My experience with several insurance carriers would allow two codes for the scenario you have described:
CPT 28120 partial excision, bone, calcaneus
CPT 27630 excision of tendon sheath or capsule, leg and or ankle
It is reasonable to expect payment for two different pathologies in two different locations. I suggest getting a pathology report of tissues excised so that you have documentation that each procedure was performed.

QUERIES (CLINICAL) |
Query: Correcting an Excessively Long Toe
I have a patient with an exceptionally long 2nd toe that needs to be shortened. The toe is not contracted but juts out excessively and is painful. In the past, in correcting long toes, I have had a problem with cosmetic appearance due to excess skin once the toe is properly shortened. I have at times removed a large wedge of skin of the dorsal aspect of the toe, but sometimes this causes the toe to pull upwards.
I know this problem isn't unique, as I have a few patients that had long toes corrected by other podiatrists who now have what they call their "Shar Pei" toe because of the accordion-like wrinkles in the skin. Any ideas on how to correct an excessively long toe with a good cosmetic appearance afterwards?
