PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS |
FL Podiatrist Discusses How to Help Prevent Flat Feet
To help prevent flat feet, the key is to promote movement. Podiatrist Christopher Blanco, DPM emphasizes, "The more your child walks and explores, the stronger their body becomes, which aids in the development of their foot arch." Allowing your child to walk barefoot as much as possible is beneficial, as varying surfaces—such as tiles, grass, sand, and dirt—can stimulate their feet.
|
Dr. Christopher Blanco |
Additionally, selecting the right footwear is essential for your child’s foot health. Soft shoes that lack arch support are ideal, as they enable the feet to strengthen correctly. It’s advisable to avoid rigid sneakers during the initial walking phase. For outdoor activities, opt for leather shoes that fit snugly without being too tight, and consider replacing them every three months to accommodate growth.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
How to Write an Employee Handbook for Practice Staff
Here’s how to create a comprehensive, protective document, following Associated Press style guidelines.
6. Consult Professional Legal Counsel
An employee handbook is not a substitute for legal advice. Engage an attorney specializing in healthcare employment law to vet each policy. This is especially important if your practice operates in multiple states with varying regulations. A legal review can catch inconsistencies or outdated language that might otherwise leave your practice vulnerable to litigation.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) |
RE: LEAP Alliance and NCQA
From: Lawrence Rubin, DPM
A major obstacle to achieving diabetes amputation prevention goals is a general lack of insurance coverage for preventive foot screening examinations - this in spite of the fact that early detection and prompt treatment of diabetic peripheral neuropathy and peripheral artery disease saves limbs and lives. The goal is to provide insurance coverage for performing a thorough diabetes patient foot screening exam at least once a year. Payers would need provider compliance with a Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) measure - and no such measure exists.
HEDIS measures are performance measures developed by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) to measure, report, and compare the quality of care provided by health plans. With hopes of overcoming this obstacle, the LEAP Alliance is advancing an initiative to implement its proposed diabetes patient preventive foot examination measure. We have been successful in scheduling a meeting with NCQA. Its administrators have expressed interest, and hopefully this meeting will be productive.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM JURY VERDICT REPORTER) - PART 1A |
From: Daniel Chaskin, DPM
"The plaintiffs’ counsel cited Defendant’s deposition testimony, in which he admitted that he did not provide Plaintiff or his wife with any written instructions regarding post-operative movement for his legs, which counsel said was a departure from the standard of care." My opinion is that everyone with any type of swelling in the leg needs to have an MD or practitioner licensed to treat the leg refer the patient for a venous Doppler. The defense should have immediately said that the treatment of a pulmonary embolism is out of the scope of license for a podiatrist and therefore there was no standard of care related to the treatment of a pulmonary embolism by a podiatrist.
During the November 2 exam of the Plaintiff, the Defendant had asked him if he had any pain in his chest, any difficulty breathing and/or had pain in his legs. The defense cited the medical records which demonstrated that Defendant assessed Plaintiff’s left leg and ankle, and the Plaintiff did not have any complaints of pain. The findings indicated to Defendant that Plaintiff did not have a blood clot, the defense asserted.
Daniel Chaskin, DPM, Ridgewood, NY

YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP |
RE: Outrageous Delay of Surgery Excuse
I was about to perform an office procedure on a patient yesterday that would require follow-up. His girlfriend felt it might be a good idea to delay the procedure as he will be checking into an alcohol treatment center for the next 3 weeks. The patient stated ,"I'm not an alcoholic. I'm just a lousy driver when I drink and just happened to get stopped for another DWI."
