Scholl College Achieves 100% Match for 6th Straight Year
Fourth-year podiatric medical students celebrated Match Day on March 17. The annual rite of passage — in which students across the U.S. discover where they will spend the next few years in residency training — is the culmination of four years of intense study and clinical experiences. Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine reached a 100% match for the sixth consecutive year.
|
|
Dr. Stephanie Wu |
Scholl College Dean Stephanie Wu, DPM, MSc, said that soon-to-be podiatric physicians will enter residency training at one of the most challenging times in healthcare. “Our 100% match rate is evidence that these dedicated students are up for the challenge to improve the lives of the people and the populations they serve,” she said. “It speaks to their unwavering focus on their education and how they adapted seamlessly to all the pandemic-related adjustments to their learning, assessments, and course schedules, including sacrificing their spring break in February of 2021 for their board exam reviews.”

3 Digital Payment Trends that Healthcare Providers Need to Know
A streamlined digital experience is something consumers have come to expect in every area of their lives – yet traditionally healthcare has lagged in this area. Fortunately for providers, some changes loom on the horizon that could begin to reverse this trend. Following are three digital payment trends that have already begun and will continue to accelerate in the coming years.
1. The continued rise of contactless payments: In recent years, most merchants have migrated towards the acceptance of chip-enabled (also known as “EMV-enabled”) cards and away from the traditional swipe-enabled option

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1A | |
From: Walter Perez, DPM
The issue is access to the boards. The ABFAS does not allow a DPM to sit for exams unless he/she has met certain requirements. Any DPM should be allowed to pursue board certification and it is just the right thing to do for your fellow podiatrist. Yes, many won't pass or may not have the cases required and the limiting factor would be themselves, but for those who actually are able to achieve it, good for them; they earned it. More members would make the board stronger.
I am not in favor of certifying individuals who are not competent and I do not believe that is the intention of those advocating for one board. And I will not "call it a day" because there are many who are more than competent and there is no reason for them not to have the opportunity to sit for the boards. How to show competence? Pass the exam and show me the cases. The problem is that it is hard to practice nowadays, and to have insurance companies or hospitals requiring board certification from boards that don't allow everyone access is just wrong.
Walter Perez, DPM, Brooklyn, NY

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1B | |
From: Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD
Unfortunately, Dr. Roth is correct when he states that not every podiatrist can become board certified in foot and ankle surgery. I have refrained from making that statement, but I think it's true, and podiatry is not the only specialty to experience exclusion.
I was having a basal cell carcinoma removed a couple of weeks ago. During the procedure, I asked the dermatologist if he did much Mohs surgery. He told me he didn't do any. I asked him why and he said, "When I came to Ohio State, I hadn't done enough cases as a resident, and they didn't give me privileges to do them." He did not do a Mohs surgery fellowship. In 1991 there were only 37 Mohs surgery fellowships in the USA. Not every board certified dermatologist is viewed as qualified to perform Mohs surgery in an academic institution.
Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD, Columbus, OGH

From: Bret Ribotsky, DPM
With zero sponsorship, spending my own money, I attended the APMA board summit on Monday in DC. 100+ luminaries in our profession, came together with a significantly noticeable absence of the surgical board. I climbed the ladders within our profession to become certified in the separate boards that were available when I practiced; ABPO, ABPPM (merged into ABPOPPM, now ABPM), ABPS (now ABFAS). Each certification required significant requirements, training, testing, etc.
Over the last 10 years, I have advocated simplifying the incredible alphabet soup of initials. The concept of unification of our board certification process has begun. As ABFAS is the pre-eminent certification, I believe that their level and recognition needs to be preserved. So how do we get there? This was the purpose of the summit on Monday, but the failure of ABPS to formally participate was disappointing. A few of ABFAS’s board members were in attendance, and were quite cordial and productive in the discussions.
Moving forward... It’s crystal clear that representation in a weighted manner from all the principals to a new summit must occur. I recommend a number of well-trained clinicians who are no longer in practice, and have no dog in the fight, be used to protect and insulate the egos and agendas of each representative group. Our profession needs to move beyond respecting tradition, and needs to move into the future respecting innovation. What leverage is needed to start discussions?
Bret Ribotsky, DPM, Fort Lauderdale, FL

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1D | |
From: Randall Brower, DPM
I am glad this is finally coming to a head. There are two fundamental issues that are being conflated. Hospital admitting privileges vs. surgical privileges. I want to speak to surgical privileging. For the 20 years, I have been practicing in two states and over a dozen hospitals. It is a fact that MANY podiatrists use the IGNORANCE of the credentialing bodies of hospitals and surgery centers to gain surgical privileges they are not certified to perform.
I have seen podiatrists use ABMSP Board Certification (one of a few examples) to get privileges or attempt to get privileges to perform rearfoot and trauma surgery at hospitals. Credentialing boards at hospitals for decades have just assumed that podiatry is the same as other...
