PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS |
Bromhidrosis May Signal Significant Health Concern: NY Podiatrist
That unusual body odor you’ve noticed might be more than just a sign to shower or change deodorant brands – it could be your body trying to tell you something important about your health. The embarrassing problem of smelly feet might seem like a simple hygiene issue, but podiatrists warn that unusual foot odors could signal more significant health concerns. Lisa Freeman, DPM, who specializes in foot health at Metropolitan Podiatry Center, sees numerous patients whose foot odor issues mask underlying conditions.
“Beyond common fungal infections like athlete’s foot, persistent foot odor can indicate circulatory problems or extreme cases of hyperhidrosis that require medical intervention,” Freeman explains. She emphasizes that treating the surface smell without addressing the root cause can allow serious conditions to progress unnoticed.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY |
CA Podiatrist Describes “Solastalgia”—Grief Post LA Fires
"For over two decades, I have lived and practiced medicine in the Los Angeles area, yet I have never been as profoundly shaken as I am by the immense loss our community has endured," says Alfred L. Glover, DPM, a board-certified podiatrist in Foot and Ankle Surgery. Dr. Glover was a 2023 Climate Health Equity Fellow with the Medical Society Consortium on Climate and Health and a 2024-25 Policy Experience in Equity, Climate & Health Fellow.
|
Dr. Albert Glover |
"The Eaton Fire has left an indelible mark on Altadena, California—a historically Black enclave known for its resilience, generational wealth, and strong middle-class presence. However, the losses extend beyond homes and buildings. The term “solastalgia”—grief over environmental destruction—captures the deep emotional and cultural pain felt by residents. Families are mourning not just the structures that housed their memories but also the land, the community spaces, and the sense of security that Altadena once provided," says Dr. Glover.

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS AND DIABETES |
Early Detection of Diabetes Prevents Amputations: Ghana Podiatrist
Early detection of diabetes is said to help in preserving the limbs of patients from amputations. This, according to Amanda Mawudoku, a podiatrist, can be easily achieved with podiatry. Madam Mawudoku noted that "Most amputations are preventable by checking your feet daily, visiting your podiatrist, and wearing proper footwear." She explained that the connection between diabetes and the feet is important, as the disease can cause nerve damage and reduce circulation, ultimately leading to limb loss and other complications.
|
Amanda Mawudoku |
Podiatrists, she said can spot potential problems before they become serious and offer treatments to prevent complications, stressing that "Our routine foot inspections and examinations detect issues like ulcers, corns, calluses, and other warning signs to prevent amputation. We look for neuropathy, arthropathy, and vasculopathy.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
How to Write an Employee Handbook for Practice Staff
Here’s how to create a comprehensive, protective document, following Associated Press style guidelines.
5. Keep your handbook up-to-date.
Both healthcare regulations and employment laws change frequently. Commit to reviewing and updating the handbook annually or more often if major legislation is passed. If you do revise it, require employees to re-sign an acknowledgment. Regular reviews show that your practice is committed to compliance and helps demonstrate due diligence in the event of litigation.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (AI) |
RE: An AI Experience for You
From: Martin R. Taubman, DPM, MBA
I’m certain that many of you are familiar with AI and its many uses. However, to some there may still be some confusion of how AI works and just what it does. The following example is the result of my AI query to, “research and provide a complete report of the history of podiatry.” You will be amazed at the results. Not only was a comprehensive history, with references of our profession provided, but if you scroll to the end of the report, you will find a link to an audio “podcast” with simulated humans. On the one hand, this is a terrific tool; however, on the other hand, it is pretty scary. Could this be the future?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM JURY VERDICT REPORTER) |
From: Joseph S. Borreggine, DPM
Whether it is a trauma of lower extremity or an elective lower extremity surgery, the risk of a DVT is always present. The Caprini Risk Score for DVT. This attachment is regarding the risk of DVT in foot and ankle surgery. Therefore, DVT risk should always be evaluated in these cases, because missing it can become potentially fatal. This is nothing new for any podiatrist who performs surgery. This malpractice case and its reason certainly drives home the importance it is to fully assess a patient's Caprini Risk Score pre-operatively.
Also, any patient seen in the office with acute abnormal unilateral swelling and/or pain in the lower leg should be immediately assessed for acute DVT so that it can be ruled out. As podiatrists, we see many patients who come into the office with acute foot and lower leg pain who have been stagnant in their activities of daily living (ADL) or because of immobilization who may be at risk for DVT medically speaking. Therefore, it is imperative to rule out DVT in those situations as well.
DVT is a serious matter, and everything should be done to be certain that your patient does not have one. This is a true lesson learned and a teaching tool for those who are not aware of the possible morbidities and mortality associated with acute DVT. Every podiatrist in practice will experience a patient with an acute DVT some time in their practice and, therefore, everything possible should be done to adhere to the standard of care in diagnosing it and/or reducing the risk.
Joseph S. Borreggine, DPM, Fort Myers, FL
