MD Podiatrist Stresses Health Benefits of Wearing Shoes at Home
Every day, people with foot pain hobble into Priya Parthasarathy, DPM’s podiatry office, and she asks them the same three questions: “What do you do for work? Where do you work? And what do you put on your feet when you’re working?” More often than not, they work from home, barefoot.
|
|
Dr. Priya Parthasarathy |
Over the past few years, there has been a “significant increase” in people experiencing foot pain, says Dr. Parthasarathy, a podiatrist with Foot and Ankle Specialists of Mid-Atlantic in Silver Spring, MD. A rise in remote work is partly to blame, she believes. There is a solution to the aches, strains, and even stress fractures, though it’s not one patients like to hear: Start wearing shoes inside. “It makes such a big difference,” she says.

MA Podiatrist Discusses What to Look for in Running Shoes
“About 30% of the population has a tendency to roll in on their foot from the ankle, and another 10% spend more time on the outside of their foot,” says David Alper, DPM. For that reason, it’s best to determine your foot type before buying shoes. “A podiatrist can tell you what shoe you can tolerate best for the activity you’re seeking,” Dr. Alper says. Specialty running shoe stores often employ experts who can help with this, too.
|
|
Dr. David Alper |
And if you’re going to be running on hard pavement? Choose a shoe with enough cushion to provide some good shock absorption. “Every time a human being puts their foot down, two to three times their body weight goes through their foot,” says Dr. Alper. “So, if you weigh 150 pounds, that’s 500 pounds of pressure is going through your foot with every step. If you don’t bounce when you do that, that force is just going right up into your leg.”

UK Podiatrist Stored Hundreds of Medical Records at Home
A former Powys podiatrist has voluntarily been struck off after being accused of storing hundreds of medical records in his house. Bronterre Freelove, who was employed at Powys Teaching Health Board at the time of the accusation, has voluntarily been removed from the medical register after a tribunal investigated him for storing over 300 patient records in his home.
The Health and Care Professions Tribunal Service found the Mr Freelove’s practice was impaired as “between September 2015 until September 2016, whilst employed by Powys Teaching Health Board, he did not ensure that patient records were stored in a secure location” and “stored approximately 341 patient records at his home address, when it was inappropriate to do so.”

Nearly Half of Health Systems are Considering Dropping Medicare Advantage Plans
"Onerous" authorization requirements and high denial rates have health systems considering whether to drop Medicare Advantage plans, according to a report from the Healthcare Financial Management Association and Eliciting Insights. "HFMA Health System CFO Pain Points Study 2024" is based on a survey of 135 health system CFOs conducted in January.
According to the report, 16% of health systems are planning to stop accepting one or more Medicare Advantage plans in the next two years. Another 45% said they are considering the same but have not made a final decision.

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
6 Strategies for Back Office Billing
The front desk staff is essential for checking in patients, collecting copays, and verifying insurance. But there’s more to the story, and out of sight doesn’t mean out of mind. Much of the heavy lifting for billing and collections is done in the back office, so it’s even more important to have a deep bench of talent, says Tammie Olson, manager and coding and compliance strategist at Management Resource Group.
4. Follow up on accounts receivable daily.
Run insurance aging reports and review anything more than 60 days old. You may have to call the payer in some cases, but most claims pay within 21 to 30 days of submission. If this is not the case, you need to investigate what’s going on.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS) | |
From: Steven Finer, DPM
This week’s poll covers disability insurance. As to new practitioners, when you buy this product make sure you understand the meaning of disability. For example, some policies may state that should you have a life-threatening situation, you could still teach and therefore be denied coverage. The policy should state that upon the fact of not being well with a serious medical condition, you will collect. Years ago, I bought the wrong policy, and a few years later turned that in and bought one with the proper definition.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (APMA HOD) - PART 1A | |
From: Jeffrey Trantalis, DPM
I would like to comment on podiatry as a MD subspecialty. In the 1980s, while practicing in the Seattle area, a new subspecialty in orthopedics was being developed for MDs: The orthopedic foot and ankle surgeons. There was a highly trained and world respected orthopedic surgeon named Sigvard Hansen, Jr., MD. He was chief at Harborview Medical Center. He saw, appreciated, and acknowledged the skills podiatrists possessed to the chagrin of his colleagues. The goals of this new subspecialty was to put podiatrists out of business.
The irony to all of this is they were taught their surgical skills to operate on the foot and ankle by podiatrists. Gary Dockery, DPM was one of these mentors who provided great knowledge and skills to this new group. What I am saying is that podiatrists belong in this endeavor to be called MDs, and thus simplify the professions.
Jeffrey Trantalis, DPM, Delray Beach, FL

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (APMA HOD) - PART 1B | |
From: Joe Agostinelli, DPM
I write this reply in support of my colleagues, Drs. Amol Saxena and Bret Ribotsky concerning their comments on the recent APMA HOD resolution concerning support for “one certifying board". Drs. Spinner and Zlotoff also have penned cogent and, in my opinion, correct observations on this subject.
My previous experiences of 23 years active duty USAF and 13 years private practice (always as part of a large orthopedic surgery group practice) have colored my take on this situation. Rather than trying to solve a problem with one certifying board, the profession needs to do something more radical - that is having all the podiatric medical colleges, especially those associated with MD and DO schools, discontinue the DPM degree and rather have...
Editor's note: Dr. Agostinelli's extended-length letter can be read here.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) | |
Dr. Allan Spencer was a great professor but also a wonderful gentleman. It’s no coincidence that so many of the posted remembrances mention the word "gentleman". It’s one of the words that first entered my mind after learning of his passing. Dr. Spencer had a kind and special way of sharing his knowledge. He always appeared calm and collected and was always patient with his students. I remember him as being respectful of the students and that he easily gained the respect and confidence of his students in return.
I’m sorry for the loss to the Spencer family. Dr. Scott Spencer carries on his Dad’s passion and it’s a great benefit to KSUCPM that he carries the baton to teach future generations of DPMs. I feel privileged to have had Dr. Allan as one of my professors and will always remember him fondly.
Bruce G. Blank, DPM, Stewartsville, OH
