Gout Patients Need to Find Shoes That Won't Aggravate Healing Joints: IL Podiatrist
Gout attacks, which most commonly affect the joint of your big toe, are sudden, excruciating, and can wreak havoc on your everyday routine. The pain and swelling in your foot can be severe — so severe, in fact, that wearing shoes may not even be possible at some points: “At the height of the pain and swelling, some patients can't even tolerate wearing socks, let alone shoes,” says podiatrist Stephanie Wu, DPM, dean of the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science.

To make it even worse, gout tends to come back. According to Dr. Wu, studies have found that 60% of patients who suffer a gout attack will experience a recurrent flare within a year. While avoiding footwear during the worst of an acute attack may be the best policy, it's a good idea to find shoes that won’t aggravate your healing joints after it subsides.

Rocker-Bottom Running Shoes Not Ideal for Weight Lifting: NY Podiatrist
Running in non-supportive shoes can contribute to injuries like stress fractures, Robert Conenello, DPM says. On the flip side, the cushy, rocker-bottom shoe that makes your miles feel oh-so-smooth can leave you wobbly and unstable in the weight room. Running shoes with narrow toe boxes that limit the range of motion in your toes can make movements like squats less safe and effective, because you can’t engage your big toe to push off the floor, Dr. Conenello says. And without lateral support, you might be more prone to roll an ankle, especially when you’re doing power or plyometric moves (think skater lunges or box jumps).

This doesn’t matter as much if your strength workout consists primarily of weightlifting machines or you’re doing upper-body movements that are seated or lying down (think bench press), Dr. Conenello says. But free-weight exercises like squats, deadlifts, bent-over rows, and standing overhead presses require more stability and balance. If you’re wobbly or unsteady during these moves—particularly if you’re moving a lot of weight—you probably won’t be able to go as heavy, you’re at risk of falling, and you also might put undue stress on other parts of your body, such as your back or knees, to stabilize you, he says.

Podiatrist's Breach of Standard of Care Proved Fatal (PA)
Case Summary: On Nov. 11, 2016, plaintiff’s decedent Plaintiff, 41, a general contractor, died due to complications related to a pulmonary embolism and cardiopulmonary arrest at a hospital in Allentown. His estate alleged that his death was the result of substandard care by Defendant podiatrist. Plaintiff’s wife, on behalf of her husband’s estate, sued Defendant and his practice. The estate alleged that Defendant, failed in his standard of care toward Plaintiff and further alleged that his failure constituted medical malpractice.
On Oct. 28, 2016, Defendant surgically repaired Plaintiff’s left Achilles tendon tear. By November 2, Plaintiff had difficulty using his crutches due to shortness of breath. Defendant instructed plaintiff to...

Results: Skin disorders were more frequent in men (70.2%) compared to women (29.8%). Regarding age, 70% of individuals aged 19 to 30 years presented dermatoses, compared to 36% in the 12 to 18-year-old group. Exercise intensity also had an impact: 53.8% of athletes engaging in moderate activity exhibited keratoses, compared to 30.8% of those practicing intense activity. Additionally, athletes in terrestrial sports showed an average of 5.2 podiatric disorders, significantly higher than the 3.2 average in aquatic sports. Specifically, terrestrial athletes have a higher prevalence of pinch callus (84.6%) and hyperkeratosis on metatarsal heads (85.7%), while aquatic athletes have more onychomycosis (91.7%) and less hyperkeratosis. A higher prevalence of rotated toes (61.4%) and subungual hematoma (90.9%) was also observed in terrestrial athletes.
Conclusions: The prevalence of podiatric disorders is significantly related to gender, age, and the type of physical activity. Men and young adults are more prone to dermatoses, while athletes engaging in moderate intensity activity and those athletes in terrestrial sport face a higher risk of podiatric issues. These findings highlight the need for prevention and treatment strategies in relation to the specific characteristics of each group.
