Pay Attention to Foot Problems: MI Podiatrist
The foot’s complexity means there’s a lot that can go wrong. “Foot problems can range from annoying to devastating,” says Crystal M. Holmes, DPM, who heads the podiatry program at Michigan Medicine. “You can have skin problems like athlete’s foot, which is caused by fungus. Or you can have warts, which is a viral infection. These generally are not serious. But certain other skin infections can wreak havoc if left untreated.”

“I suggest to my patients that when you go to your doctor, and you take your clothes off for the exam, make sure you take off your shoes and your socks too. Have the doctor take a look at your feet,” Dr. Holmes says. “it’s important to catch foot problems sooner than later.”

RE: Can DPMs Fill the Upcoming MD Retirement Void?

Health Finance reports that A record number of physicians are nearing retirement age. According to a 2022 report published by the Association of American Medical Colleges, nearly half (46.7%) of practicing physicians were already over the age of 55 in 2021. This means more than two of every five active physicians will reach age 65 within the next 10 years. Could this be an opportunity for future DPMs to fill the void?

I wholeheartedly agree with Walter Perez, DPM regarding his comment today about board certification. It should not matter how long after residency a DPM can sit for a board exam. The CPME needs to get rid of this requirement. I would like to sit for ABPM but since I am over 8 years out of residency, I cannot. I will be sitting for the ABMSP exam this April but would rather be certified by ABPM.

In the late 1980s, I became board eligible. However, I never had quite enough cases to sit for certification. I was very fortunate to be grandfathered into my area hospitals to enable me to practice what I was trained to do. When I had the appropriate number of cases, I was told by (at that time) ABPS, that I could no longer sit for the certification examination, which never made sense to me.
Now we have a battle between ABFAS (the old ABPS) and ABPM, which has divided our profession and made us a laughing stock in the medical world. No one wins in litigation. What is needed is negotiation, but both sides have to be willing to come to the table and negotiate in good faith. We need to have one board that can be...

I agree that having a DPM degree does NOT mean that you essentially can become board certified in surgery. Let’s face it... for various reasons, the bottom portion of the graduating podiatric medicine residents probably just do not meet the criteria. While an equal opportunity should be afforded to all to be boarded in surgery, the reality is that a certain percent of recent grads are not going to pass the exams or fulfill criteria for one reason or another. Developing a certification by an alternate board to basically allow any DPM to be “certified” in surgery is plain old wrong. While the easy way is always popular, that does not make it the correct way.
ABFAS must stand strong and reject any compromises as there really are none. The alternative board is attempting to grab money and power with its alternative surgical certification. For those who can NOT meet the requirements to become certified in surgery, call it a day. This current situation is no different mentality-wise to those who believe that everyone should receive a trophy (board certification in surgery) for participation, i.e. completing a residency in podiatric surgery.
