PODIATRISTS AND SOCIAL MEDIA
CA Podiatrist Raises Alarm Bells For Disney Guests

TikTok and other social media networks help bring the magic of Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort to those stuck at home, but they’re also the source of many disturbing Disney Parks “trends.” Last year, we followed a concerning trend that saw young Guests sticking their feet in Disney Parks rides with water on attractions like “It’s a Small World” and Splash Mountain. While the incidents died down after a few weeks, the viral videos still see so much traction that Dana Brems, DPM, a podiatrist recently spoke out against the trend on TikTok.

Dr. Dana Brems (Photo: Inside the Magic)

“Don’t do this,” Doctor Brems said simply after sharing one of the many viral videos. Not only is ride water not clean enough for human consumption or touching, but many water rides also have electrical elements and metal tracks just below the surface. Reaching into an off-limits area on any Theme Park attraction is incredibly dangerous.

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR
CA Podiatrist Recommends Best Shoes for Women in Their 30s

According to board-certified podiatrist Najwa Javed, DPM, women in their 30s "lose a lot of their biomechanical support. One of the best investments they need to do is to buy an everyday shoe that they can wear on quick errands, that is also chic and easy to slip on and slip off," she says. Dr. Javed also recommends an athletic shoe that focuses on their foot type. Are your feet supinating? Do you have collapsing arches post-pregnancy? Do you have flat feet or pronation? Depending on where you are in life, these may be some questions to ask yourself before committing to a shoe purchase.

Dr. Najwa Javed

"If they are going to have a staple shoe in their closet, I highly recommend that every woman has at least one pair of wedges. Wedges are fantastic because they go between two to three inches high, but the reason why they're good is that wedges have better distribution in the surface area," she suggests. This type of shoe helps to lift the forefoot while having the heel elevated.

HEALTHCARE NEWS
Candida Auris Spreading At “Alarming Rate” In Health Facilities, CDC Says

The Washington Post reports “a deadly and highly-drug resistant fungus is spreading at ‘an alarming rate’ in long-term care hospitals and other health facilities caring for very sick people, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Monday.” Fungal infections tied to “the yeast strain known as Candida auris tripled nationally from 476 in 2019 to 1,471 in 2021, according to CDC data.”

In the same time period, “cases where a person carries the fungus but is not infected nearly quadrupled from 1,077 to 4,040.” Preliminary data suggest “the numbers have continued to rise.” The findings were published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Key Marketing Tactics to Boost Patient Aquisition and Retention in 2023

3. Control your reviews - Reviews don’t just happen — and when they do, they probably aren’t the ones you want. Take control of the narrative by asking your patients to leave reviews immediately after a visit. Send a form automatically via email or text to encourage a higher response. Guide where patients should leave reviews since consumers view some review sites as more credible than others. According to research by Tebra, Google is the top site patients look at for practice reviews, followed by the practice’s website and WebMD, with only 16 percent of patients looking at Facebook reviews.

Unfortunately, bad reviews do sometimes happen. In case of a negative review, take action quickly. Leave a response on the site or note that you’ll be following up privately (and if you choose to respond in this way, do actually follow up). People reading reviews are more likely to offer grace if they see that you are aware of and addressing patient feedback.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON- CLINICAL) - PART 1A
From: Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD

"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." George Santayana wrote the above in 1905. Podiatry is approaching the board certification intersection controversy once again and it may serve the profession well to review the history of ABPS.

ABPS was founded in 1978 when I was a first year resident. The orthopedic surgeons in Philadelphia immediately told us we had a weak board and becoming board certified in podiatric surgery was about as difficult as getting a library card. When I finished my second year, I was considered board eligible by the ABPS. One very prominent podiatrist told me the best way to get hospital privileges was to...

Editor's note: Dr. Tomczak's extended-length letter can be read here.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1B
From: Walter Perez, DPM

Dr. Tomczak, your comment is well taken and yes, I do believe that our certifying board needs to be strong to have credibility in the medical world and with insurance companies. However, I have a problem with your final comment: "We do not want to be accused again of having weak boards and we don't want to return to the days of lawsuits and intra-professional animosity." I do not believe that issue is how strong or weak our boards are and, of course, we need strong boards, but the real issue is accessibility. Many podiatrists cannot sit for the boards because they do not have certain credentials.

I believe that the mere fact of having a DPM degree is enough to qualify for any of the boards and certainly, a single certifying board and subspecialties under it makes perfect sense to me. And we certainly do not want lawsuits or animosity and this is the reason why we need to come together and come up with sound solutions. The bottom line is, every podiatrist should have a path to board certification. It’s a win-win for our profession and our patients.

Walter Perez, DPM, Brooklyn, NY

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2
From: Stephen Musser, DPM

I agree with name withheld. It’s time to have a unified board!

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS)
From: Burton J. Katzen, DPM

I have a separate cell phone (not my private one) that I give to patients, especially post-op patients or patients that I feel need to get in touch with me in a timely manner (ex. diabetic ulcer patients). I will put their name, date of surgery, and type of procedure in my contacts so I know exactly who is calling and when and what procedure was done. I use a pay-as-you-go phone, and the total yearly cost is less than $75.00. I always contact my patients the 1st post-op day, and they know it is me calling.

The patients love not having to go through an answering service and getting me directly, and the cost compared to an answering service is minimal. It's almost like having a concierge doctor on call and I can't begin to tell you how many referrals I have gotten because of that practice. When the phone is off, (usually after the 2nd post-op day) I have it call forwarded to my private phone, but they will leave a message, so I still know who is calling.
