RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1A |
From: Lisa Wyatt, Bret M. Ribotsky, DPM
It is with deep sadness that I inform you of the passing of my Dad, Oliver S. Foster, DPM. He passed on Thursday, March 17th. A memorial service is scheduled for April 2, 2016 at 10a.m., Hollywood Forever, 6000 Santa Monica Blvd., Los Angeles, CA.
Lisa Wyatt
Our profession lost a giant with the passing of Oliver Foster, DPM. Ollie’s story is incredible and I encourage everyone to listen to his interview from Meet the Masters from January 8, 2013. Ollie was a personal bartender to the Hollywood famous “A” List including Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jr. Ollie told us all how Frank Sinatra would call him “young blood” as he never tired. When ACFAOM hosted a lifetime tribute/roast of Barry Block for their annual meeting a few years ago, Ollie participated in a classic video cameo.
Ollie was a super nice guy, always willing to help everyone, and the APMAPAC was a large benefactor of this passion. All of us who had the opportunity to know Ollie have had our lives enhanced by him. I’ll miss you, Ollie, as you were truly one of a kind.
Bret M. Ribotsky, DPM

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1B |
From: Edward R. Nieuwenhuis, Sr., DPM, Joel A. Feder, DPM
Podiatry has lost a giant, and I have lost a treasured friend and colleague. Always a positive influence for both young and old, he will be missed both for his enthusiasm for the profession and his vision for its future. In these days when negativism seems to have become a byword, let us follow Ollie's example of projecting a positive image of our beloved profession.
Edward R. Nieuwenhuis, Sr., DPM
Another great redwood of our profession has fallen. Working with him over the years was an honor and a joy. There will never be another Ollie.
Joel A. Feder, DPM

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1C |
From: David Armstrong, DPM, Thomas Neuman, DPM
The first of so many memories that rushed to mind when hearing of Ollie's passing was when he took me and my little brother, Darrin, for an early morning jog through Xi'an in the early 1980s. I remember trying to keep up and trying not to embarrass myself or my family by showing my comparative lack of stamina or highlighting my diminutive size. I remember trying so hard to run that I ran straight into his backside when he stopped at a corner. He turned around. My brother caught up. A crowd of interested locals gathered (seeing three Americans jogging pre-dawn in China was rather odd back then). Everyone was laughing.
And so it is today. We've all tried to keep up with Ollie. It has been his singular combination of sense, smarts, style, stamina and strength that have drawn us to him. In following him, we as a specialty have ended up in a far better place. As he now finally rests, we hope and wish the same for him. RIP, Uncle Ollie. You were the best. You made us all better.
David Armstrong, DPM
Ollie was the best of us, in all ways.
Thomas Neuman, DPM, Northridge, CA

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1D |
From: Steven J Berlin, DPM, Ralph Graham
Podiatry will certainly miss Dr. Ollie Foster. I classify him as a podiatric legend in his own time. He had a heart of gold and a personality to go with it. He was a staunch supporter of the California Podiatric Medical Association and the APMA. The Kaplan-Clarke-Foster fundraising golf tournament added his name to the program for all the fundraising he contributed to making this a successful opportunity for political action activity. This has done so much for the advancement of podiatric medicine on all fronts. I had the pleasure of working with Ollie on many occasions, and he was always there with his support. He was a good friend whom I will never forget. I will miss him dearly and so will podiatric medicine.
Steven J Berlin, DPM
I was greatly saddened to read the news of the passing of Ollie Foster. I met Ollie for the first time when I was in the USA in 1980 visiting many leading podiatrists. He impressed me with his tireless efforts and his dedication to the development of our International profession. I talked with him on many other occasions when at the APMA House of Delegates and conferences, and his enthusiasm never waned. We have all lost a friend and a wonderful colleague.
Ralph Graham, Witham, Essex

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1A |
From: Jeff Kittay, DPM
What heresy Dr. Kass! Have a Congressperson paid for the actual quality of work he/she performs? Why, they'd OWE money at the end of each week. And make them live within the narrow parameters they freely and routinely define for others while dining off the fatted calf themselves? Absurd! You must be one of those socialists we've been reading about in the news lately, promoting the ridiculous notion of Medicare for all. What utter nonsense.
Jeff Kittay, DPM (retired), San Isidro, Costa Rica

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1B |
From: Farshid Nejad, DPM
I agree with Dr. Kass. When will all of the cutting stop? We continue to have a 2% sequestration, penalties for PQRS, MU, pre-payment audits for DM shoes, and now x-rays. The better question is when will medicine as a whole stand up to the bullies making the rules. I am not speaking of just podiatry, but all physicians need to unite and have one voice. We are training surgeons in a three-year program to come out and make peanuts for what they have dedicated most of their lives to. I am willing to dedicate my time and money to begin a movement, not rhetoric to unite all specialty associations. Maybe I'm naïve, maybe I'm head strong, but personally I am tired of laying down.
I challenge our APMA leadership to respond to this post from an APMA-paying member. Tell me why we are just accepting what is being handed down as law. Why can’t all of medicine publicize to the public what is going on and what our positions are? Our voice to Congress can be amplified. Money should stop going to lobbyists and should be used as ad dollars educating the public. California docs just recently united against the lawyers and won against raising malpractice caps. This should be a catalyst for change. WE CAN DO IT TOGETHER!
Farshid Nejad, DPM, Beverly Hills, CA
