The American Podiatric Medical Writers Association (APMWA) has announced its 39th Annual Student Writing Competition.

All papers MUST be non-technical in nature and original. (NOT AI generated) Appropriate subjects include practice management, ethics, law, education, healthcare, or any topic that would be suitable for a lay publication. Entries should be submitted as a Word (.docx) file.

There is no word limitation. Papers will be graded for content, style, grammar, neatness, and overall impact.

First prize one thousand dollars ($1,000), Second prize seven hundred and fifty dollars ($750) Third prize five hundred dollars ($500) sponsored by an APMA Educational Foundation endowment from Dr. and Mrs. Steven Berlin, and recognition in the APMA NEWS and the APMWA Newsletter. Honorable Mention Certificates may also be awarded.

RE: PECOS Enrollment Fiasco

PECOS 2.0 a long-awaited update to what has become the enrollment fiasco, which has created great angst for all providers has finally been killed after many years of delays at a cost of over $200M. On March 12, CMS announced the following: Contractors working to modernize a provider enrollment system have been shown the door.
Instead, CMS will work with the highly influential advisory group Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to complete a system overhaul that will be far less costly and time-consuming, the agency said. “Two contractors spent nine years and $200M working on a modern provider enrollment system at CMS,” the agency said in an X post. “After 14 missed deadlines, zero usable output was produced. CMS has now cancelled these two contracts (saving $17.8M annually), has hired multiple software engineers, and working with DOGE, are accelerating this project.”
Coming after yesterday's announcement by the DOJ that an accrediting body had a facility accreditor who took bribes and set up shill corporations which he owned and inspected leading to millions of dollars in fraudulent claims, it's time CMS started inspecting and auditing itself and its employees. This is further proof that the wolf watching the hen house is not the healthcare providers but the carriers and their employees.

I learned the Yiddish word Mensch in the Jewish hospital where I completed my PSR 24+. The word is used to signify an honorable and diligent person who works for the good of the group. You don't call yourself a Mensch, others call you one. This is certainly the case with Dr. Barry Block and it is quite fitting that he received the Citation for Distinguished Service last weekend. He has been constantly of service to the profession keeping us informed on a daily basis. The profession would be much better if there were more podiatrists like Barry.

Yesterday, I received the March 2025 issue of Podiatry Management. A most important statistic in PM's Annual Survey Report showed the 1997 gross income as $268,000. Fast forward... it was the same for 2023. Adjustments for inflation should make it $453,000 dollars. A new car then was $19,000, a house $143,000. What do you pay for office rent in 2025, supplies, and salaries? In 1997, my office rent was $800. My secretary was paid $10 an hour. If you make $100 a week and bread is 25 cents, then all is well.
