The Bako Medical Education Foundation Announces Grant to WesternU

Western University of Health Sciences College of Podiatric Medicine (CPM) received a gift of $100,000 from the Bako Medical Education Foundation (BMEF) to increase an existing endowment. A previous gift of $20,000 funds a $1,000 annual scholarship and the new gift will raise that number substantially. The latest multi-year grant is subject to certain conditions.

Dr. V. Kathleen Satterfield

“We appreciate this remarkable support from Bako,” said CPM Associate Dean V. Kathleen Satterfield, DPM. “Student loan debt is a significant challenge to podiatric medical students and this money will directly benefit many of them, helping them to pursue their dreams of becoming podiatric physicians and surgeons.”

Scouts to Explore Careers in Podiatric Medicine at 24th World Jamboree

Following up on the initiative started by Bruce Blank, DPM to introduce the Boy Scouts of America to podiatry, The American Association of Colleges of Podiatric Medicine (AACPM)  has announced its support for a career exploration exhibit tent at the 24th World Scout Jamboree at the Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia from July 22 to August 2nd, 2019.

Dr. Bruce Blank

According to recent registration numbers, over 30,000 Scouts will attend from 150 countries across six continents. Youth participants will range from 14-17 years of age. The World Jamboree is co-ed. The exhibit tent seeks to engage young students, showcase the profession in a “hands-on” manner, and to demonstrate the state-of-the-art technology currently in use by podiatric medical professionals in their day-to-day practice.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL-LEGAL) - Part 1A
From: Steven Finer, DPM

Solution to DEA number. A limited number excluding schedule 2 drugs would solve it. The DEA can then charge a reasonable fee. Of course, we would be trusting a government agency to do something simplistic.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL-LEGAL) - PART 1B
From: Christopher Orlando, DPM

This is a conversation that should not be happening. The DEA license should be retained until the doctor is fully retired and out of practice. The cost in New York is $731.00 for 3 years (243.67 per year). This is nominal. The cost of membership in ABPM, ABPS, etc. is three times the cost. Why cheap out on a small number? Historically, we as a profession worked very hard to earn the right to have the DEA license. This was a long hard battle that was finally won in 1971. Prior to that, we could not write any prescriptions at all. Our profession has been climbing a steep hill (and gaining) for the past 100 years. Let's not give it back.

While we are on the subject of prescriptions, our DEA license allows for schedule 2, 2N, 3, 3N, 4, 5 medications. Therefore, if doctors are allowed by their DEA license to prescribe medical marijuana, each doctor would then make an individual decision as to whether to prescribe it or not. I would not want that decision taken away from me by those who would elect to decline to prescribe it.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS PODIATRISTS IN THE MEDIA)
From: Joel Lang, DPM

There is a new podiatry program on A&E (Arts & Entertainment) showing really gross podiatry procedures - mostly really gross ingrown nails with lip hypertrophy and granulomatous enlargement. It is repetitious dealing mostly with infected ingrown nails and an occasional plantar wart and nail fungus/hypertrophy. In my opinion, it is totally unwatchable by a lay viewer. Further, it does not demonstrate the vast array of other conditions and procedures and services provided by podiatrists. Perhaps it comes from Canada and reflects a more constricted scope of practice than that in the U.S. .

RE: Outrageous Shoe of the Day

Frederick Hornof was inspired by the red heel from the time of Louis XIV. The Sun King was wearing a shoe with a red heel, a privilege of the elite.

These shoes say "stop" and look at me (Photo: Martin Bing)

At that time, a red heel was a symbol of wealth, exclusivity, and power.
