OBITUARIES |
Oliver S Foster, DPM - Podiatric Giant
Podiatry has lost one of its greatest statesman of all time. Dr. Oliver "Ollie" Foster was a well known and beloved fixture at the APMA House of Delegates for over a half century. He was a renowned and passionate orator and philanthropist who raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for APMAPAC, including the Kaplan-Clarke-Foster Invitational Golf Tournament.
|
Dr. Oliver Foster |
Ollie was the recipient of numerous honors including A Lifetime Achievement Award from the California Podiatric Medical Association and Podiatry Management Magazine. He was inducted into the PM Podiatry Hall of Fame in 2012. His legacy will endure through the countless podiatrists that he inspired and motivated.

NYCPM Partners With Seeding Labs To Benefit Global Scientific Community
The New York College of Podiatric Medicine (NYCPM) has donated used lab equipment to the non-profit organization Seeding Labs, whose mission is to “equip all scientists with the tools, training, and connections they need to be on the cutting edge of global discovery.” The organization provides scientists and educators at universities in the developing world with donated lab equipment—because talent is everywhere, but resources are not. Thirty-four universities in 24 countries have received equipment from Seeding Labs to advance the training of students and accelerate research in areas like HIV/AIDS, malaria, TB, agriculture, and the environment.

(L-R) Mustafa Ahmed (Class of 2018), Calvin Davis (Class of 2018), HyunJi Boo (Class of 2019), Jason Kaplan (Class of 2019), and Dr. Peter Barbosa. |
Peter Barbosa, PhD, Professor of Pre-Clinical Sciences at NYCPM, praises the dedication and effort of his students stating, “Our students not only care about their personal growth and education, but also the needs and concerns of the global scientific community, essential to the development of well-versed physicians.” His students organized a large donation of used but functional biochemical research equipment and supplies to be distributed by Seeding Labs.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) |
RE: The Passing of Oliver Foster, DPM
I'm heartbroken to learn of the loss of my friend Ollie Foster, DPM. He was a tireless advocate of podiatry and the APMA Political Action Committee.
He was a supporter of mine when I ran for Congress. When I was first introduced to the California Democratic Delegation in 2011 and I told a roomful of Members of Congress that I was a podiatrist, nearly in unison, they said, "Do you know Ollie Foster?"
Goodbye Ollie :(
Lee C. Rogers, DPM, Los Angeles, CA
Deep prayers and may our days touch more lives in honor and appreciation of Ollie.
Hal Ornstein, DPM, Howell, NJ

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) |
RE: Pay for Performance for Politicians
From: Jeffrey Kass, DPM
There is much being written about "pay for performance." I was wondering when these astute lawmakers consider these alternative payment schemes if any consideration is made for establishing a similar payment system for themselves. The way I figure, since we are still in sequestration and losing money every day, why are lawmakers receiving salaries that never go down in value? Why do people in Congress not have healthcare benefits equal to those of Obamacare?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CODINGLINE CORNER) -PART 1A |
From: Joseph Borreggine, DPM
Regarding what Dr. Hultman stated in a recent Codingline interview, I must disagree because podiatry does not have the same credible education according to our medical colleagues. The fact is that the curriculums at the podiatry colleges change every couple of years, and hence, there is no standardization in education at all.
The actual way to an MD degree is in a conjoint venture with a medical school. Most, if not all, physicians assistants, nurse practitioners, and osteopaths are trained in medical teaching hospitals. If that were the case with podiatry, that would solve part of the problem , but alas...
Editor's note: Dr. Borreggine's extended-length letter can be read here.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (SUCCESS TIPS FROM THE MASTERS) - PART 1B |
From: Simon Young, DPM
Truly sad to say, I am in full agreement with Dr. Markinson. The residents must realize the difference in their post-graduate education from allopathic education. I can only speak from my experiences, but there is a vast difference. Yes, they do rotations in various disciplines, but do they learn? Many are capable, but are they interested enough? Is there a desire? Yes, training by podiatrists is important, but it should not be the main source of their education. Surgery should be a focus, but not the priority.
My positions on podiatric education still haven't changed from previous posts. Sad to say, Markinson's crystal ball might very well be accurate. Change must come from within. The future residents must work much harder, and utilize their training years to indoctrinate the medical residents who will be instrumental in patient referrals. The future path will be difficult for many, me included.
Simon Young, DPM, NY, NY

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) - PART 1A |
From: Steven D Epstein, DPM
Some years ago, I stopped taking my own x-rays, began referring the patients out to local radiology offices, and sold my x-ray machine when reimbursements were cut. Many plans stopped paying DPMs for x-rays, and the regulations for owning and taking one's own x-rays became too burdensome. I had also stopped doing osseus surgery so this was not too much of an inconvenience.
Whether CR or DR, I think the image quality is poor compared to old fashioned plain films. I miss the detail you can see on a good plain film hanging on a view box. Often I can't open the disk provided by the radiology facility, because their proprietary software program has yet to update to be compatible with the latest Windows updates.
Steven D Epstein, DPM, Lebanon, PA

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) - PART 1B |
From: James W. Clark, DPM
The bill requiring digital x-rays should be titled, "The Digital X-Ray Manufacturers Welfare Act of 2016." Digital films aren't any better quality than hand processed versions, and shortening the time between taking the films and being able to read them does nothing to improve resultant treatment of the patient. I have more suspicions about how this came about, but if I voice those opinions then PM News might not print my comments.
