Shower Shoes at Gym Can Prevent Foot Infections: NC Podiatrist
Most people will tell you that you're probably safe if you don't wear shower shoes at the gym, but it's not a chance you should be willing to take. Warm, moist environments like your gym's shower stalls are the places where fungi thrive, and if your feet are not protected by shower shoes, it's easy to pick one up. Going into shower stalls unprotected can lead to athlete's foot or even onychomycosis, an infection that turns toenails hard and yellow, says Dr. Jane Andersen, a podiatrist and a spokesperson for the American Podiatric Medical Association.
|
Dr. Jane Andersen |
Both infections can require over-the-counter and prescription antifungal treatments, and if you pick up onychomycosis at the gym, it can be a lengthy process that takes months to fully treat.

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL) |
Query: Pre-tape Skin Adhesive
We often apply strappings and show patients how to do this at home. We give them a list of supplies to get, but we can't find a good pre-tape skin adhesive they can buy. Does anyone have any suggestions?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL) |
From: Eric Bornstein, DMD
Nomir Medical Technologies' newly FDA-approved for the treatment of onychomycosis has indeed conducted controlled studies with its Noveon photo-biological laser system on onychomycosis.
First JAPMA article: (J Am Podiatr Med Assoc 99(4): 348-352, 2009)
Temperatures observed during a human pilot study of onychomycosis with the Noveon laser never reached higher than...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) |
From: Robert Kornfeld, DPM
I take great exception to Dr. Young's condemnation of Dr. Baum's surgical technique. We do not get paid by the hour. We get paid by the procedure. After doing hammertoe surgery for over 30 years, I can see no reason for it to take much more than ten minutes per toe. I have completed many in probably five minutes. Let me remind Dr. Young that the fee includes after care. It is opinions like this that belittle what we do and are the biggest poison affecting our specialty.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) - PART 1A |
From: Joseph Borreggine, DPM
I have a few words for this egregious abuse of capitalism. This is appalling. I understand that we cannot restrict someone's trade or tell them what they can charge, but this is ridiculous. I fully comprehend that one can set a fee for what the market can bear, but come on! "The foot doctor to the stars" has her "head in the stars" as far as I am concerned and needs to come down to the planet Earth. With this article, she just became the poster child of why DPMs will never get the respect or parity we deserve. I would like to know where the NYSPMA, NY podiatric licensing board, and APMA weigh in on this horrendous slap in the face to the podiatric profession?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) - 1B |
From: Simon Young, DPM
It seems outrageous that foot surgeons' out-of-network charges are paid with such little oversight. As usual, podiatrists are not the only practitioners involved in this practice, but in this case a podiatrist took it to a different level of greed.
How is this different from what insurance companies do to the in-network doctors who are part of the solution to our healthcare crisis? Multiples of millions of dollars are needlessly denied for proper services billed.
United healthcare/oxford screws me regularly and ...
