IN Podiatrist Trains Iraqi Surgeon Here, Then Travels to Haiti
As a young man, Dr. Ibrahem Salah joined thousands of his fellow Kurds on a mass exodus -- an escape, on foot, from deadly chemical bombs being dropped on their villages by Saddam Hussein. Today, he flees his country not out of fear -but out of a quest for medical knowledge.

|
Last week, the Kurdish doctor made his first trip to America to spend several days training and learning from Carmel, IN podiatrist Dr. Patrick DeHeer, who also maintains offices in Columbus and Franklin. DeHeer, 42, typically travels to underdeveloped Third World countries to help people with club feet and other problems. He has been to Iraq, Haiti, Honduras, Trinidad and Ukraine. He leaves again for Haiti in two weeks.
A long gap in getting medical technology has left otherwise well-trained medical professionals at a disadvantage. "They are very good surgeons," said DeHeer, who has spent time with them in Kurdistan. "They just need more special training and experience with surgery." We have a lot of cases of diabetic foot disease and club feet," said Salah. "We have a lot of traumatic injuries like from accidents. And we have a lot of polio." Club foot is prevalent for many children around the world. But in more advanced areas -- such as the United States and Europe -- it is caught in newborns and quickly fixed using plaster and casts, according to DeHeer.

PODIATRISTS IN THE MEDIA |
Emmy Nominated “Dr. Steph” Departs Channel 9
Add Stephanie Clements to the roster of those departing KUSA-Channel 9. "Dr. Steph," as she was known when she covered health issues for the station, is unhappy with the way her exit unfolded. "9News had offered me a contract signed by (general manager) Mark Cornetta but I had hoped to do more negotiating before signing it. My agent didn't have any opportunity to speak with 9News before the contract expired on Feb. 28. I'm expecting 9News to honor its contractual obligations."
|
Dr. Stephanie Clements |
Critics note that Clements is a podiatrist, not an M.D., but her work won a Heartland Emmy nomination for the station in 2005. Rumors on the KUSA grapevine had the doc spitefully erasing her tapes before she left, and getting a lawyer to present her case.
Neither one is true, she says. "I did routine cleaning of my desk and recycled raw tapes back into circulation for the photographers to shoot on again. Leaving them behind for someone else to recycle would have been horribly irresponsible. Not my style." And, she says, her agent, not a lawyer, continues to talk with the station.

AT THE COLLEGES |
NYCPM Again Holds Combined Residency Match and Senior Awards Ceremony
For the third year in a row, the New York College of Podiatric Medicine combined two of its most eagerly anticipated events for fourth-year students, holding them on the same day, one right after the other.
Draper Hall, at Metropolitan Hospital Center, was the scene of much anticipation and excitement on March 13th as more than half of NYCPM’s class of fourth-year students heard their names called to receive merit-based scholarships and awards. All told, and across all four classes, the College awards more than $600,000 in institutional awards and federal financial aid annually.
|
Bruce McClendon with match and winnings |
Immediately following the Senior Awards Ceremony, the students’ names were drawn, one by one, for the Residency Match. As in the past, each student put two dollars in a jar at the front of the auditorium as he or she picked up his or her Residency Match envelope and drew the next name. The mounting suspense was finally broken as the last student whose name was drawn – Bruce McClendon – strode purposefully up to the front of Draper Hall and claimed the entire jarful of dollars.

RESPONSES / COMMENTS |
RE: OsStaple Removal (Daniel Tellem, DPM, Rochester, NY) From: Patric Hardiman, DPM, Doug Smith, DPM
OssStaple removal can be easily accomplished by first cutting the portion of the staple laying on top of the bone with a wire cutter. This allows the staple to be removed in two pieces negating the compression effect. You will find this technique most effective and much easier than trying to remove the staple in one piece.
Patric Hardiman, DPM, Wisconsin Rapids, WI, drhardiman@rapidsfootcare.com
Use a K-wire cutter and cut the staple in the middle. This will release the compression. Then remove each half easily. You may have to remove overgrown bone from around the middle part of the staple first. Doug Smith, DPM, Raleigh, NC, footfixer@nc.rr.com footfixer@nc.rr.com
RE: IL’s Proposed Healthcare Plan (Joseph Borreggine, DPM) From: David Secord, DPM
Medscape has (had) an article by Dabney P Evans, MPH on Public Health and Human Rights which contends several things: 1. Healthcare is a "human right." 2. There is a one to one correlation between "rights violations and health." 3. Military doctors should not be under ANY superior officer and, more to the point, should have the ultimate say-so as ethical directors.
It's been a while since I've read such blatant Marxist drivel and seen it shrouded in supposed academia (with footnotes, no less). This is one of the more frightening things I've read in a while and is a clear window on the secular/progressive movement. It is full of invented casualty counts in the Iraq war, praise for Cuba and its supposedly perfect healthcare system (it is a disaster, by the way) and the end-goal of establishing healthcare as a “human right.” As a “right” it can be forced on society with the costs passed on to the rich (redistribution of wealth).
I encourage you to read this article at: http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/553269
