MI Podiatrist Discusses Achilles Tendon Pain
According to Conway McLean, DPM, "Many Americans suffer from a tight Achilles tendon. This is the largest tendon in the body, with the most force running through it. When tight, it alters the function, the mechanics, of many joints, muscles, ligaments, and more. With excessive pull of the Achilles on the heel, leverage on the joint formed by the 2nd metatarsal and the nearer bone is increased. With sufficient stress, inflammation develops and pain is the result."
|
|
Dr. Conway McLean |
"Treatments are many and varied. But when the root of the problem is your foot and leg biomechanics, the relief [from NSAIDs and steroid injections] is purely temporary. A very different approach is the precise, controlled alteration and improvement of someone’s biomechanics (the specifics of the structure, function and motion of the human body). Although technically difficult, and too often poorly done, the most practical way to do that is with the use of orthotics," says Dr. McLean.

VA Podiatrist Volunteers in Turks and Caicos Islands
Rodney A. Kander, DPM recently returned from Turks and Caicos where he conducted volunteer podiatry clinics throughout the islands. Sponsored by The Turks and Caicos Diabetic Association in conjunction with the Turks and Caicos Ministry of Health, the clinics were held on Grand Turk, the capital of the TCI, as well as multiple locations on the island of Providenciales.

Dr. Rodney Kander (L) and the staff of the Blue Hills Community Clinic, Providenciales, Turks, and Caicos |
During these clinic sessions, Dr. Kander was able to educate patients and staff on how to prevent complications associated with diabetes mellitus. Through the generous donation from the Tetra Corporation, Dr. Kander was able to distribute products that were most helpful to those in need. The recipients of Dr. Kander's care consisted of patients from multi-nations including the indigenous population, and those from Haiti, Africa, and Asian nations.

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
9 Challenges Funding Can Help Your Practice Overcome
Here are 9 common challenges faced by medical practices that alternative funding can help you overcome:
2. Burnout
In a volume-driven industry, seeing more patients per day can increase your revenue, but it can also increase your risk of burnout and erode the relationship between you and your patients. To prevent burnout, medical practice funding can be used to:
-
Take on more practitioners or administrative staff so you can reduce workloads
-
Invest in time-saving technologies to improve your workflow and simplify administration
-
Create wellness programs to encourage your staff to engage in self-care

RE: Detecting Peripheral Neuropathy as Well as Alzheimer’s Disease: The Podiatric Physician's Role
From: Leonard A. Levy, DPM, MPH
In 380 BCE, the great philosopher Plato wrote in a play (i.e., Charmides), “As you ought not to attempt to cure the eyes without the head, or the head without the body, so neither ought you to attempt to cure the body without the soul. And this ….is the reason why the cure of many diseases is unknown to the physicians of Hellas (i.e., Greece), because they disregard the whole, which ought to be studied also, for the part can never be well unless the whole is well.”
A recent publication regarding peripheral neuropathy being tied to a higher risk of subsequent dementia graphically demonstrates Plato’s statement and its relationship to podiatric medicine and its importance not only to the foot but also to its implications to the total health of the body. Sensory nerve impairments alone were associated with a...

RE: MedPAC’s Report to Congress
From: Jeffrey Kass, DPM
On Tuesday, MedPAC in a report to Congress, stated that Medicare physician payments in 2023 don’t need to be increased. Some of the logic behind the decision was that for the most part more doctors participate than don’t. I am wondering who are these people that form MedPAC and are there any groups who vehemently oppose this faulty logic?
I would counter with the argument that the number of private practitioners is decreasing and solo internists are being bought out by hospitals and other groups for the simple reason they can’t survive on the payments they are receiving. Simple math reveals prices of everything have gone up, if reimbursement stays the same, that’s a net loss. Freezing pay is a net loss. I sincerely wonder if any of the MedPAC people are practicing doctors.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (RELEVANT RESEARCH) | |
From: Ivar E. Roth, DPM, MPH
I read with interest about this “new” procedure. It really bothers me that this common problem that can be treated so well with conservative care would have doctors out there coming up with invasive, costly, new procedures. In my opinion, this new procedure is a gimmick. It is an attempt to treat a problem that pretty much can be easily resolved universally by podiatrists. Am I missing something?
