NYCPM Incorporates Anatomage Table to Educational Curriculum
The surgical faculty at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine (NYCPM) recently attended a training session to learn diverse ways to incorporate using the Anatomage Table in their surgical lectures. Clinical cases were reviewed using ways to demonstrate on the table including reconstruction and surgical procedures of the lower extremity. NYCPM has been working with the Anatomage team to improve the table’s ability to demonstrate biomechanics and is sharing the way we use the Anatomage table with other Anatomage users.

NYCPM acquired the Anatomage Table through a generous grant from the Podiatry Foundation. The table has been an integral part of the first and second-year students’ curriculum, and for anatomy and physiology lectures and classroom activities. NYCPM is now exploring ways to fully engage third-year students and residents using the table.

Governor Dan McKee announced he has selected Michael Reuter, DPM to serve on Rhode Island’s Coastal Resources Management Council (CRMC). Dr. Reuter is a board-certified podiatric surgeon at Medical Associates of Rhode Island, Rhode Island Hospital’s Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine and The Miriam Hospital.

NCAPM Hosts 39th Annual No-nonsense Virtual Podiatry Seminar
This past weekend‘s 39th Annual No-nonsense virtual podiatry seminar powered by lerEXPO on behalf of the North Central Academy of Podiatric Medicine (NCAPM) was a resounding success. 454 clinicians logged on for over 30 hours of lectures with topics ranging from surgery, MIS, dermatology, biomechanics, infectious disease, sports medicine, pathology, coding, wound care, diabetes, and more. The overall rating on the value of the education was 4.93 out of five stars with over 72% of the surveys returned. 85% of the attendees had attended a previous LER expo event.

39th Annual No-nonsense Virtual Podiatry Seminar |
The Bunion Roundtable brought together Lowell Weil, DPM, Patrick DeHeer, DPM and Eric Baskin, DPM for an open discussion of MTP fusions, SCARF Akin osteotomies, and MIBS. This conversation was very stimulating and yielded a very lively discussion with dozens of questions and comments. The other roundtables included MIS, surgical complications and revisions, surgical solutions for diabetics, sports medicine, and infectious disease.

RE: MCR Part C to be Paid $84B in Overpayments in 2025

In today's Becker's Health Newsletter, Medpac announced that the MCR Part C industry will be handed over $84B in overpayments this year. This includes paying more for patient care than if the patient was in a traditional fee-for-service plan and the ever-present upcoding patient data to secure a higher monthly payment from CMS.
Now think about this, how many federal employees’ jobs could be saved with $84B? How many more patients could CMS afford to save if proper preventative healthcare initiatives were instituted? One such way is to do away w/this absurd routine foot care LCD and enable every geriatric patient to see a DPM as needed for what is alleged to be "routine foot care". CMS continues to pay out billions of dollars to healthcare companies, fattening their stockholders and C-suite executives, who deny care and rake in profits. Physicians have endured a 20% or more reduction in pay (adjusted for inflation) over the past decade and Congress seems to be clueless to do anything. When will this madness stop?

Dr. Chaskin’s point that the clearing physician should be the one who is held responsible if a patient develops a pulmonary embolism brings us back to the long hashed discussions on PM News. Those discussions germinated from those of us who took courses in general physical examinations, who wanted to do their own medical clearances.
The counter argument was that most orthopedic surgeons, ophthalmologists, and other medical surgical subspecialists would always defer to an internist or family practitioner to do his or her pre-op examinations. So why should podiatrists not follow this? The answer lies in Dr. Chaskin's reasoning that if the patient should have a post-op medical complication, only the clearing MD or DO should be held accountable, not the podiatrist.
