Olympic Swimmer Teams with WesternU to Promote Podiatric Medicine
Gary Hall Jr. is a 10-time Olympic medalist in swimming, a vocal diabetes advocate, and now, he is partnering with Western University of Health Sciences’ College of Podiatric Medicine (CPM) to promote the podiatric medicine profession. Hall Jr. serves on the College of Podiatric Medicine Dean's Advisory Board. He is also partnering with CPM to increase awareness of podiatric medicine and surgery.

“I’m really excited at the opportunity and appreciative to be associated with such a prestigious institution,” Hall Jr. said. “I’m really looking forward to thinking creatively about ways that we can promote the profession and get the people that need help the help they need.” Hall Jr. won two gold and two silver medals at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games. In March 1999, as he was preparing for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

Magruder Hospital recently welcomed NOMS Northern Ohio Foot & Ankle to Port Clinton. Podiatrists Kareem Dolce, DPM, Marc Dolce, DPM, and Nicholas Brown, DPM will provide podiatric services and treatments for foot and ankle conditions, as well as outpatient foot surgery. Dr. Brown received his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine at Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine. He completed his Primary Podiatric Medical Residency at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center, Brooklyn, New York, and Podiatric Surgical Residency at St. Louis Veteran Affairs Medical Center, St. Louis, Missouri.

Arthur Public Library Hosts IN Podiatrist
The Arthur Public Library was honored to host a large crowd which very much enjoyed the presentation on Saturday, March 4, by Alex Kor, DPM, son of famed Holocaust survivor and forgiveness advocate Eva Kor (a Menege experiment twin). Alex grew up in Terre Haute, Indiana and is a podiatrist. The family came to live in Terre Haute because the soldier who liberated the camp where his father, Mickey, also a Holocaust survivor, was held was from Terre Haute.

In 1978, the mini-series Holocaust was aired and this changed things for the family. At this point, Eva became more outspoken about the experiences of Holocaust survivors. Later on, Eva and her twin sister Miriam founded the Candles Holocaust and Museum Education Center located in Terre Haute. This organization was an effort to locate other Mengele twins who survived. As a result they were able to locate 122 other twins in ten countries and on four continents. The museum opened in 1995.

"I'm a foot doctor and wanted to create an improved means to off-load a foot that is fractured, post-operative, or suffering from an ulceration, so I invented the TJS Walking Roller. My design would be easy to use and it should ease the patient's recovery," said inventor Timothy J. Scott, DPM from Clarion, PA.

The patent-pending invention provides a new mobility aid for individuals who have had a lower leg injury, surgery, or ulceration to a foot. In doing so, it offers a hands-free alternative to crutches or a walker. As a result, it increases safety and independence. The invention features a practical and convenient design that is easy to use, transport, and store; so it is ideal for individuals who are non-weight-bearing. Dr. Scott is currently seeking a professional prototype builder.

PA Podiatrist is 50,000th Patient Treated with Non-surgical Alternative to Mohs Surgery
Jeffrey Keating, DPM is the nation's 50,000th patient to have non-melanoma skin cancer successfully treated with GentleCure, a non-surgical alternative to Mohs surgery. GentleCure is the only treatment for non-melanoma skin cancer (basal and squamous cell carcinomas) that uses ultrasound imaging to help clinicians direct low-level x-ray energy to targeted areas of the skin, killing cancer cells without surgery. Peer-reviewed studies show that the technology produces a 99.3 percent cure rate for early stage non-melanoma skin cancers, making it just as effective as traditional Mohs surgery.

The patient, Dr. Keating, said his lifestyle choices, including golfing, sailing, and enjoying driving in his top-down convertible, likely contributed to his history of skin cancer. He had earlier undergone Mohs surgery for a non-melanoma lesion on his calf. "As a podiatric physician myself, I know that it is critically important, and actually required, to educate patients about all their treatment options. Actually seeing the cancer shrink and disappear on the ultrasound imaging screen was so re-assuring."

So one of my state bayou plans (AmerihealthCaritas) limited podiatrists on their ability to dispense certain DME items and absolutely no custom devices, but I was able to work with the state Medicaid office and Amerihealth and remove these restrictions/barriers so we can treat their patients the same as those with all the other Medicaid plans. Being on the APMA Billing & Coding committee, along with being on the Board of the America Academy of Podiatric Practice Management, has helped give me the insight on how to navigate some of these issues.
