PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
 FL Podiatrists Discuss Barefoot Walking

Barefoot walking may reduce inflammation and improve sleep: Walking barefoot helps ground the body, regulating the body's electrical systems, says Suzanne Fuchs, DPM, a board-certified podiatrist and sports medicine specialist based in Palm Beach, FL. It can also stimulate nerve endings in the feet, enhance sensory input to the brain, and boost overall foot function — all of which can help improve sleep and reduce pain and inflammation.

(L-R) Drs. Suzanne Fuchs and Jodi Schoenhaus

But Jodi Schoenhaus, DPM warns that what you see in a TikTok video isn't barefoot walking as medicine intends it. Most of the research done on barefoot walking, or grounding, is analyzed based on participants walking on the natural earth (like minerals and grass). "The TikTok users are walking on concrete and man-made surfaces," Dr. Fuchs says. "Natural surfaces like grass, sand, or dirt provide more varied terrain and require the feet to adapt to different textures, which can further enhance the benefits of barefoot walking."

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL-LEGAL)
From: Raymond F Posa, MBA

Regarding Dr. Dellinger’s question about interpreters; The answer from OCR’s FAQ’s "Are Doctors Required to Provide Interpreters for Medical Visits and Other Medical-Related Situations?"  The short answer is yes. This is covered under the Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities by places of public accommodation. 42 U.S.C. Š 12181 - Š 12189. Private health care providers are considered places of public accommodation. The Department of Justice has issued regulations for the obligations of public accommodations under Title III at 28 C.F.R. Part 36. The Department's Analysis to this regulation is at 56 Fed. Reg. 35544 et seq. (July 26, 1991).

Raymond F Posa, MBA, Prescott, AZ

Editor's comment: PM News does not provide legal advice. Mr. Posa is correct and the initial response to this query has been corrected.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (APMA HOD) - PART 1A
From: Marc, Feder, DPM, Steven Spinner, DPM

As our APMA House of Delegates convenes, I wish to share my excitement about Proposition 2-24. 30 years ago, I campaigned for "One Board, One Profession. I had written Letters to the Editors of APMA News, Podiatry Management, and Podiatry Today. At my meetings with CPME (headed then by Jay Levrio), I spoke of this to then Board Member Jim Christina and ABPS President, Vinny Martorano. No consideration was given. Perhaps the time has come for this dream to come true.

Marc Feder, DPM, Lincolnwood, IL

Driving through Georgia one day, I got stopped for doing 10 miles over the speed limit (Okay…it may have been more) by a Georgia state trooper. When he asked for my license and registration, I discreetly opened my wallet so that he could see I had a Broward sheriff’s office badge and identification card. Although my credentials at the time were legitimate, his comment to me was “you boys from Florida all have those so put it away.

It became a meaningless credential because the impression was that every car from Florida that was speeding could whip out a police credential and hope to get out of a ticket. We are not a uniform profession with uniform training. We are a diverse profession made up of many talented people practicing different aspects of podiatric medicine and surgery. To confer board certification from one board on everybody in our profession would render that credential as meaningless as a...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (APMA HOD) - PART 1B
From: Philip Radovic, DPM

While the call for unity within our profession is understandable, when it comes to a single board certification, it's important to consider the perspectives and needs of all stakeholders involved. When it comes to consolidating foot surgery and reconstructive rearfoot/ankle surgery, here are some points to consider:

1. Protecting the Public: Board certification serves as an important measure to ensure that we have met specific standards of competence and expertise in our specialty. It provides reassurance to patients that their podiatrist has undergone rigorous training and assessment, thus safeguarding their health and well-being.

2. Credentialing for Medical/Surgery Centers and Hospitals: Most hospitals and medical centers rely on board certification to evaluate the qualifications of...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
From: Joseph Grillo, DPM, Eric Trattnor, DPM

I too had had trigger fingers. These are very painful and annoying. I had injections also to no avail. I was offered PRP injections and surgery. I chose to go for broke. I have my own radial pulse therapy machine in my office that I use for plantar fasciitis. I gave it a shot on my trigger fingers. Don't ask me how-but it worked.

I gave myself repeated pulses every 5 days. It took five or ten treatments but it got rid of them. Do yourself a favor-skip the surgery-find someone in your community who has an Enpuls RPT device and give it a go. It can't hurt to try and can save a lot of headaches and disability for surgery that may or may not work.

Joseph Grillo, DPM, Ft. Myers, FL

I also had a trigger finger of the 4th finger on my dominant hand. It was easily released by a hand surgeon in the office with a needle, no incision, glue or sutures. The post-op course was virtually painless. It was suggested that I take a week-10 days off, but I returned to a full schedule in about 3-4 days. It’s true, self-employed people heal much faster than others.

Eric Trattnor, DPM, Twinsburg, OH

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2
From: Paul Kesselman DPM

While there are not many 80+ year olds in leadership positions in podiatry, there is one here in NY for whom if I did not comment I would simply be ashamed. Dr. Arthur Gudeon has been a shining light in this profession here in NY for more than 60 years. He is 89 and shows no signs of slowing down. There are many podiatric bambinos who Arthur has mentored and yet he still finds time to practice and play tennis a few days a week. If not for Arthur, podiatry would certainly not be where it is today in NYS.
