UT Podiatrist Discusses Preventive Measures for Flat Feet
Mike Rushton, DPM is co-founder and Medical Director of Forward Motion Medical and JM Orthotics based in St. George, Utah. He recommends that individuals engage in stretching exercises involving the feet, just as we would stretch any other area of the body. "Stretching exercises before and after physical activity can be helpful to prevent or alleviate pain caused by flat feet," he says. "By stretching the tendons and ligaments, it can improve the elasticity and counteract some of the negative effects of having pes planus."
|
|
Dr. Michael Rushton |
"Arch supports or pre-fabricated orthotics can help provide some of the shock absorption and support that people with flat feet are lacking. Feet with collapsing arches don't get that natural rebound that healthy feet have and this can cause strain to ligaments and muscles. Arch supports redistribute the pressure and put the arch back into a better shape," Dr. Rushton says.

NY Podiatrist Honored at St. Patrick's Dinner
As winter turns to spring, holiday donations are on the wane. But the effort to restock inventories and supply food soup kitchens continues with Project Hospitality’s Emergency fund drive with the annual St. Joseph’s Table, St. Patrick’s Day Song Dinner.
|
|
Dr. Craig Campbell |
The honorees saluted for their overall generosity to the Staten Island community include Craig Campbell, DPM (the Msgr. Bartley award). Dr. Campbell said, “Msgr. Bartley was my pastor at St. Paul’s for many years. He was the epitome of what a priest should be. I am totally honored to be the inaugural recipient of the Msgr. Bartley memorial from an amazing Project Hospitality.”

The 15th Annual International External Fixation Symposium (IEFS) was held March 11-12, 2023 on the campus of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA). "These two doctors are tireless educators, innovators, and serve as ambassadors to the world for external fixation methods. This award represents a giant expression of gratitude from the surgical community and countless patients who have had their lives improved by the methods taught by Dr. Samchukov and Dr. Cherkashin," said Collin Pehde, DPM, course director and Assistant Professor of Orthopaedics at UTHSCSA. Endo Provides Results from Phase 2 Study of CCH for Plantar Fibromatosis
Endo International PLC has announced top-line results from its Phase 2 clinical study of collagenase clostridium histolyticum (CCH) in participants with plantar fibromatosis. While the primary endpoint when analyzed with the overall study population did not meet statistical significance, a large patient sub-population showed statistically significant improvement. The primary endpoint was improvement from baseline in the Foot Function Index (FFI) Pain Scale score when compared to those receiving a placebo.
|
|
Dr. Joseph Caporusso |
"This clinical study was designed to test multiple variables with a goal to identify an optimal path to Phase 3 development, and we were successful in doing that," said Joseph M. Caporusso, DPM, a Texas-based podiatrist and a lead clinical investigator for the Phase 2 study. "We look forward to further investigation of CCH in patients with plantar fibromatosis with the ultimate goal of providing patients the first non-surgical treatment for this condition."

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
How to Protect Your Practice from a Data Breach
As medical practices become increasingly dependent on digital systems, the threat of a data breach looms larger than ever. A data breach can lead to significant financial losses and damage your practice’s reputation, eroding trust with your patients. Here are some best practices to avoid data breaches:
7. Conduct regular security training - Regular security training can aid employees in readily recognizing data security attacks like phishing, which has recently become a prevalent issue. Cybersecurity training also instills a heightened sense of security awareness and vigilance among staff.
Employees will gain a better understanding of how their routine actions can impact the organization's security and learn how to respond to suspected data breaches or other cyber-related incidents appropriately.

Query: Second Neuroma Surgery
Several months ago, I removed a Morton’s neuroma. The patient had prolonged pain and inflammation during the recovery. A second surgery and excision revealed residual inflammatory tissue and the biopsy showed fragments of a neuroma. What code should I bill for the second surgery? Excision of neuroma?
Codingline Member
Response: The appropriate CPT code to bill for this procedure is CPT 28080 which is defined as the following: Excision, interdigital (Morton)neuroma, single, each. This is as specific as one can be. Of course, CPT 28080 would be appended by the correct anatomical modifier, RT or LT.
Following the procedure that was initially performed, pain and inflammation persisted, necessitating the surgeon to perform additional surgery, an excision within the same anatomical site where the initial procedure was performed. Residual inflammatory tissue was discovered. The biopsy that was performed on the submitted tissue identified fragments of a neuroma.
Based upon the anatomical location of the identified “neuroma,” within the same interspace that the initial surgical procedure was performed, the correct coding scenario would be the following: CPT 28080 – RT/LT. I believe that one additional modifier would additionally need to be appended. That would be modifier -76 which is defined as the following: REPEATED PROCEDURE BY THE SAME PHYSICIAN – It may be necessary to indicate that a procedure or service was repeated subsequent to the original procedure or service. This circumstance may be reported by adding modifier -76 to the repeated procedure or service. Therefore, the correct billing scenario is the following: CPT 28080 – RT/LT, -76.
