MEETING NEWS
MPMA-Great Lakes Conference Draws Over 300 DPMs

The 2019 Michigan Podiatric Medical Association (MPMA) Great Lakes Conference (GLC) was one of the best conferences in years. Don't take our word for it. The initial survey results suggest the 320-plus podiatric physicians who attended the GLC enjoyed it as well. After exhibitors, speakers, and guests were included, the final attendance was just short of 500.

2019 Kaplan-Kanat Memorial Lecture presenter, Dr. Molly Judge with Dr. Randy Kaplan

This year much of the GLC was devoted to celebrating the successful efforts to clarify the Michigan podiatric scope of practice. That legislation was signed into law in late 2018. Not only did the MPMA commemorate the legislative achievement, MPMA leadership addressed the attendees on what the new language means for them as they continue to practice podiatry in Michigan and how the MPMA intends to use the new scope to attract young physicians to practice in Michigan.

PODIATRIC EMPLOYEES AND THE LAW
FL Couple Charged in Prescription-Fraud Scheme

A northern Palm Beach County couple has been arrested for their alleged roles in a scheme to fraudulently obtain prescription pain medication. Cheryl Rexroad, 55 and her husband Stanley Lyons, 51, were each arrested in February on multiple counts of trafficking in oxycodone and obtaining a controlled substance by fraud.

According to Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office investigators, Rexroad, Lyons, and Fuse filled fraudulent prescriptions at various pharmacies in northern and central Palm Beach County, using prescription pads that were stolen from a Jupiter podiatrist's office. Authorities say Rexroad worked as the office manager for a podiatrist’s office and used that access to steal prescription pads from her employer.

QUERIES (MEDICAL-LEGAL)
Query: Dealing with a Patient who Makes Physical Overtures Toward Staff?

One of my male patients made some physical overtures (tried to touch) my office manager. She was quite offended and after he left, she came to me to complain. How should such an event be handled in the future?

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL)
Query: Creating a Facebook Page

I have had a website for several years, but I am considering creating a presence on Facebook. I would like to know if my colleagues who have Facebook pages have any tips or suggestions on setting up a practice Facebook page. Does it consume a lot of time adding content regularly? Has it proved to be a significant source of new patients (compared to print or other advertising)?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES)
RE: The Passing of Selwyn Bottinick, DPM

Dr. Selwyn Bottinick died on Saturday, March 9, 2019. He is a 1956 graduate of the New York College of Podiatric Medicine and practiced in the greater Washington area. He was a good friend and an ethical practitioner.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (RELEVANT RESEARCH)
From: Robert Scott Steinberg, DPM

This is, in my opinion, a very superficial and poorly done study. Anyone care to comment?
