PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS - PART 1 |
NY Podiatrist Injects Sculptra to Treat Metatarsalgia
New York City podiatrist Dr. Krista Archer is treating patients suffering from foot pain with a product that is often thought of as a beauty treatment for a younger looking complexion. The beauty product known as Sculptra is made from poly-L-lactic acid which helps to replace collagen where fat has been lost. Dr. Archer is using it to create padding in the balls of the feet in order to relieve pain. Once exclusively used for people’s faces to reduce signs of aging, Sculptra is now also being used to give a "foot lift" to help patients with metatarsalgia.
|
Dr. Krista Archer |
"The balls of the feet get tender as we age, but now science can help us to give patients more padding and fullness in their feet. There is an alternative to forsaking your favorite pair of sky high Louboutins," states Dr. Archer. "The same dermal filler that is used in the face to fill deep lines and make us look younger can also make our feet feel younger."

PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS - PART 2 |
PA Podiatrist Among Highest Paid by Big Pharma
A Philadelphia foot doctor was named one of a few dozen physicians across the nation who have earned more than $200,000 in lucrative part-time speaking and consulting work for drug companies. Dr. Warren S. Joseph, of Huntingdon Valley, was No. 5 on ProPublica's list of "Top Earners." ProPublica is a non-profit news organization devoted to investigative journalism. The list of doctors is the latest in their series, Dollars for Docs.
|
Dr. Warren Joseph |
Joseph practices podiatry at Roxborough Memorial Hospital and the Coatesville VA Medical Center, according to ProPublica. During the last four years, Joseph reaped $652,412 in speaking, consulting, travel, and other fees from three pharmaceutical companies. In a 2010 story in the Inquirer, Joseph acknowledged receiving drug company money. He pointed out that diabetic foot ulcers cause more than 80,000 amputations each year. By getting the word out, "I'm saving limbs," he told reporter Faye Flam.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY |
IN Podiatrist Receives Small Business of the Year Award
Each year, members of the Greater Seymour Chamber of Commerce gather for an opportunity to honor those in the community who have made a difference and are contributing to the community. Dr. Walt and Jan Warren received the Small Business of the Year award. The couple owns Comprehensive Foot and Ankle where Dr. Warren is a practicing podiatrist. Jan started as a teacher at Seymour High School.
|
Dr. Walter Warren |
Chamber President Bill Bailey said that some patients could tell the practice was also the couple's home. "Many of Walt's patients with late afternoon appointments could smell Jan's cooking in the next room after school," he said, which drew some laughter. "Three things attracted us to Seymour," Walt said. "The size, both Jan and I were from small towns; the location, and the community in general."

Earlier this month, Dr. Ben Pearl of Arlington, VA was interviewed for "Mayi el Show" on Telemundo for the DC Metro Area. The show features interviews by the young reporter on various topics that are important to the Latin community.
|
Dr. Ben Pearl on Telemundo |

QUERIES (CLINICAL) |
Query: Rigid Shoes and Stress Fractures
When we give our patients the advice "to wear some other kind of rigid shoes," what does that really mean? Where do we find "rigid shoes" when almost all shoes are made out of flexible EVA and PU foams, and soles made of flexible rubber? Some shoes may have re-inforced shanks, but they only extend to the midfoot. Which shoes reduce the pressure and shearing moment under the metatarsal heads enough to heal and protect from stress fractures? Are there studies that confirm that rigid shoes do that?
Steven King, DPM, Maui, HI

QUERIES (NON-CLINCAL) |
Query: ICD-10 Preparation
What steps have PM News readers taken to prepare for ICD-10? Are there any seminars geared for training the docs as well as coders specific to podiatry?

RE: Macrodactyly (Tip Sullivan, DPM)
From: Tip Sullivan, DPM
I would like to clarify the pictures posted regarding this issue. The post-op picture was after stage one which basically involved osseous reconstruction. After the second surgery, the plantar forefoot and digit were carefully debulked to a much more normal appearance.
|
Macrodactyly Post-op |
One of the most interesting things that I noticed in this case was not podiatric! This young man had been embarrassed about his foot for his entire life. It had affected his entire demeanor. He would not hold his head up. He would not look you in the eye. He was very soft spoken and introverted. After about 6 months, his affect was totally different; he became outgoing, talkative, and engaging (and he began dating). His mom told me that his whole attitude had changed. Chalk one up for the foot guys!

RE: Efficacy of Lasers for Onychomycosis (Burton Katzen, DPM)
From: Amedeo L Fortuna, DPM
I tend to agree with Dr. Katzen's assessment. If the laser company purports and pitches a thin beautiful nail after treatment by picture representation only, then that's what should be expected. It seems like a bait and switch to now say that the laser treatment kills the fungi, but the nail continues to be thick and ugly. Then, the same post-treatment pictures should continue to exhibit a thick ugly nail along with a copy of pre- and post-pathology reports.
If the only goal was a negative pathology report, I could think of many ways to accomplish that objective, and with third-party coverage. We also know that the primary concern of the patient is a normal looking nail, and not a negative pathology report. Therein lies the conundrum.
Amedeo L Fortuna, DPM, Bellmawr, NJ, afortuna@snip.net

RE: Inexpensive Cast Cutter
From: Joseph S Borreggine, DPM
I had to replace my cast cutter this past year and realized that a cordless multi-purpose tool with a lithium ion rechargeable battery from Sears with the tile grout cutter attachment works just as well as any cordless orthopedic cast cutter at a 3,000% savings. Look it up on the Internet or shop yourself to see what I am talking about.
