Surgeons Can Now Get Bones, Stem Cells 'Off The Shelf': CA Podiatrist
When patients need a bone graft for a foot or ankle surgery, bone often is taken from another part of their body. Now surgeons are using new methods to get bone material and even stem cells right "off the shelf," according to Glenn M. Weinraub, DPM, FACFAS, a California foot and ankle surgeon who lead a discussion among surgeons on the next decade of bone healing at the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons' (ACFAS) Annual Scientific Conference in Fort Lauderdale.

"Harvesting a patient's own bone has always been considered the gold standard, but nowadays I think that concept should be thought of as the historical standard," said Dr. Weinraub, president of ACFAS. "The quality of the material that is available in a pre-packaged format has been shown to be just as effective for bone healing and may yield fewer complications for the patient."

PA Podiatrist to Bring Foot Care to Sierra Leone
Africa Lower Limb Institute (ALL In) officially launched its campaign to bring awareness to Africans about podiatric foot care and education on Saturday March 5th 2011. This auspicious event held in Washington D.C. officially turned a passionate dream into reality for the institute’s founder, Dr. Noahleen Betts, a Sierra Leonean podiatric foot surgeon, who runs her own private practice in Reading, Pennsylvania, USA.

At the function, which also dubbed as a fund-raising event, the audience got a glimpse of the power behind Dr. Betts’ commitment and passion to address this neglected area of healthcare in most places in Africa.

NY Podiatrist Follows a Pipe Dream
Dr. Michael Hanzly is a podiatrist in South Buffalo, but playing the bagpipes is his real passion. Initially drawn to bagpipes by their haunting sound, this student of history has learned all he can about the Great Highland Bagpipe that dates back to 4000 B.C.

It wasn't until a decade ago -- when Hanzly turned 50 -- that he decided to buy his own set of bagpipes at the urging of his wife. He joined a band, bought four kilts, and he has dedicated much of his spare time to piping -- marching with the Blackthorn Club in St. Patrick's Day parades and performing with his band, the Trinity Episcopal Pipes and Drums.

Federal Court Agrees to Fast-Track ACA Appeal
A federal appeals court has agreed to act swiftly in considering a Florida judge's ruling that President Barack Obama's healthcare overhaul is unconstitutional. The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta said that it had agreed to expedite the appeal concerning the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, setting a faster timetable than even the federal government had requested
The decision means the federal government must file its first set of court papers on the issues in the case by April 4, and the state of Florida has until May 4 to file its papers. The federal government would file additional papers by May 18. The appeals court said it had not made a decision on a request that the initial review be held before all 10 federal judges.

RE: Sending Patients' Accounts to Collections (David Weiss, DPM)
From: Richard A. Simmons, DPM
The question I have is: Why aren't deductibles and other patient-responsible payments collected at the time of service? There are many services available that allow any practitioner to know the patient's financial responsibility within minutes  I suggest using them to avoid this headache. Medicare and some contracts "include the fee for collecting payments" in the allowable fee, which basically means you cannot charge the patient anything more than the allowable amount. Hence, no finance fees or penalty fees. I believe it was a few weeks ago in this forum where I read that some DPMs were getting credit card imprints from patients before service was rendered to take care of situations such as yours.

RE: The Affordable Healthcare Act of 2010 /Obamacare (Barry Block, DPM, JD)
From: Carlos Montes, Jr., DPM, MS
Promoting the general health and welfare is written indelibly in our constitution. Making healthcare a priority in our country, therefore, should be of prime importance and fiscally prudent. Giving consideration to moral and just ramifications in a civil society, it boggles the mind where this debate remains. Listening to ideological talking points, such as "Obamacare" should be beneath intelligent debate and clearly defines where you stand. The correct name of this bill is the Affordable Healthcare Act of 2010, not "Obamacare."
I find our Editor's comment offensive in the fact he stokes the fires of illogic and ideology. The problem lies in the cost of care, which in my view and experience has several facets, one being the extraction of value by third-party private insurance who deliver no care at all. If one would look clearly without ideological prism, the answer is single payor.  But the powers that be will have none of that. It will ultimately come to pass when reason prevails, not greed or blind ideology. Words do matter and fog clear thinking. But I do agree with your last sentence, yes, this "Supreme Court" will certainly "decide" the matter to the detriment of the public good.
Carlos Montes, Jr., DPM, MS, Rockledge, FL , Cimontesjr@aol.com
Editor's comment: The general media, as well as Democrats and Republicans have referred to the Affordable Healthcare Act of 2010 as "Obamacare." It is common practice to reduce the long euphemistic names that Congress often gives to bills to simpler terms. If a bill is considered good, then the person who it is named after should be honored, e.g., Sherman Anti-Trust Act.
