PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY - PART 1
OH Podiatrist Pitches Podiatry Career to Third Graders

Hard hats, scrub caps, and junior deputy badges were gear that some Falls-Lenox Primary School third-graders wore Friday in their cafeteria. It was the annual Third Grade Career Day, where parents of many of these students brought their work to school. Each parent set up an area on tables to describe their work.

Eight-year-old Anna Sullivan donned foot protection, a scrub cap and gloves as part of Dr. Joseph Bartal’s demonstration as a podiatrist with Southwest Foot and Ankle Associates. She learned how to sew stitches into material Bartal provided. She enjoyed the experience. “I thought it was lots of fun. I learned things I didn’t know about,” the third-grader said.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
4 Steps to a Successful Post-Merger Integration Process - Part 4

In order to be successful, a merger must be followed up with a detailed course of action. Here are several specific places where physician groups routinely stub their toes when merging. But, if you get them right, your success rate will soar.

4. Communication - In medical practice mergers, good communication is by far the simplest and cheapest way of reducing uncertainty and stress—two of the biggest causes of dysfunctional deals. Good communication can:
  • ease or shorten the inevitable periods of reduced productivity;
  • build trust with stakeholders;
  • prevent the loss of key staff, patients, and valued referring physicians;
  • clarify objectives and unify focus;
  • ensure preparedness for expected changes; and
  • pre-empt or deflate competitive rumors and disinformation.
Start by being up-front and direct about the rationale behind the deal. Don’t assume that its logic and benefits are self-evident to employees or others. To the greatest extent possible, have clear and concise answers to the one question at the top of everyone’s mind: “All that sounds fine, but how will the merger affect me?”

CODINGLINE CORNER
Query: How to Find an LCD

How do I find the LCD for CPT 11721 or any other CPT codes?

John Scholl, DPM, The Villages, FL

Response: LCDs are Medicare regs. Check your Medicare carrier’s website as all LCDs are posted there. Medicare carriers also have list-serves so you can get newsletters which give updates on policies, webinars, etc. You have to sort through and find postings that are relevant to our profession.

Keep in mind that LCDs only apply to Medicare. All other carriers have their own policies which may or may not parallel Medicare’s. Those too are posted on their respective websites. I would focus on those carriers that are prevalent in your area so that you know how to properly bill your most common carriers.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES)

Bill Harris was my friend and classmate (lab partner). He continued to work despite several debilitating injuries. Later in practice, he consulted for the VA. He was a nice guy and a dedicated podiatrist. Gone too soon. RIP Bill.
