PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY - PART 1
CT Podiatrist to Launch Downtown Practice

New Canaan resident Dr. Jennifer Tauber has been a working mom ever since she became a mother. A Wilton native, she’d already earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Manhattan College and doctorate of podiatric medicine from New York College of Podiatric Medicine when she married and then moved to New Canaan 15 years ago.

Dr. Jennifer Tauber

Tauber completed her residency at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx, and after just a few years, settled into her second job in podiatry, joining the staff of a small practice in Bethel for a 12-year stint that would help provide a foundation in her chosen field. For Tauber, New Canaan Podiatry is a also far more than a chance to run her own practice the way she wants (“I want it to be mine”), benefit fully from her own hard work and expertise, and control its growth, sports medicine-focused services, and progress.

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRY IN THE NEWS
UK MP Supports Launch of College of Podiatry Report

Member of Parliament Rosie Cooper joined the College of Podiatry in Parliament to give her backing to the launch of a new report. The event highlighted the unique role of podiatrists in tackling some of the biggest healthcare challenges facing people in West Lancashire.

Member of Parliament Rosie Cooper

The report, "Podiatry: Driving value, improving outcomes - The vital role of podiatry in keeping our population active – saving lives and saving limbs" covers three key areas in which podiatrists contribute their expertise and demonstrate their value. They are: 1. Diabetes and vascular disease, specifically foot ulceration and amputation prevention, conditions which cost the NHS around £1 billion per year. 2. Falls prevention, particularly among the elderly, which costs the NHS and social care around £2.3bn every year, and rising. 3. Musculoskeletal conditions, which consume around 5% of the NHS budget.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY

How Can Other Practices Improve Your Online Reputation? - Part 5

Today, online reputation management is crucial for the survival and growth of any practice. The ever-growing competition is making it tough for practices to outshine others. So instead of getting worried about what others are doing, it’s time to learn from them and improve yourself. Let’s see how your competitors can benefit you by improving your online reputation.

5.  Social media presence

Everyone is on some social media platform. In addition to socializing with friends and family, these platforms let you share your knowledge, reviews, concerns, and much more. It has made the world a small place where anyone can be in touch with another person. Take a look at various social media platforms to see how your competitors are replying to their patients and how are they engaging their target audiences. This analysis will help you build stronger marketing strategies.

If you don’t have an active account on social media platforms, create one as soon as possible. Implement social media marketing strategies and post relevant forms of content that showcase your thought-leader personality in front of your existing and potential patients. This will help you build a strong online reputation.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CODINGLINE CORNER)
From: Doug Richie, DPM

I have another follow-up question for Dr. Kesselman: It is assumed in this situation with Dr. Kaczander, that he, the podiatric physician, performs the initial evaluation of the patient, bills the E/M code and then refers this patient to the certified orthotist in that same office. If this certified orthotist does the casting, fitting, and adjustment of the AFO device, who bills Medicare for the L-code? Is is proper for the physician/employer of the certified orthotist to bill Medicare for the L-code when he/she never performed the casting, fitting, and adjustment? This practice is becoming more common in our profession and needs clarification.

Doug Richie, DPM, Seal Beach, CA

Response: It is impossible to provide one universal response which applies to all the possible scenarios posed by this follow-up question. The first part of the question implies the DPM is referring the patient to someone in the same office. Does the referral constitute a "hand off" to the other person to evaluate and treat that patient or is the DPM still involved in that aspect of the treatment?

The second part of the question infers...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
RE: Funded Podiatric Medical Research: An Overlooked Potential Source of  Revenue for Education and Training
From: Leonard A. Levy, DPM, MPH

In the March 9, 2018 issue of PM News, I reported on the obvious benefits of podiatric medical research to the profession, other professions, and the lay public. One very important thing not mentioned is the very important benefit of funded research to medical school revenue. It should be noted that the Association of American Medical Colleges reports annually the sources of revenue for allopathic medical schools. In both private and public schools granting the MD degree, tuition provided only about 4 percent per year of the total revenue.

In 2016, for example, federal and private grants provided 22 percent of medical school revenue (source: Association of American Medical Colleges, 2016). While the grants I was able to acquire certainly directly supported research, they also provided a considerable amount for salaries and fringe benefits of faculty and support staff as well as equipment, travel, and consumable supplies. The time is long overdue to make funded research a priority in podiatric medical education.
