Delray Medical Center has announced that Arin Sheingold, DPM has joined the hospital’s medical staff. Dr. Sheingold earned his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine at Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine in 2007.

| CYBERSECURITY AND HEALTHCARE | |
CyberAttack Cripples U.S. Healthcare Services
An ongoing cyberattack, lasting more than 2 weeks, has had a substantial impact on cancer practices and their patients in the United States. Change Healthcare, a subsidiary of UnitedHealth, took its systems offline after a cyberattack by BlackCat/ALPHV ransomware group. The American Hospital Association said that this massive interruption is the “most significant cyberattack on the US healthcare system in American history.”
On February 21, Change Healthcare experienced an outside cybersecurity threat. When it became aware of the issue, the company disconnected its systems to prevent any further issues. Change Healthcare said that it has a “high level” of confidence that the cyberattack did not affect Optum, UnitedHealthcare, and UnitedHealth Group systems, stating it was an isolated attack on Change Healthcare. However, Change Healthcare has not said whether patient information has been compromised. Change Healthcare recommends that clinicians use manual methods such as calling the payer’s provider service line to check patients’ claim status and complete eligibility verification and prior authorizations.

| QUERIES (BILLING AND CODING) | |
Query: CPT 99213 for ICD-10 B35.1
I billed a CPT 99213 for ICD-10 B35.1 because it was an E/M for treatment with Penlac for a patient with no other qualifiers. This claim was denied for Medicare with the only DX billed as B35.1. I contacted Medicare and reviewed the rejection. It was denied because B35.1 is recognized with routine foot care. Attached is the document that was reviewed. The DX code B35.1 is associated with routine foot care and requires the debridement codes. I'm being told It cannot be billed with an E&M as the ONLY and/or PRIMARY diagnosis. Routine Foot Care starts on page 244.
My billing office is telling me my argument is that this is a DX code and should be reimbursable by payers when billed with an E&M. What recourse do I have?

Dr. Kirby is 100% correct in sounding the alarm that residency programs and probably the profession as a whole are not doing enough to train podiatrists in biomechanics and orthoses. There is a light at the end of the tunnel and Dr. Kirby is a shining example. He is sponsored by a lab and writes columns on biomechanics and lectures all over the world. The Root lab is also sponsoring weekly educational write-ups on different aspects of biomechanics. Every podiatry lab should do what it takes to hire the Kevin Kirbys of our profession and promote biomechanics at seminars, conventions, at the schools, and on forums such as PM News online.
The model that needs to be followed is how pharmaceutical companies promote their drugs. They advertise in every medical medium and don't depend upon the medical profession to do their bidding. This is what our podiatry labs need to do or the ultimate future will be that the healthcare profession will no longer consider podiatrists experts in biomechanics and foot orthoses.

I want to thank the AMERX Corporation for their continued support of our Central Coupeville Whidbey Island Lion's International Project. With the help of Jennifer Creel, executive assistant at AMERX a pallet of wound care supplies were delivered to Calexico, CA. The Lion's club in Mexicali will deliver the supplies to the General Hospital in Mexicali after the importing business is taken care of.
AMERX has been an outstanding company to work with for years. We are grateful for their donation making our International Project a success. Our club will be delivering a truckload of wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, canes, masks, etc. next week to complete the project.

I could not be more pleased than I am with the responses from Drs. Uro and Jacobs. I have never met Dr. Uro, but I’ll posit the two of us would get along famously. Dr. Jacobs was one of my trainers when I was a resident and we have been good friends from the first day. When I taught in Des Moines, he graciously took all levels of students, inspiring all of them to become excellent clinicians. When I had to make podiatric relevant decisions, I always thought WWJD, but refused to wear a bracelet advertising such.
I applaud Dr. Uro for having the courage to say he would not recommend podiatry to a college student today, in spite of the fact he loved the profession for 45 years. This begs the question why he would not recommend something he thinks was so...
