AT THE COLLEGES |
Canadian Students Complete NYCPM Rotation
Three senior students from the Université du Québec à Trois Rivières (UQTR) spent eight (elective) weeks at NYCPM this winter, focusing on podiatric imaging, podopediatrics, and podiatric medicine and surgery. We are expecting more students this summer. The three students who finished their rotation at NYCPM will next have relatively brief externships, receive their DPM degrees from UQTR, and will go on to private practice in the province of Québec.

Jean-Phillipe R. Chamberland; Marie-Claude Racine, and Joanie Vermeersch received certificates at a luncheon in their honor in late February. All three students remarked on the relatively warm weather here in New York, compared to their snowbound home!

MA Podiatrist Discusses Edema of the Feet
Mild swelling is usually nothing to worry about but in other cases, you should avoid making your own diagnosis, advises James Ioli, DPM of Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women's Hospital.
|
Dr. James Ioli |
"Report your symptoms to your doctor if there's so much swelling that it leaves an indentation if you press your finger into it, or if it has developed suddenly, lasts for more than a few days, affects just one foot, or is accompanied by pain or discoloration of the skin," Dr. Ioli said.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
4 Steps to a Successful Post-Merger Integration Process - Part 2B
In order to be successful, a merger must be followed up with a detailed course of action. Here are several specific places where physician groups routinely stub their toes when merging. But, if you get them right, your success rate will soar.
2B. Patients- Be proactive and convincing. Take the show on the road. All physicians must actively outreach and proactively engage referring physicians. Keep them in the loop with frequent communication. Walk them through what you are doing, if and how it will benefit them, and state clearly how they can get in contact with any questions or concerns throughout the process. In addition, provide physician liaisons clear language about what they can (and cannot) say to referring physician practices. Keep referring physicians informed and make sure to spend time listening to their concerns. This might even be a good time to probe what they like and don’t like about your existing relationship or services you offer. If there is a weakness in their mind, it’s better to open that door proactively with an eye toward solving it in the integration/transition process than let a competitor open the door with an eye toward leveraging it.

CODINGLINE CORNER |
Query: Modifiers -XS vs. -59
We have started using the -XS modifier for routine foot care on our Medicare and Railroad Medicare claims. What percentage of claims should receive the -XS modifier versus the -59 modifier? Is there a standard for the amount of -XS vs -59?
Gary Raymond, DPM, Altoona, PA
Response: There is an excellent article from Medicare from back in 2015 summarizing and giving examples on how and when to use these modifiers:
Currently, there is not a specific policy on using just the “X” modifiers versus the -59 modifier. Therefore, I believe you can use them interchangeably at this time.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) |
From: Itamar Rosenbaum, CPed, Paul Kesselman, DPM
We have developed a special line of custom shoes that are geared towards critical care and are capable of accommodating the most sensitive feet. We have been working with limb salvage physicians for several years and have had tremendous success with this modality.
Itamar Rosenbaum, CPed, Rosenbaum’s Foot Health & Comfort Center
I have used Hersco in LIC, NY for more than twenty years for patients with severe Charcot foot deformities. They also manufacture custom foot orthotics and AFOs. They are reasonably priced and their management and customer service team are superb. Mr. Kennedy is a CPed and has had many articles appearing in several publications on a regular basis. I would definitely reach out to Mr. Kennedy and review the case prior to submitting an order.
Some simple tips from thirty five+ years of ordering custom shoes for patients: Be sure to take a good plaster cast with the patient in a...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) |
From: Lancing Malusky, DPM, Joseph Borreggine, DPM
I watched the first one hour episode of A&E's the Toe Bro. He is a Canadian foot doctor. It is a well done filming or your typical dramatized reality medicine treatment, and so far accurate in-office routine and surgical nail care. Two problems though. 1. The show is filmed in Canada and calls him a chiropodist and 2. He has apparently not been introduced to ethyl chloride for injection pre-anesthesia. It is worth a look.
Lancing Malusky, DPM, Dayton, OH
I guess this new reality show on “A&E” which premiered on March 5th is about a very popular Canadian chiropodist, Jonathan Tomines, who claims he is not a podiatrist (since he doesn’t do surgery on bone). This new show has been all the rave on social media.
This show may be the blessing in disguise that this profession may need to actually provide the best PR to anyone who didn’t know who or what a podiatrist (chiropodist) is or does. Because they thought they...
