CA Podiatrist Runs Largest Black-owned Farm in the Country
Upon Exiting the 14 Freeway lies Bloom Ranch, a 250-acre expanse that became the largest Black-owned farm in the country when Bill Releford, DPM purchased it in 2023. Dr. Releford, a podiatric surgeon, singer, and author is committed to re-connecting to the land and food. He often relects on whether his ancestors would be proud.

Dr. Bill Releford |
Dr. Releford also runs the Food Is Medicine program, a collaboration with UCLA and Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, which produces specialized produce boxes targeted to specific clinical needs, For example, a "stone box" for urology patients is packed with vegetables to prevent kidney stones.

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Stop Following the Herd: 5 Counterintuitive Habits of Winning Practices
Winning medical practices don't follow trends; they make bold strategic choices. These counterintuitive habits set market leaders apart.
Step 2. Question the validity
Take a look at each strategic move in isolation, and ask yourself, “Could we do the exact opposite, and would that also be a valid strategy?” If doing the opposite of your stated strategic move would be stupid or nonsensical, then it is not really a strategic move at all. It is simply a table stakes requirement for doing business in your specialty. It is likely to be something that many of your competitors will also be doing.
Your strategic move should be something that will help you to establish a competitive advantage. A strategic move should help you to create a category or a niche in your catchment area (and perhaps more broadly in your specialty) where you can genuinely claim a position of leadership or a meaningful point of difference. A strategic move should make it very clear what you are going to say “YES” to, and by association what you are saying “NO” to, and what you are NOT going to do.

| FINANCIAL TIP OF THE DAY | |
5 Retirement Tax Traps to Watch in 2026
Even in retirement, some income sources can unexpectedly raise your federal and state tax bills. Here's how to avoid costly surprises.
1. Required minimum distributions (RMDs)
Starting at age 73, retirees must take required minimum distributions (RMDs) from traditional IRAs and 401(k)s. Missing an RMD or withdrawing the wrong amount can trigger a penalty of up to 25%.
RMD key points:
-
RMDs are calculated based on your account balance and IRS life expectancy tables.
-
Each account has its own RMD, so multiple accounts require separate calculations.
-
Even small miscalculations can cost thousands of dollars.
Tax tip. Plan withdrawals strategically. Splitting RMDs across multiple accounts or timing them in lower-income years can help manage your tax burden. Always correct any missed RMDs promptly to minimize IRS penalties.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS) | |
From: Rich Hofacker, DPM
I found the results of the previous PM News Quick Poll quite telling. Although, all four issues (Government regulations, pay parity, competition, and student enrollment) are extremely important to our profession, I found it interesting that only 28% of the responders felt that the student enrollment crisis was of the utmost importance.
Colleagues, if there is not an immediate major effort to attract more, good, quality students into our podiatry colleges, I might suggest to you that the other three issues (Government regulations, pay parity, and competition) will not longer be of concern.
Rich Hofacker, DPM, Akron, OH

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL-LEGAL) | |
From: Jay Grife, DPM, Esq
Insurers require higher than normal malpractice limits simply because if there’s a lawsuit, they don’t want it coming back on them and they just assume that the underlying doctor will have a sufficient coverage that they won’t have to worry. It’s simply an economic decision. This is somewhat counterintuitive to my findings over practicing law for 30 years and podiatry for 25 years in that lower malpractice liability coverage often will abate a potential malpractice suit because there is minimal economic recovery potential.
I have seen this exact same scenario where general surgeons in a huge physician group all decided to lower their coverage to 250,000 and by doing that, it reduced the number of claims that were filed against the doctors. I think you have to weigh the economics of being on the Insurance Company panel versus the additional premium costs of the higher insurance and make a studied decision.
Jay Grife, DPM, Esq, (Retired) Jacksonville, FL

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1 | |
RE: The Passing of Neal Kruman, DPM
I would like to report to PM News the loss of Dr. Neal Kruman, a 1966 graduate of the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine and a past resident at Civic Hospital, which was one of the first podiatry hospitals in Detroit, Michigan to have a surgical residency program. Neal was quite active in the Michigan area for many years. He was my roommate for our freshman and sophomore years at Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine and needless to say will be greatly missed.
|
|
Dr. Neal Kruman |
I want to extend my deepest sympathy to his wife Shirley and family and to state he was a great friend and colleague and will be missed by many of his classmates. May he rest in peace.
Steven J Berlin, DPM

|
| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 2 | |
When you achieve life to age 99, you must not only be lucky but perhaps you did good things during your professional life. Carlos was very active in advancing the podiatric profession not only in North Carolina but also with the APMA in the earlier days. I personally had the opportunity to work with him when I was President of the Maryland Podiatric Medical Association in the 1970-'80s. He will be greatly missed in this profession. May he rest in peace.
Steven J Berlin, DPM
