Dehydration is Most Common Cause of Toe Cramps: TX Podiatrist
According to podiatrist Chanel Perkins, DPM, an assistant professor at The University of Texas Medical Branch, what’s happening in the body when someone gets a toe cramp depends on the exact cause. That’s why it’s so important to determine the root issue. One super common reason for toe cramps according to Dr. Perkins is dehydration. Simply put, not drinking enough water prevents muscles from functioning properly. Dehydration can cause muscles to malfunction, resulting in spasms. The fix here is pretty straightforward. “Staying hydrated helps prevent dehydration and will keep electrolytes balanced and maintain water content in your muscles,” Dr. Perkins says.

But she adds that overhydration or certain medical conditions can also lead to an electrolyte imbalance, which can also result in toe cramps. A good water goal to aim for is eight, 8-ounce glasses of water today, increasing the amount the more active you are.

5 Mistakes to Avoid When Texting Patients
Some of the highest-quality healthcare strategies nowadays include remote components and patients are increasingly wanting to communicate with their providers via text messages. While texting can make things a lot easier (and more profitable), it can also be easy to unknowingly violate HIPAA regulations. Be sure to not make these five common mistakes.
5. Sending messages to the wrong contact - It can be easy to accidentally send messages to the wrong person when you are using a personal mobile device or even a secure platform, especially when you are in a rush. Secure system or not, this is never acceptable. By the same token, you wouldn’t want to send an email to the wrong person or leave a voicemail on the wrong line. This can result in unauthorized disclosure of PHI to the wrong people, violating HIPAA compliance.
To avoid these mishaps, it boils down to ensuring that your staff knows what they’re doing, and that you also have appropriate checks and balances in place. It’s imperative for them to exchange information with the correct person. Otherwise, you may be putting your patients and your practice at risk. Confirm patient contact info every time they come into your office so that you always have their updated information. This way, you aren’t sending private information to the wrong person.

Query: Aetna Medicare Challenges
As of 2022, we have had a problem with Aetna Medicare denying CPT 11055–11057. Is anyone else having this problem? We have several claims that have been denied under the LCD; however, the same codes were billed exactly the same way last year for the same patients and Aetna Medicare paid. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
John W. Lane, DPM, Maumee, OH
Response: MAPs (Medicare Advantage Plans) are required by CMS to cover the same items Medicare does, just not necessarily pay the same. That said, they should be covering this assuming the proper class findings are documented. I assume this is an Aetna problem and not a practice problem having the same coding on board. The location of the lesion could be a factor as well if billing for these codes and the nail care codes as distal lesions have been lumped in with nail debridements. I would appeal, speak with a provider rep, and if need be, ask for a peer-to-peer review.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRISTS AND THE CORONA VIRUS PANDEMIC) | |
From: Michael Lawrence, DPM
I wanted to respond to comments made about the COVID-19 death of Dennis Bizzoco, DPM. It was certainly unfortunate, but Dr. Bizzoco was anti-mask and published in local media reasons for not wearing a mask which frankly were not at all accurate. From very good sources, he was also against vaccinations and readily advocated against them. These positions may very well have cost him the ultimate price. Hopefully, they didn't cost others.
