PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY - PART 1
Rewards of Being a Doctor More than Just Money: OH Podiatrist

Healthcare professionals in a variety of specialties spoke to students of 7 to 15 years of schooling post-high school to achieve the status they have reached, following a huge commitment of time and, of course, money to complete their education. But, pointed out Dennis Davis, medical director of Cleveland Clinic Wooster, “You’re investing in yourself; you’re investing in your career.”

Dr. Matthew Testrake

“It’s a full variety of things,” affirmed Matthew Testrake, DPM, a doctor specializing in podiatry, adding, “We all work together to get you better.” For a woman who was having trouble walking because of a problem with her foot, the ability to work again comfortably resulted in health and gratitude. On a return appointment, she made cookies for the staff of the entire department. “That tells me we’re doing something special here,” Dr. Testrake said.

PA Podiatrist's Jail Term Increases after Parole Violation

A State College, Pennsylvania podiatrist who pleaded guilty to several driving under the influences charges in Centre County was back in Clearfield County Court Monday. Sharon Pletcher was on probation in Clearfield County for assaulting a police officer in June 2016 at Penn Highlands Clearfield. Since that time she has been charged twice with DUI in Centre County. Monday she was in Clearfield County Court to answer for violating her probation. Judge Fredric Ammerman sentenced her to six months to one year in jail and one year consecutive probation.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY

How Can Other Practices Improve Your Online Reputation? - Part 4

Today, online reputation management is crucial for the survival and growth of any practice. The ever-growing competition is making it tough for practices to outshine others. So, instead of getting worried about what others are doing, it’s time to learn from them and improve yourself. Let’s see how your competitors can benefit you by improving your online reputation.

4.  Interaction with patients

To manage your online reputation, you also need to learn how and when to interact with your customers. Responding to online reviews is one element. You should know how to deal with negative reviews without taking them personally and welcome the scope of improvement.

Social media platforms, mailers, seminars, etc. are other interaction spots. You need to keep a close check on your competitors’ initiatives of interaction. You can send interactive mailers or conduct surveys to get your patients comfortable with you. Whenever your patients make a physical visit to your practice, ask them about the mode of communication they prefer and if they have anything to share about your practice or their experience.

CODINGLINE CORNER
Query: Orthotist Hiring

Our practice recently hired a certified orthotist which has greatly benefited our patients. Is the orthotist allowed to bill an E/M CPT for his services under the attending physician‘s name? There is a physician present while he’s there but doesn’t always stop in to see the patient.

Bruce Kaczander, DPM, Southfield, MI

Response: Sorry, but the orthotists fee for the orthotic and prostheses includes the E/M code. Medicare does not allow CPOs, COs, or CPeds to bill E/M codes. This is often why non- Medicare carriers pay a higher fee for the non-physician providers.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
RE: Let’s Make Podiatric Medical Research a Priority
From: Leonard A. Levy, DPM, MPH

With interest, I have participated in and have been watching the discussion on research in podiatric medicine hosted by PM News over the past week. For the past 18 years, I was Associate Dean for Research and Innovation at the Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine of Nova Southeastern University and am now Professor Emeritus. However, I continue to provide instruction in the development of research protocols including grant proposals at the institution. As a result, students and faculty have been given basic guidance, instruction, and provided with motivation to develop skills and a motivation for research activities.

While I personally had written many successful proposals leading to at least $26 million in grants, I also was able to identify and implement programs funded by smaller grants/endowments that resulted in competitions for students and faculty, leading to an appetite to seek funding and write research papers. We desperately need to engage in similar projects in podiatric medicine. Unfortunately, our college and residency faculty as well as students seem to be intimidated by this process. It is time for a major expansion of the process that cultivates a strong research environment in the profession, sharing our contributions with the professional and lay public. I am strongly convinced that we can do this.

YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP

RE: Outrageous Video Game of the Day

Doctor Foots is an exciting game about a hospital in which everything is next to real: a line of sick persons at the doctor's office, medical manipulations and instruments, blood, tears, and always grateful patients. We're healing people (their feet) according to a realistic protocol, following all the procedural steps and rules. Here are the main advantages and features of the doctors game for kids.

Doctor Foots - Early training for future podiatrists?

The medical treatment game gets children acquainted with the profession of a foot doctor and his/her hard work - surgery. The doctor games train memory and attention, develop fine motor skills and empathy, intellect, intelligence, curiosity, and perseverance in achieving the goals.
