Lifestyle Changes Help Keep Foot Pain at Bay: PA Podiatrist
Supportive shoes and lifestyle changes, such as maintaining a healthy weight, are the best bets for keeping foot pain at bay, said Richard K. Rettig, DPM, chief of the division of podiatry at Einstein Healthcare. Sneakers are always a good choice, but if you insist on slippers or sandals at home, choose a pair with arch support.
|
|
Dr. Richard Rettig |
“If someone can change their lifestyle — lose the weight, not go barefoot, not wear sandals,” they may be able to live foot-pain-free for years, said Dr. Rettig who has not seen an increase in foot pain patients during the pandemic. Most people, however, don’t change their habits and return for treatment when the pain flares up again, he said.

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
5 Mistakes to Avoid When Texting Patients
Some of the highest-quality healthcare strategies nowadays include remote components and patients are increasingly wanting to communicate with their providers via text messages. While texting can make things a lot easier (and more profitable), it can also be easy to unknowingly violate HIPAA regulations. Be sure to not make these five common mistakes.
4. Giving the wrong employees access - Even a secure system can grant access to the wrong people. Make sure you are only granting access to authorized employees! The “wrong employees” in this situation could be someone working in a different department or under a different provider. For example, Employee X may be working in collections and doesn’t need to see the conversations Patient A had with the Provider about their patient care. Employee X just needs to text about collections.
Part of having a secure system is making sure users have the right permissions and access. It’s important to make sure that the appropriate personnel in your practice have access to those patient conversations. Ensure that only authorized employees are communicating with patients. By assigning different phone numbers and different dashboards to each authorized employee, you can more confidently assume that patient communication will be secure.

| CODINGLINE CORNER |
Query: Modifier -25 With X-rays
I received a letter from UnitedHealthCare with educational material stating that I may be using modifier -25 incorrectly when billing an E/M code (CPT 99213) with diagnostic x-rays (CPT 73630). I have asked several colleagues, as well as a biller/coder friend, and unfortunately received different answers. Does an E/M code require a -25 modifier when billed with x-rays on the same day of service?
Todd Lamster, DPM, Scottsdale, AZ
Response: The short answer is no!
The -25 modifier is mainly used as amended to an E/M service, so as to designate that the E/M was a separate and distinctive service from a surgical procedure (0 or 10-day global) performed on the same DOS. There is no need to amend an E/M with a -25 modifier when an x-ray was performed, even if the x-rays were performed for a different diagnosis than attached to the E/M.
If a surgical service with a 90-day global was performed on the same date of service as the E/M and the determination for performing the surgery was made based on that E/M, then one would attach the -57 modifier to the E/M, not the -25 modifier. The APMA Coding Resource Center and CPT texts have all the rules regarding the appropriate use of CPT modifiers.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY) | |
From: W. David Herbert DPM, JD
I read about Dr. Tram and his investing priorities. I agree that real estate can be a very good investment. My wife and I have owned about 25 properties, many of them were rental properties. I have owned rental properties in 4 different states. The trick is to own the right rental property in the right state. For example, California is not a good state to be a landlord in.
I believe Wyoming is one of the best states to be a landlord in, even much better than Montana. When investing, do your due diligence, preferably consult a real estate lawyer. Always try to own the property without any liens or mortgages on it!

I know that this article came from the Utah Statesman, but just for clarification, UT (University of Texas) is better known as the "Longhorns", Texas A&M are the Aggies. UT and Texas A&M are rival schools.
