Diabetics Need to be Examined at Least Twice a Year: MN Podiatrist
According to Stephanie Kvas, DPM, a podiatrist in New Prague and Waseca, Minnesota, "If you're among the millions of people in the U.S. diagnosed with diabetes, you've probably learned about the importance of managing your medications, adapting your diet, and incorporating activity into your lifestyle. But what do you know about foot care? One of the complications of diabetes is restricted blood flow to the legs and feet. That's why it's important to have a podiatrist on your care team."

"Working closely with your podiatrist can reduce the risk of developing foot and ankle issues, such as neuropathic ulcers, infections, nerve and bone damage, and even amputations. You should see your podiatrist every six months, or as needed, if you've been diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy or have a personal history of a diabetes-related complication. If you don't have any diabetes-related foot and ankle complications, it's still recommended that you see your podiatrist every year," says Dr. Kvas.

TX Podiatrist Changes Strategy in Competitive Sellers’ Market
Unfortunately for buyers, it’s still a competitive sellers’ market. Buyers often have to pay above the asking price to secure a sale. But more money isn’t the only way forward for take-two buyers. Dallas podiatrist Nam Tram, DPM, for example, is switching up the type of property he’s looking for this time.

“Initially, we were looking at single-family homes,” Dr. Tram says. “We’ve opened up our search to also include multifamily properties.” Tram hopes the switch — as well as changing agents — will make the difference. He plans to rent out any extra units to subsidize the higher mortgage payments.

UT Basketball Star Aspires to be Podiatrist
Five years ago, 20-year-old Justin Bean joined Utah State basketball as a preferred walk-on. Four years later, Justin is a star for the Aggies, racking up double-doubles and pulling in name, image and likeness deals from around the state. He’s currently the seventh leading scorer and top rebounder in the conference, and a fan favorite. It has no doubt been a successful season — and career — for the 6-foot-7-inch forward from Moore, Oklahoma.

MIFAS Holds Cadaver Seminar
The Academy of Minimally Invasive Foot and Ankle Surgery (MIFAS) Cadaver Seminar was held in Orlando, Florida on February 24-26th. Over 85 doctors, exhibitors, and world renowned faculty from across the globe participated. Hands-on techniques were demonstrated and mastered. Many doctors were new to the skill set, while others seasoned with years of experience shared pearls of wisdom and technique. Practical examinations provided the opportunity for many to excel through both Academy Fellowship and ABMSP Board Certification.

Among the field of national and international experts were Dr. Carmen Naranjo Ruiz who lectured from Spain about hammertoe correction, and orthopedic surgeon from Mexico City, Dr. Fernando Sancho Barroso who offered insights on hallux varus correction. Borys Markewych, DPM was spotlighted to share his recently published osteotomy for posterior calcaneal exostosis relief. Michael Warshaw, DPM, coding/billing expert, and Larry Kobak DPM, JD rounded out the field to provide legal recommendations for charting. The Academy’s next seminar is scheduled for June in New Orleans.

Urgent Need for Additional Podiatry Services for Diabetics: Ireland
Deputy Michael Lowry is highlighting the urgent need for podiatry services in Tipperary and across the country to both help diabetic patients and also reduce the need for hospitaliation. The Health and Safety Executive recently launched a Model of Care for the Diabetic Foot and highlighted its intention to increase the number of podiatrists via the planned HSE Chronic Disease Management Community Hubs. However, there seems to be a significant delay in the recruitment process. A person with diabetes is 22 times more likely to undergo a non-traumatic lower limb amputation than an individual without diabetes. In 2020, people with diabetes accounted for 69% of people requiring lower limb amputation across the country.
In Tipperary, between 2016 and 2020, a total of 113 diabetic patients underwent lower limb amputation. During that same period, a total of 363 cases of diabetic-related foot ulcers were diagnosed with the patients requiring hospitalization. "An increase in the number of acute and community-based podiatrists could help diabetic patients and reduce the need for hospitalization," says Deputy Lowry.

5 Mistakes to Avoid When Texting Patients
Some of the highest-quality healthcare strategies nowadays include remote components and patients are increasingly wanting to communicate with their providers via text messages. While texting can make things a lot easier (and more profitable), it can also be easy to unknowingly violate HIPAA regulations. Be sure to not make these five common mistakes.
3. Sharing PHI without permission - Patients want to be able to ask you questions and hold conversations through text, but you need to always make sure that they are confirmed and opted into sharing PHI via text. Some patients will want to text with you just for scheduling and reminders, while others will want to text with you throughout their care (and after). PHI is sacred, so be sure to ask patients if they’re okay with texting you about their care.
How do you make sure this happens? You can start by adding it as a question on patient paperwork. For example: “Would you like us to text you about your care?” As long as patients have opted in to receiving texts about care related to PHI, you're good to go.

Unfortunately, the mask mandate for healthcare settings may be permanently in place. Bureaucrats will never relax a regulation unless the risk of doing so is zero AND they have tremendous pressure to do so. They can’t lose their job if they overreact to a threat. Take masking in schools, for example. The U.S. is an outlier in the world community. No European nation has required children to mask for quite some time now, because they listen to actual science, not the ‘‘science” so many public officials here in United States claim to follow.
My guess is even if COVID fades to obscurity, there will be new mandates to “keep us safe” from the flu, colds, etc.
