NC Podiatrist Retires From Painting Art for Runners

This year will mark the 14th year that Matt Thompson, DPM has painted the signature watercolor artwork for the Rumba on the Lumber, which ends its three-day run today. And it will be the last. Since 2005, the 61-year-old podiatrist’s art has been featured on shirts, fliers, and websites for the three-day festival hosted by the Robeson Road Runners. His paintings also have been used on the runners bib worn during the race.

Dr. Matthew Thompson

Thompson is stepping back from the festival to spend more time with his family. “I’m planning on retiring,” Thompson said. “We have a grandson in Colorado, and we spend much more time out there.” The longtime Lumberton resident has been a podiatrist for 36 years. “Matt has been a terrific volunteer for the Robeson Road Runners and he’s a terrific artist,” Jef Lambdin, Rumba on the Lumber coordinator, said. “We are going to be sad.”

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY

How Can Other Practices Improve Your Online Reputation? - Part 2

Today, online reputation management is crucial for the survival and growth of any practice. The ever-growing competition is making it tough for practices to outshine others. So, instead of getting worried about what others are doing, it’s time to learn from them and improve yourself. Let’s see how your competitors can benefit you by improving your online reputation.

2.  Unique content

In addition to a good-looking website, you need to have educational and easy-to-understand content. Content includes information such as office details, your bio, specialty, and services that put the patient at ease and understand your practice in a better way.

In addition to informative content, it is necessary that you have good SEO. If your competitor outranks your website, you are likely lacking good SEO strategies and quality content. Check your competitors’ websites content and implement new ideas in your web content. Always remember your content should be unique, informative, and original.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1
From: Connie Lee Bills, DPM

Yes! We have the same problem in Michigan. I am not a Medicaid provider, so I face “eating” the deductible and being paid $0 for services. I am contemplating not seeing any Medicare patient that is categorized “QMB”. These are the only ones you can’t see the deductible for.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2
From: Kathleen Neuhoff, DPM

I am a veterinarian as well as a podiatrist. As a requirement for achieving board certification, it was necessary to submit two papers suitable for inclusion in a peer reviewed journal in addition to the usual case presentations and two days of testing. One of the reasons this was done many years ago was because the feeling in veterinary medicine is that one of the main differentiating factors between a profession and a trade is the production and publishing of research. If such a requirement became a part of the board certification requirements for podiatry, I am sure we would see a rapid expansion of research!

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES)
From: James Koon, DPM

It is not infrequent anymore to read articles that show higher and higher rates of physician burnout. The thing is this: no one cares. Joe Q Public could not (and does not) concern themselves with your emotions one bit. In their minds, you are still a rich doctor who only cares about making money. Certainly, there is a microcosm of patients that care about you but be assured, 99% couldn’t give a flip about us.

I’ve been practicing for twenty years. The first 18 were in a private practice and the last two in a multi-specialty clinic. There are pros and cons to both, but I must admit that being in a multi- specialty clinic has far more pros than cons. My 80-hour work week is now a 50-hour week. The money is...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP)
From: Paul Busman, DPM, RN

I think Michael Carbonaro needs to be assessed for diabetic neuropathy laugh. That reminds me of something that happened to me many years ago. I had an ongoing summer job starting in high school, right through podiatry school, working for a roofing and aluminum siding company. One day, I was walking through our warehouse when I felt a sharp pain on the sole of my foot. When I looked, I found a roofing nail stuck in the sole. With the large flat head of a roofing nail, it had stood upright on the floor. I tried to take my boot off to check my foot but couldn't do it. I had nailed my boot to my foot! Luckily, I had my claw hammer handy and could extract the nail. I put a Band-Aid on it and went back to work.
