FL Podiatrist Shares 3 Things That Make Best Running Shoe
Jacksonville podiatrist Candice Kennedy, DPM said three ingredients make up the best running shoe for you. First, make sure the shoe is not too loose. That could cause you to roll your ankle.
|
|
Dr. Candice Kennedy |
Second, make sure the shoe provides good heel support. The heel counter needs to be thick and rigid to cradle the heel. Third, pay attention to where the shoe bends. "The shoes should bend in the toebox. If it flexes in the midfoot, it means the shoe is too flexible and could cause injuries," says Dr. Kennedy.

Podiatry Revolutionizing Foot Health in Mauritius
In the heart of Mauritius, a groundbreaking venture is changing lives by addressing a crucial, often overlooked aspect of healthcare. Zahra Chouthy, a skilled podiatry graduate, together with her husband Usama Anwar, has inaugurated Podiatry For All, a clinic poised to tackle the pressing needs of lower limb health in Curepipe. This innovative clinic not only offers podiatric services but also integrates physiotherapy and general practitioner services, creating a comprehensive care model for the community.

Zahra's daily encounters with patients underscore the dire need for specialized foot care in the region. Mauritius, an island nation, faces about 500 preventable amputations annually, a staggering number that Podiatry For All aims to reduce through its services.

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
8 Billing Tips for Practices
The implementation of these billing tips can be a transformative step towards improving the financial health of your primary care practice.
7. Medicare billing compliance
Follow the guidelines set by Medicare's Local Coverage Determinations (LCDs) when billing for services. Noncompliance could lead to denied claims and financial penalties. Make sure you know what kind of Medicare provider you are: par, non-par or non-participating. If you are a Medicare provider, make sure that you know and have access to your provider transaction number (PTAN). It is notoriously difficult to get through to Medicare without your PTAN and it is equally difficult trying to determine your number if you did not make note of it when you received your Medicare welcome letter.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM PODIATRY HALL OF FAME) | |
From: Steven Kravitz, DPM
Congratulations to Tracey Vlahovic, DPM and Steve McClain, MD for being elected to the PM Podiatry Hall of Fame by the readers of Podiatry Management magazine. This is indeed a great honor from our peers and as such represents a very esteemed recognition that a very few can obtain. They both deserve it. They spent countless hours educating thousands of practicing practitioners in their respective specialties. Congratulations to both recipients. You both worked for it and you deserve it.
Steven Kravitz, DPM, Winston-Salem,NC

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC PODCASTS) | |
From: John Throckmorton, DPM
It was great finally seeing acknowledgement and attention given to the Blake inverted orthotic. As a biomechanical podiatrist (old school), I’ve used these orthotics multiple times to avoid surgery and keep my patients walking great. I find it funny that at podiatry meetings, if I mention the Blake inverted orthotic to younger podiatrists (under age 40), they answer, “Huh?”
Three-year residencies are the best in our profession and a one-year fellowship added is great, but learning biomechanics of the lower extremity and foot is what makes our profession better than orthopedics when it comes to keeping humans walking and running.
John Throckmorton, DPM, Moorseville, NC

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1A | |
From: Robert Scott Steinberg, DPM
"A significant portion of the older podiatric profession are the notional progeny of chiropodists. For many of us, the first exposure to our future profession was afforded by individuals with the letters DSC behind their names." - Tomczak
I highly doubt your statement to be true. Where did you get your statistics? I do not believe there are many 80+ year-old practicing DPMs in any leadership roles in their state or the APMA. If there were, things would not be so messed up!
Robert Scott Steinberg, DPM, Schaumburg, IL

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1B | |
From: Michael Uro, DPM
I just read Dr. Rod Tomczak’s response to “A Short History of Podiatric Discontent and Frustration”. I whole-heartedly agree with all he had to say. I have enjoyed practicing podiatry for 45 years. I was fortunate enough to have enjoyed the era before managed care...a time when we were paid 2/3s more for surgery than we are today. The reimbursements for surgery today are an insult to the training, experience, and risks that podiatric surgeons take every time they walk into an operating room.
When I came to Sacramento, I was welcomed by the podiatric, MD, and DO communities. I am grateful to those mentors such as Mitch Mosher, DPM, Larry Gerelli, DPM, Randy Sarte, DPM, and...
Editor's note: Dr. Uro's extended-length letter can be read here.

RE: Medical Advantage Update
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM
In a recent issue of Becker's ASC Review, 5 more newsworthy stories regarding Medicare "Advantage" Plans appeared. This includes issues regarding delayed access to care (22% for MA vs 13%) for traditional Fee for Service Medicare, fines due to delays in providing mail order medications, one healthcare system dropping Humana and Aetna, another suing Humana, and lastly, a JAMA study showing that MA enrollees receiving less intensive post-acute care as compared to beneficiaries in traditional Fee for Service Medicare.
