NYCPM Students Conduct Foot Screenings for Homeless New Yorkers
New York College of Podiatric Medicine at Touro University (NYCPM) participated recently in the Salvation Army's (SA) Don't Walk By annual event in which the SA opens up their doors for a day inviting in homeless New Yorkers to provide them with a hot meal, access to an array of NYC and NY state's array of safety net services as well as various health screenings. NYCPM had five screening stations set up for the duration of the event. Joann Li, DPM and Dan Kline, MSPH/MBA, NYCPM Faculty members provided oversight to nine students. Stan Chen, DPM, NYCPM Alum also participated in the event, helping to provide clinical oversight.

(L-R) Sara Basser, Arisha Leekha, Dan Kline, Dr. Joann Li, Daniel Kramer, Chris Richter, Akshdeep Singh, and Abigail Shafer. |
"This annual event provides a unique opportunity for our students to demonstrate their empathy and communication skills, seeing first-hand how NYC's most vulnerable can benefit from podiatric care," said Dr. Li. NYCPM third-year students are required to participate in at least one health screening coordinated through the Department of Community Medicine.

IL Podiatrist Provides a Six-Step Plan to Treat Onychomycosis
According to John M. Sigle, DPM, “Achieving clear nails requires a multi-faceted, customized approach.” If you want healthy nails by summer, here is the proven six-step plan that offers effective results: 1) Get an accurate diagnosis 2) Prepare the nails for treatment 3) Use laser therapy 4) Restore nails with Keryflex 5) Use science-based topicals and 6) Sanitize footwear.
|
|
Dr. John Sigle |
"Managing toenail fungus is a marathon, not a sprint. Success depends on a correct diagnosis and a multi-faceted, customized approach using the best products, medications, and state-of-the-art technology to combat the condition. While laser treatments are often an out-of-pocket expense, some insurance carriers are beginning to provide coverage. Now is the ideal time to start treatment so your feet are healthy and ready for sandal season," says Dr. Sigle.

OH Podiatrist Appointed to Several Positions at University of Jamestown
Amy Jo Marcano-Reik, DPM, PhD, a podiatric physician-surgeon-scientist based out of Northeast Ohio, has recently been appointed as Associate Professor in the Clinical Research PhD Program and Founding Director of the Master of Science (MS) in Medical Sciences and MS in Computational Pathology and Digital Medicine Programs at the University of Jamestown in North Dakota. Both MS programs – which are fully remote and asynchronous – prepare graduates for “next steps” in their academic journey (i.e., DPM, MD/DO, PhD programs) or immediate transition into advanced healthcare and digital medicine careers.

Dr. Amy Marcano-Reik |
Dr. Marcano-Reik recently participated in the Inaugural Clinical Research Symposium and celebrated the opening and ribbon-cutting of the new University of Jamestown Health Sciences and Innovation Campus in Phoenix, Arizona (which also houses the MHS in Pathologists’ Assistant program, among other medical science programs).

Stop Following the Herd: 5 Counterintuitive Habits of Winning Practices
Winning medical practices don't follow trends; they make bold strategic choices. These counterintuitive habits set market leaders apart.
4. Stop constantly reorganizing
I’ve seen many practices try to re-strategize by constantly reworking their organization chart and rethinking incentives. This very rarely (if ever) is a viable solution. Successful practices resist disruptive reorganizations and instead put their core values and culture to work. They use culture, not structure, to drive change.

How to Minimize the Risk of an IRS Audit
A number of tax audits result from preventable mistakes. Here are the five most common audit red flags—and what to do to avoid them.
5. Undervalued assets
Estate tax returns tend to be audited at a fairly high rate. The biggest reason? Undervalued assets. The IRS has seasoned valuation experts, and if they think the estate has valued its assets too low, an audit could be just around the corner.
What to do
When valuing assets with no public market price—such as real estate, art, or a closely held business—executors of large estates should average the estimates from two or three qualified appraisers. Should the valuations come into question, having multiple appraisals can help substantiate your position.

Time Management
Here are some valuable tips that have aided Savannah Santiago, DPM in navigating her experiences as a student and a resident:
3. Keep a Clean Space
This isn’t exactly a groundbreaking revelation — Harvard Business Review even published an article about how our physical environment can impact our mental performance. Cluttered spaces are linked to higher stress levels, increased anxiety, reduced focus, poorer eating choices, and even worse sleep. (Though, to be fair, residency has taught me how to sleep soundly through just about anything—including laundry mountains and a sink full of dirty coffee mugs.)

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS) | |
From Gary S Smith, DPM
Around 1996, Medicare cut by 50% how much they pay for many procedures like nail avulsions. They had a cost-of-living increase built in every year. That all stopped and we haven't gotten an appreciable raise since. At the same time, commercial insurances cut how much they pay for procedures by 75% and have not raised how much they pay since. That is the biggest challenge facing podiatry. That is why nobody wants to do what we do. You have to be an MD or DO to make money as an employee in healthcare.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (IN THE COURTS) | |
From: Lawrence J. Kansky, DPM, Esq
Congratulations to Dr. Strash and Dr. Leonard for surviving false allegations and false charges by the FBI and the DOJ.
In 2007, I was investigated by the DEA and State of PA. This resulted in false criminal charges being alleged against me, which devastated me. While I did not receive much support from the podiatric community except from Thomas P. Jiunta, DPM, I did receive great support from the MD surgical community, including from my orthopedic surgeon friend.
My family provided tremendous support, as did the judge who charged me. This judge called me the day after he charged me in his courtroom, and told me, “Don’t quit, I know who the bad doctors are in Luzerne County, and you are not one of them.” I asked this judge why he cared so much about me and his reply was, “Because...
