PM PODIATRY HALL OF FAME |
Kesselman, Rogers, Root Inducted into the PM Podiatry Hall of Fame
Podiatry Management Magazine has announced that Paul Kesselman, DPM, Lee C. Rogers, DPM, and Jeff Root have been elected to receive the 2025 PM Lifetime Achievement Awards. Drs. Kesselman and Rogers are the 42nd and 43rd podiatrists to receive this honor. It marks the first time that two individuals tied for the most votes by PM readers. Dr. Kesselman is a distinguished author, lecturer, and DME authority and a regular columnist for PM.
|
(L-R) Drs. Paul Kesselman and Lee Rogers; Jeff Root |
Dr. Rogers has established himself as a leader in both the academic and political arenas. Jeff Root’s induction marks the first father (Merton Root, DPM) and son to be enshrined into the Hall of Fame. Jeff, the 19th non-podiatrist to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, has been a leader in the biomechanics and orthotics field for decades. Full biographies of both honorees can be found in the March Issue of Podiatry Management Magazine.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY - PART 1 |
Always On Call Can Lead to Health Issues: NJ Podiatrist
When doctors are always “on,” they don’t give their nervous systems a chance to toggle between “fight or flight” (sympathetic) and “rest and digest” (parasympathetic). In the short term, high levels of cortisol and adrenaline can impair mood, memory, decision-making, and even increase the risk for medical errors. In the long term? Burnout and damage to the cardiovascular, immune, and nervous systems.

Dr. Catherine Churchill |
“At my practice, I see more than 25 patients a day and typically have limited time to spend with them during their visits,” shared Catherine Churchill, DPM, a podiatrist at Jersey Shore Podiatric Associates, New Jersey, and medical director of Podiatry at ModMed, Boca Raton, Florida. “Too often, not everything can be finished when the office closes, so I’m left working into the evening or concerned about what wasn’t completed that day.” She responds to patient messages and phone calls on nights and weekends.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
6 Ways to Maintain a Healthy Online Presence for Your Practice
Here are some best practices for keeping your online presence up-to-date and effective.
6. Continuously monitor and improve your SEO.
Continuously monitor and improve your website's search engine optimization (SEO) to ensure that you are ranking well in search engine results pages. This can include optimizing your website's content, building high-quality backlinks, and monitoring your website's analytics to identify areas for improvement. While there are numerous tools to track and monitor SEO performance, a quick Google search of ‘your specialty in your city’ can give you a fast and free glance at how you rank in that search engine results page (SERP).

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL) |
RE: Plaque-Like Calluses on Weight-Bearing Surfaces
From: PM News Subscriber
This is a picture after I scraped away most of the plaque-like calluses. From this, I used a skin curette and obtained keratin samples that were sent to the lab for PCR testing. Results in three days. The lab returned: MRSA. I would do this before any invasive biopsy.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM JURY VERDICT REPORTER - PART 1A |
From: Jay Grife, DPM, JD
Dr. Borreggine: there are two sides to your suggestion of maintaining large malpractice coverage limits. Initially the survey quoted is primarily MD summaries and doesn’t reflect DPM awards or settlements. Most are within much lower limits. Also consider that lawyers are businessmen. If a potential defendant has a low-limits policy and it costs approximately $50-60,000 to take a case to trial, where is the pot of gold the doctor suggests awaits that lawyer? Do the math. I am not advocating doctors should go bare, albeit that takes away any impetus for a lawyer to accept a malpractice case; I am suggesting a doctor maintain insurance limits coordinated to their internal risks.
As an aside, expert witnesses are bought and sold by plaintiff and defendant lawyers. Those experts are a detriment to anyone associated with litigation but are simply what the system is. I have a gallery of cases which display blatant negligence yet experts opine it is the standard of care. As a DPM and JD, I would never retain a hired gun expert because it perverts justice for the client and defendant.
Finally, when the state boards allow doctors with numerous lawsuits for malpractice to retain licensure to hurt future patients, there is a problem. It is more common than you might believe.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM JURY VERDICT REPORTER - PART 1B |
From: Allen M. Jacobs, DPM
Here are the numbers that I was able to research. The average podiatry malpractice settlement is reported as $390,000. However, with serious complications such as leg amputation, it's in excess of $500,000. Harnett, et al. (Orthop Review 12(1) 2020) reported that with reference to foot surgery claims, 76.4% are against podiatrists, 15.3% against orthopedic surgeons. Of the claims against podiatrists, 94.5% involved elective foot surgery. Of cases which go to court, plaintiff victories against podiatrists occur in 25.5% of cases with an average award of $911,884. In this study, 83% of plaintiffs were female, and New York was the most frequent site of podiatric malpractice (38.9%).
In another study, Kadakia, et al. (JFAS 61(1), 2022) noted that forefoot surgery was the most common issue (65%) and that adult females were the most common plaintiff. Defendant verdicts were returned in 73% of cases. An NIH study also suggested that 94.5% of malpractice cases against podiatrists followed...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS) |
From: Jay Grife, DPM, JD
Dr. Tomczak is 1,000% on target but I believe he underestimates the negatives of the DPM degree. Our DPM schools do not disclose the negatives that a graduate must endure. The schools preach terms as "physician" which some graduates subscribe to in resumes without disclosure of podiatry. Some graduates emphasize they graduated medical school omitting their DPM background. The survey Dr. Tomczak quotes is enlightening and his conclusions cursory. I suggest that it can be extrapolated to a nationwide consensus that DPM school entrants aren’t 5 star or even 2 star students. For the most part, our schools accept the remainder of MD and DO rejections. It is not a formula for progress.
An example from a DPM I just spoke to: he graduated undergrad with a 4-year degree, went to DPM school for the ensuing 4 years and completed a 3- year residency and 1-year fellowship. I asked how he enjoyed being a DPM to which he responded in summary, "I no longer do any surgery, despite being enticed to join numerous hospital staffs. I do wound care and routine foot care and don’t worry about insurances, rounds, surgical complications, or malpractice." As he drove away in his Bentley convertible, he waved.
