NY Podiatrist Helps Rescue Diabetic's Leg
Roughly two years ago, Lennox Logan came to Long Island Jewish Valley Stream Hospital lugging around a pus-ridden foot that, if not for the resources on hand and the quick-thinking care of its medical staff, would have taken his leg, and potentially his life. Northwell podiatrist Mary Ann Bilotti, DPM, sizing up the foot, immediately knew the situation was critical. “We know that when he came to the emergency room, Mr. Logan had this massive infection which became a medical emergency,” she said.

Logan suffers from diabetic neuropathy of the foot, an all-too-common disease in people with diabetes, especially those who poorly manage their blood sugar levels, in which the body’s nerves become damaged and can lead to a host of life-altering symptoms. Logan could not feel his feet. That loss of sensation, noted Dr. Bilotti, left Logan extremely vulnerable to wounding himself without realizing it. And for a man in his condition, even the slightest of injuries, like stepping on a pebble, if not treated properly, could get seriously infected.

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
8 Billing Tips for Practices
The implementation of these billing tips can be a transformative step towards improving the financial health of your primary care practice.
5. Thorough documentation
Maintain detailed and accurate medical records for each patient. Poor documentation not only affects patient care but can also lead to audit risks and billing disputes. Even if you have not yet been audited, there is always a risk that you will be in the future. And of course, proper documentation is not only required under your insurance payer contract but also required as a part of your state license as a healthcare practitioner.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICARE ADVANTAGE) - PART 1 | |
RE: Medicare "Advantage" Continues to be Disadvantageous
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM
In a recent article, it is projected that Medicare "Advantage" costs will continue to be problematic and result in premium increases to policyholders as well as an increase in costs to beneficiaries for those "extra" benefits not covered by traditional fee-for-service Medicare. For more information click here.
Paul Kesselman, DPM, Oceanside, NY

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICARE ADVANTAGE) - PART 2 | |
From: Mark Spier, DPM
The former chief of CMS has confirmed what most of us already know. Medicare Advantage programs use chart review and up-coding to obtain huge profits. Meanwhile we, the plebeian providers, are still subjected to the crippling sequestration which diminishes the already meager payments we receive. Read the full length article here.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1 | |
RE: Change Clearinghouse Cyberattacks
From: Ben Pearl, DPM
Recent delays in insurance payments due to the Change Clearinghouse cyberattacks have created a strain for physicians’ practices that rely solely on insurance payments for revenue. As of late this week, it is unclear when this national issue affecting physicians will be resolved.
Hopefully, the insurance glitch will be short-lived. It helps to have strategies to counterbalance the delay in cash flow if it continues.
Ben Pearl, DPM, Arlington, VA

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2 | |
From: Ivar E. Roth, DPM, MPH
I have been told by a very reliable source that the new schools opening is like a Ponzi scheme. There are funds available by the feds, etc. that allow these schools to be subsidized. Thus on paper, it can be a money-making proposition; however in reality, we do not have enough students to choose from, thus low enrollment and students with lower MCATs and GPAs are being admitted. We do not have enough residencies if all the schools were filled to capacity based on the number of podiatry schools now open. We are in a tough situation.
I hope everyone reading this post gets energized and goes out and speaks at a local high school or college and promotes our wonderful profession so we can grow in a positive direction for the future. I think our component societies should contact all local high schools and colleges and offer their members as speakers.
Ivar E. Roth, DPM, MPH, Newport Beach, CA
