PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR
IL Podiatrist Discusses How to Buy a Rain Boot

A priority when shopping is to find a pair of boots that “are as waterproof or water-resistant as possible,” Melissa Lockwood, DPM, a podiatrist at Heartland Foot and Ankle Associates in Bloomington, IL, tells Yahoo Lifestyle. Having rain boots that let in moisture can increase your risk of blisters or developing a fungal or bacterial infection, she says.

Dr. Melissa Lockwood

As a rule, you’ll want to avoid galoshes, i.e., boots you wear over your shoes, Lockwood says. These don’t have good support and can put you at risk of developing plantar fasciitis, a painful inflammation of the thick band of tissue that connects your heel bone to your toes, she says. However, boots with a heel are okay and even recommended.

PUBLISHED PODIATRISTS
TX Podiatrist Publishes Thought Provoking Book

Tony Noreiga, DPM’s encouragement for writing his debut book titled Fruit for Thought (published by iUniverse) derives from combined personal experience, study, meditation, and general realization as he goes through his daily walk in life. This book is a cornucopia of original and nuanced inspirational thoughts, philosophical views, one-liners, and poetry meant to encourage people to ponder, enjoy, and re-imagine life.

Dr. Tony Noriega

“Fruit for Thought” is a relatively succinct publication composed of philosophical expressions and inspirational thoughts written to be used as a conversational piece, scholastic inspiration, or an insightful guide. It is an amalgamation of various subjects related to the beauty of life and its challenges.

PHARMACEUTICAL NEWS
FDA Warns of Higher Risk for Death With Gout Drug Febuxostat (Uloric)

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has added a boxed warning to the label for the gout drug febuxostat (Uloric, Takeda) on the basis of results of a large post-marketing safety study. The FDA has concluded that there is an increased risk for death with febuxostat compared to another gout medicine, allopurinol (multiple brands).

"This conclusion is based on our in-depth review of results from a safety clinical trial that found an increased risk of heart-related death and death from all causes with Uloric," the FDA said in a safety communication February 21. The FDA said febuxostat should be reserved for patients for whom allopurinol has failed or who do not tolerate allopurinol. Patients should be counseled about cardiovascular risk with febuxostat and should be advised to seek immediate medical attention if they experience chest pain, shortness of breath, rapid or irregular heartbeat, numbness or weakness on one side of the body, dizziness, trouble talking, or sudden, severe headache.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Key Steps to Mitigating Your Cyber Risk - Part 5

Continuing cyber attacks on healthcare providers emphasize the need for medical practices of all sizes to make cyber security an essential part of their business. Here are some steps to strengthen your practice’s cyber security position.

5. Educate your staff - Your staff can be either your best defense against cyberthreats or your greatest weakness. The most sophisticated technology won’t protect against a staff member inadvertently opening a phishing email, inserting a malware-loaded USB drive into a computer, losing a mobile device, or connecting to an unsafe wi-fi network—all risks that can be mitigated through security awareness training.

An effective security awareness program should teach all staff to understand the threats and vulnerabilities to the practice (phishing, social engineering, lost or stolen mobile devices, outdated software, etc.) and their responsibilities in defending against these threats and vulnerabilities. Broad advice such as “use strong passwords” or “don’t open phishing emails” is meaningless. A more effective approach is to teach staff how to create stronger passwords, how to spot a phishing email, and how to integrate cybersecurity best practices into everyday use. Empower your staff to take an active role in the practice’s cyber security. Provide periodic instruction to reinforce prior learning and enable staff to keep up with constantly changing and evolving cyber security threats.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES)
RE: The Passing of Matilda A. Lenk, DPM

Dr. Matilda A. Lenk  graduated from the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine in Cleveland. She was one of only 10 women podiatrists in her graduating class of 1949 and became the youngest and only woman podiatrist in New Britain when she opened her practice in 1950.

Dr. Matilda Lenk

She spent the next 48 years caring for patients wherever they needed her - in her office, at hospitals, and in nursing homes. She also made house calls to those who could not travel; gaining a reputation for compassion and dedication that was the hallmark of her professional life.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL)
From: Thomas Graziano, DPM, MD

Dr. Caringi's inquiry as to whether or not a longer dorsal arm produces a more "functional and cosmetic result" in a bunionectomy procedure opens up an interesting discussion. Time has a way of enlightening a clinician and providing insight as to what "works" and what doesn't work. My perspective in this discussion comes from over 35 years of experience performing corrective surgery for hallux valgus deformity. I can say that my satisfaction with distal osteotomies of the 1st metatarsal whether short or long has decreased steadily over the years.

I say this because while patient satisfaction is for the most part acceptable, I personally have been disappointed in long-term outcomes. For that reason, I have been routinely performing the Lapidus procedure. From a "corrective" and more "functional" standpoint, it provides superior outcomes when compared to any distal osteotomy. The stability of the first metatarsal cuneiform joint through arthrodesis and the correction obtained cannot be surpassed by any distal osteotomy, no matter what the configuration.
