PODIATRISTS AND MEDICAL MISSIONS
CA Podiatrist Emotional After Philippines Medical Mission

NorthBay Health podiatrist Kevin Miller, DPM still has a hard time not choking up as he shares the stories from a medical mission trip to the Philippines that he and eight other NorthBay providers made last month. He says one patient in particular stands out in his memory: a baby girl named Elizia who was born with a club foot. “She was about 14- to 16-months old,” he said, explaining that a club foot is a congenital deformity that causes the foot to turn inward. If it is not fixed, the child will have lifelong difficulty walking. In the United States it’s typically corrected early with serial castings and close weekly follow-up. “They do not get that there,” he said quietly.

Dr. Kevin Miller and Elizia

When he met Elizia during the Jan. 26-30 Masbate Medical Mission in the Philippines, the deformity had already begun shaping her future in ways that went beyond mobility. In many communities, there is a stigma attached to visible disabilities. “That baby made a big impact on me and others,” said Dr. Miller. “The emotions that come out when you see the rawness of it …”

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY - PART 2
AL Podiatrist is Keynote Speaker at Alexander City Kiwanis Club

Alexander City’s newest podiatrist, Blake Pritchett, DPM, visited the Alexander City Kiwanis Club Thursday and gave an overview of his specialty. “It's really been a career goal of mine to be a hospital-based podiatrist, because it gives me the ability to do every nook and cranny of my profession,” Dr. Pritchett said. “I don't specialize just in sports or just in geriatrics or just in limb salvage. I'm kind of a jack of all trades, which is nice.”

Dr. Blake Pritchett

Dr. Pritchett earned his podiatric medical degree from the Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine and completed his podiatric residency at the University of Louisville Hospital.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Stop Following the Herd: 5 Counterintuitive Habits of Winning Practices

Winning medical practices don't follow trends; they make bold strategic choices. These counterintuitive habits set market leaders apart.

2. Do not get carried away with benchmarking

Practices that dominate the market keep an eye on what competitors are doing, of course, but they do not blindly follow the herd. In fact, they know that using the same technologies, following the same methodologies, and benchmarking the same key performance indicators as your competitors is just a recipe for mediocrity. The leading practices develop a winning strategy that will set them apart in their community (and perhaps in their specialty), and translate their long-term strategic moves into their current projects and performance metrics.

FINANCIAL TIP OF THE DAY
How to Minimize the Risk of an IRS Audit

A number of tax audits result from preventable mistakes. Here are the five most common audit red flags—and what to do to avoid them.

4A. Questionable deductions

While your deductions may be well founded, some may nevertheless trigger a second look by the IRS. In particular, be mindful of:

Outsize charitable donations: The IRS flags charitable deductions that far exceed the average donation of those at a similar income level. Be aware, too, that such deductions are capped at 60% of your adjusted gross income (AGI) for cash donations and 30% of AGI for stocks and other property. And starting in 2026, total charitable donations, including carryover contributions, must exceed 0.5% of your AGI before you may claim a deduction.

Passive losses on a rental property: If the costs to operate a property exceed the rental income it generates, you may not be able to claim a loss—unless:
  • You own at least 10% of the property, you're personally involved in managing it, and your modified adjusted gross income is less than $100,000—or:
  • You're a qualified real estate professional (meaning you spend at least 750 hours annually on such work and it accounts for more than 50% of your annual working hours) and you take an active role in the management of the property.
Unqualified home-office deductions: Unless you're self-employed and conduct the majority of your business from your home, you cannot deduct any home-office expenses. People who work from home may assume they can take this deduction. Unfortunately, regular employees don't qualify, even if they pay out of pocket for all or part of their home-office setup.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (IN THE COURTS)
RE: Liberty Restored - Indictments Against TX Podiatrists Dismissed
From: Walter W. Strash, DPM

Two years ago, my life took an unexpected and irreversible turn. The day had begun like any other—driving to work, listening to a podcast, immersed in the familiar rhythm of routine. By afternoon, that ordinary day had given way to something unimaginable. An FBI agent arrived at my office in the middle of a busy clinic day and presented me with a Target Letter and, with stark finality, said, “You’re going to be indicted.” In that instant, time seemed to divide into before and after. Nothing would ever be the same again.

The days that followed were a blur of urgency, uncertainty, and resolve. I met with a local attorney and soon learned that I had been granted the rare opportunity to appear before the Grand Jury. The notice gave me only four days to prepare. Prayerfully, my wife and I worked side by side, assembling a comprehensive “Grand Jury Packet” for each of the twenty-three jurors—documents that reflected not only the facts, but the truth of my professional conduct and...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (SPORTS MEDICINE)
RE: The 2026 Los Angeles Marathon: Potholes and Injury Prevention
From: Keith Gurnick, DPM

Just ahead of the Los Angeles Marathon, scheduled for next Sunday March 8th, race organizers and city crews are repairing many potholes and road safety hazards caused by recent heavy rainstorms and deferred maintenance. This is an effort to limit potential injuries to participants and observers caused by twisted ankles and falls that could lead to fractures and even fatalities. More than 26,000 runners are expected. The total participants will include hand cyclers, wheelchair participants, and runners of all ages, and groups including elite runners as well. Acute traumatic running injuries can be among the most serious injuries incurred in distance running.

A new comprehensive review pulls together decades of race-day and training data to assess what lower-body injuries actually happen in marathon running, and why? Here were some of the relevant findings. Marathon participation continues to...

YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP
RE: Mrs. Malaprops Returns

A patient came in today for care of dried blood under her nail. She heard that you can get cancer under the nail and wanted to make sure it wasn’t that “Melatonin” type of cancer. I re-assured her that it wasn’t melatonin, or even melanoma. I think that she will sleep better now that she knows she doesn’t have “Melatonin”!
