Hill Training Improves Speed: CT Podiatrist
As we go into the spring running season and the Boston Marathon six weeks away, the method of hill running not only builds muscle strength, but also power and speed. According to sports podiatrist Robert F. Weiss, DPM, "This added strength gives an added push-off and forward recovery of the leg muscles without the fatigue. The hill training method is a more natural way of developing muscles rather than using weight-lifting equipment. This endurance training will improve the ability of the heart to circulate blood throughout the body, which increases the amount of oxygen supplied to working muscles."
|
|
Dr. Robert Weiss |
"However, since hill running causes you to hit the ground harder as you come downhill, there is a greater degree of stress to the muscles and bones, which poses a greater risk for injury. It is therefore important to wear proper footgear with good stability and shock absorption," says Dr. Weiss.

ACFAP Presents Podopediatrics Track at AAPPM Meeting
The American College of Foot & Ankle Pediatrics (ACFAP) recently joined up with the AAPPM for its 2nd annual midwinter meeting podopediatrics track. Included were how-to lectures in growing and conducting a pediatric practice as well as highlighting the pediatric specialty and referral resources.
|
|
Dr. Louis DeCaro |
“Over the past year and a half, many doctors have asked how to increase their pediatric practice. With the help of Drs. Nick Pagano, Tracey Toback, Mr. Rem Jackson, and Ms. Roberta Nole, and me, we helped many achieve that goal. Having the right tools on hand is important to grow, retain, and be successful with any patient, especially in podopediatrics,” said ACFAP president Dr. Louis J. DeCaro. As an affiliate of the APMA, ACFAP’s goal is to educate both its colleagues and the general public on the importance of caring for children’s feet.

|
Dr. Sev Hrywnak |

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL/LEGAL) - PART 1A | |
From: George Jacobson, DPM
There may be general and or specific requirements by your state or state board. For example, you may be required to publish legal notice of the closure with specific information required by your state. Ask a healthcare attorney in your state. When my oncological surgeon passed away a decade ago, I wanted to secure my records. There was a legal notice in the newspaper instructing patients. His estate had a third-party administrator maintain the records for a said period of time. I paid a fee for the records.

From: Ayne Furman, DPM
I closed my office about 6 months ago. Here are some of the steps I have taken so patients can contact me in the future 1) transferred my office phone number to a VOIP line which is a less expensive monthly charge than a business line. I have this line coming into my home 2) posted a notification on my website (which I plan to keep active for several years) for patients to call or email me with questions 3) set-up a post office box so patients have an address to mail their requests for records. 4) maintained a fax number.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (DME) - PART 1A | |
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM
While I was not on this call due to a scheduling conflict, I was told that the meeting with NGS went very well. This meeting was arranged for by APMA and open to all. The presenters of NGS were members of the Provider Outreach and Education (POE) team, not auditors or a Carrier Medical Director (CMD).
Prior to this call, one week earlier, a conference call took place with Dr. Hoover (Region C CMD) and supervisory auditors from CGS, along with some APMA staff and a few others selected by APMA. This call was initiated by the Georgia Carrier Advisory Committee rep, Dr. Len La Russa who himself had 12 of 16 claims slated to go to the ALJ pulled and ordered paid by the supervisor of the auditing staff at CGS. She had researched these claims and found...

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (DME) - PART 1B | |
From: Daniel Chaskin, DPM
If a DPM practices in an area considered by CMS as a "Health Manpower Shortage Area", then that podiatrist may be defined as the "certifying physician" and perform the required DCE.
What about a homebound patient who can only find a NP to perform house calls, and what if MDs refuse to come to the home? Why can't CMS expand its definition of "Health Manpower Shortage Area" to include any homebound patient's address where it is difficult to find an MD willing to perform a house call? Why can't the podiatrist then be defined as the certifying physician?
Daniel Chaskin, DPM, Ridgewood, NY
