DE Podiatrist Provides Walking Program Advice

It's important to have a good pair of walking shoes before you start a walking program. Make sure they fit and that you've broken them in before setting off on any long walk, said Raymond D. Dipretoro, chief of podiatric surgical services at Christiana Care Health System. Now that your feet are equipped, you may want to take the first stabs at getting active. Starting now helps your body get used to the regular exertion, but it also can help you pinpoint walking-related issues before they become a bigger problem, Dipretoro said.

Dr. Raymond D. Dipretoro

Pain in the shins and heels are common complaints of people starting a walking routine. The discomfort can feel like throbbing or tenderness below the knee all the way to the ankle. It's usually the result of tightness in the hamstrings and calves, he said. Taking longer strides than normal also can be the culprit. Adding a stretching component to your workout may relieve this pain, he said.

AT THE COLLEGES

Scholl’s Students Excel at Gait2010 Congress

Scholl’s students, Daniel Miller (class 2012) and Deena Horn (class 2012) represented podiatric researchers in Gait2010 Congress in Washington DC, one of the most prestigious international conferences focusing on gait analysis. This year, over 35 countries from more than 15 different disciplines participated in this Congress.

Daniel Miller, Scholl, 2012, during poster-walk presentation at Gait2010

Daniel Miller's poster was selected as a poster walk, which is equivalent to an oral presentation. He introduced his summer research study about the benefits of foot orthoses on better gait initiation. Deena Horn's poster related to the impact of various sensory feedback on postural control and also received great attention from the experts in the field. Both abstracts were selected to be published in an online supplement to the Journal of Parkinsonism & Related Disorders.

Orthofeet

 I love Orthofeet…

"Orthofeet is my company of choice for diabetic shoes and inserts – their products are great and at the same time inexpensive. The company is very reliable, and their customer service is excellent. I would recommend them to all my colleagues."  Henry Tseng, DPM

"You are geniuses of shoe design. Your shoes have changed my life. For years I searched for shoes that would fit my wide toe area and narrow heel. As soon as I tried on Orthofeet it was love at first fit. At age 60 plus I can out-walk everyone I know, even those a third my age."  Vivian Imperiale.

Orthofeet Shoes = Superior Patients Care + Better Bottom Line:
Shoes - $45 to $55; Prefab Inserts - $9.95; Custom Inserts - $23; Toe-Filler - $75.00;

PODIATRISTS AND THE HAITIAN RELIEF EFFORT

FL Podiatrist Recalls Humor Amidst the Haitian Earthquake Tragedy

The volunteers on CRUDEM medical teams returned from Haiti with many heart-warming stories, including humorous ones: One day, a group came through the tents, handing out care packages. One man, a double amputee, excitedly opened his bag and pulled out ... a pair of socks. You could see the disappointment on his face. Socks? For a man with no feet? But whatever sadness he felt was fleeting, lasting only until the man on the cot next to him opened his bag and pulled out ... women's underwear. They all burst into laughter.

Dr. Joseph Sindone in Haiti

When Joe Sindone, a podiatrist from Shands Jacksonville, retold this story, he said he had prepared himself to find a lot of things on his first trip to Haiti. The poverty, the bad roads, the earthquake injuries. But he hadn't expected to go there, especially now, and find humor. And yet at every turn, in every tent, amid the pain and suffering, there were smiles and laughter.

HEALTHCARE LEGISLATION

White House Okay on Healthcare Without GOP

The White House's top healthcare official is optimistic that Democrats will have the votes to pass a major healthcare overhaul. Presidential adviser Nancy-Ann DeParle says it makes sense to have a "simple up-or-down vote" on legislation, now that Democrats lack the 60 votes necessary to overcome a Republican filibuster. The Senate's Democratic leaders are trying to devise a strategy for passing the legislation with a simple 51-vote majority. There are 57 Democrats in the Senate and two Democratic-leaning independents.

DeParle notes that the House and Senate already have passed versions of healthcare overhaul. She tells NBC's Meet the Press that she believes "we will have the votes to pass this in Congress."

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL)

RE: Using the Internet for Recruitment of Office Staff (Bob Levoy)
From: Michael Marcus, DPM

I have used Craig’s List. It is extremely reasonable and very effective. Within two days, I received more than 40 faxed resumes. Newspaper ads are expensive and minimally effective compared to this method. Don't hesitate.

RE: Medicare Cuts
From: Multiple Respondents

When I became non-participating in Medicare and private insurance a year and a half ago, I thought I had researched my decision well. Consequently, I was surprised to hear of a law that prohibits physicians from charging more than 120% of Medicare’s allowable fee.  Could Dr. Trattner cite the source of his legal information?

I commend any podiatrist who is considering dropping insurance.  I am very pleased with my choice.

Ray McClanahan, DPM, Portland, OR, footdr@nwfootankle.com

I agree 100% with Dr. Kashan that congressional phone calls are necessary and effective. He references the APMA political website and the zip code. However, after entering your zip code, an e-mail option is also offered to the APMA member. I have been personally assured at local meetings with my Congressman, Mac Thornberry, that he reads AND acts on e-mails as if they were phone calls. This is another highly effective option. APMA presents a form letter which can be sent as an e-mail or used as talking points.

Pete Harvey, DPM, Wichita Falls, TX, pmh@wffeet.com

I have heard in the past that when an organization appears to have a self-serving agenda, it generally receives a cool reception (Asking for the delay in Medicare cuts 21%). Rather than have 16,000 podiatrists angry, what would happen if we "delayed" seeing our Medicare patients for two weeks until such time as an appropriate reimbursement is reached? I am not suggesting abandoning our patients but merely creating a bit of an inconvenience (making millions of people angry) with an explanation to them as to what is transpiring.  Perhaps, by enlisting the assistance of those most DIRECTLY affected by these changes, we can gather a significant groundswell that will keep our Senators listening, in an ELECTION year.

RE: Fitness Shoes Work - Sometimes: TX Podiatrist
From: Cam White

Stable or Unstable? Which type of rocker-sole shoe is the best? At present, there are over 43 brands of rocker-sole "functional fitness" shoes on the market, with more coming. Patients will be bombarded with advertising and will, no doubt, have questions about which brand they should buy. To cut through the noise and the hype surrounding these shoes, I wrote an article and produced a video about the therapeutic benefits of these shoes, and the similarities and differences between brands within this category. Here's a link to the article and video:

RESPONSES / COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) - PART 2

RE: No Senate Action on SGR; Pay Cut Looms
From: Jon Purdy, DPM

That’s not quite the entire story. Sen. Bunning said he couldn't live with the bill, which also would have temporarily extended unemployment benefits, COBRA subsidies, and other programs, because Senate Democrats hadn't figured out a way to pay for it, and thus would be adding to the already swollen federal deficit.

Again, we are witnessing politicians playing political games with our country’s best interests. These last-minute backdoor dealings, and eleventh hour additions to what may have been a good piece of legislation are typical. Although both sides may agree on the main point and purpose of a piece of legislation, additions are made to gain political strongholds on what may be an unpopular piece of legislation.

For important pieces of legislation, voting members then have to decide how willing they are to compromise their principles for the success of the main piece of legislation both sides have already agreed upon. They also have to weigh how their constituents will view their final vote. They know full well that the public will never have reported to them the full scope of what was being voted on.  They will only go down, in this case, as having voted AGAINST doctors.

It just amazes me that a significant number of our population is willing to place their own and their family’s well being in the hands of these legislators.
