Podiatry Beneficial to Heart Health: MI Podiatrist
According to Conway McLean, DPM, "One out of twenty Americans suffers from some form of heart disease. Heart disease, more accurately termed ‘cardiovascular disease’ (CVD), takes the lives of about 18 million people per year. How often does the typical cardiologist’s visit include a recommendation for exercise? It’s a frequent occurrence since the heart is a muscle, arteries have muscle in their walls, and as we all know, muscles need to be exercised to be strong. Muscle tissue gets weak if not worked, so the next question is how best to do that? The most common suggestions for exercise by heart doctors is biking, walking, or swimming."
|
|
Dr. Conway McLean |
"Walking is the way to go for most Americans looking to get some exercise, favored since it gets you outside, breathing (hopefully) fresh air. As is predictable, it is of great benefit to have foot pain treated, with a physician specializing in that part of the body being likely the most productive. The focus of much of podiatric therapies and research is to get people on their feet, walking well, safely, and comfortably," says Dr. McLean.

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
8 Billing Tips for Practices
The implementation of these billing tips can be a transformative step towards improving the financial health of your primary care practice.
4. Frequent and nproactive denials management
Actively follow up on denied claims and address the issues promptly. Letting accounts receivable (AR) build up can lead to financial complications and decreased revenue. Analyzing denial patterns, rectifying errors, and re-submitting claims correctly are essential steps. In particular, don’t leave denial follow-ups to biweekly or monthly batched processes. The best practice is to build denials into your standard, weekly claims, and payment posting processes. In addition, the first time you receive a denial, your billing team should call the insurance payer to understand the reason behind the denial. This way, you can prevent the same error from occurring in future claims.

RE: The Passing of W. Larry Lundy, DPM
Dr. W. Larry Lundy, 95, was an acclaimed podiatrist, businessman, and community servant. He attended the Illinois College of Podiatric Medicine where he earned his podiatric medical degree in 1956. Excited about working as a podiatrist, Dr. Lundy did his residency in Chicago where he also met his wife, Mary.

|
Dr. W. Larry Lundy |
In 1960, the young couple moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where Dr. Lundy set up his podiatry practice and their son and daughter were born. He became a clinical instructor at the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine, teaching podiatry students. In 1969, Dr. Lundy was recruited to be the first African American ambulatory foot surgeon in Dallas, Texas.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) | |
RE: Ankle Privileges in Massachusetts
From: Raymond S. Murano, DPM, MEd
I have seen some misinformation being stated from APMA representatives and other uninformed colleagues. I would like to set the record straight by stating that in Massachusetts, we have promulgated regulations that podiatrists who are board certified and have additional training and education can do ankle surgery.
We are leaving the credentialing to each individual hospital. Currently in Massachusetts, there are podiatrists performing ankle joint replacements, and all other forms of ankle surgery are within their scope of practice.
Raymond S. Murano, DPM, Med, Medford, MA

|
| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PUBLISHED PODIATRISTS) - PART 1A | |
From: Brett Ribotsky, DPM
Three observations/comments I need to make on this topic:
1) Incredible accolades should go to Dr. Scherer for being the most published podiatrist ever on onychomycosis, including winning three Stickel awards. Currently, this paper written with Dr. Gupta (The world authority on onychomycosis) should be acknowledged, and respected by all of us.
2) I am shocked that Dr. Markinson, who is a podiatric expert on dermatolgy, could not find 5 to 10 minutes out of his day to read the article that Drs. Scherer/Gupta authored.
3) To Dr. Roth, I am incredibly excited on what you may have discovered. I’m willing to offer you $10 million plus royalties for the right to distribute this product, should it prove its success unequivocally. Onychomycosis is the number one disease in the world and should your treatment algorithm be reproducible and successful, it may be a greater invention than insulin.
Brett Ribotsky, DPM, Fort Lauderdale, FL
|
|
| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PUBLISHED PODIATRISTS) - PART 1B | |
From: Elliot Udell, DPM
Drs. Scherer and Bakotic say that 59.4% of nails studied are positive for mycosis. Dr. Markinson, who tests prior to initiating treatment, finds it to be 85%, and Dr. Roth feels that he can return "ugly" nails to normal without the need for any testing. Oddly, everyone is correct. The one proverbial "elephant" in the room that is missing is the psychology of what brings patients with thick, yellow, odorous nails into podiatric offices. It's not to find a pathogen. It's to get a better cosmetic result for their feet or eliminate pain. If isolating a pathogen will help, then testing should be done. In our office, we side with Dr. Markinson and send specimens to the lab prior to treatment.
If Dr. Roth has a technique that will treat all dystrophic and mycotic nails, he will make patients happy and he should publish his technique so that all podiatrists and patients can benefit from his findings. Most of us would gladly try his technique on patients, especially those suffering from recalcitrant nail conditions.
Elliot Udell, DPM, Hicksville, NY
|
|
| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PUBLISHED PODIATRISTS) - PART 1C | |
From: John Lanthier, DPM
Will Dr. Roth write up and publish his treatment protocols for these dystrophic nails so that the professional community may evaluate their success and efficacy, or will this be a trade secret? This is not meant to be sarcasm but a general question so that our patients can benefit from these protocols, as benefiting the public is the true nature of a profession.
John Lanthier, DPM, Sudbury Ontario, Canada
