Pandemic Has Taken its Toll on Feet: PA Podiatrist
Foot pain has been on the rise during the pandemic, as people working from home kicked off their supportive shoes in favor of flimsy slippers and flip-flops, while others used the time to become more active, which put new strain on their feet. "In March 2020, I said ... 'Oh, my goodness, everyone is going to have plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinitis,'" recalled Laura Virtue-Delayo, DPM, President of the Pennsylvania Podiatric Medical Association.
|
|
Dr. Laura Virtue-Delayo |
Her prediction panned out: podiatrists, orthopedic surgeons, and physical therapists say they're seeing more cases of plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinitis -- two common foot-pain conditions -- than ever before. Dr. Virtue-Delayo, a Scranton-based podiatrist, said her caseload of foot pain patients peaked over the summer, when she was treating about 35 percent more people for foot pain than usual. The number of new patients with foot pain has gone down but remains above pre-pandemic levels, she said.

IN Podiatrist Dispels Myth That People Have to Live With Foot Pain
According to Nathan Graves, DPM people typically seek medical care for their feet when they begin experiencing or noticing pain. "A lot of people think they have to live with foot pain at the end of the day after they get done at their job," Graves said, though this is untrue. He explained that there are numerous options available, such as medication, surgery, shoe inserts, and exercise routines.
|
|
Dr. Nathan Graves |
Once foot pain is noticed, Dr. Graves said it is important to visit your doctor, as foot pain requires quick treatment to have a fast, easy recovery. Graves noted that it is extremely important that people take care of their feet and take measures to prevent foot pain or damage. "If your feet hurt, everything hurts," he said.

OH Podiatrist Discusses How to Prevent Achilles Injuries
According to Mark Mendeszoon, DPM, "The Achilles tendon is the largest and strongest tendon in the body. Ninety percent of people who live in Western society have a tight Achilles tendon due to wearing shoes; this condition is called Achilles equinus. When the leg is perfectly straight, the foot should be able to dorsiflex (move inward toward the leg) 10 degrees past a right angle (90 degrees). When the Achilles tendon does not have the flexibility, this deformity is a major link into faulty biomechanics and overcompensation which can cause soft tissue injuries like lower back pain, iliotibial band syndrome, patella tendonitis, Achilles tendinitis, posterior tibial tendinitis, peroneal tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, and Morton's neuromas, to name a few."
|
|
Dr. Mark Mendeszoon |
"So how can eager runners prevent this from happening? Emphasize your lower body in your warm-up routines. Honing flexibility throughout the body is important, but really emphasizing range of motion and stretching of the Achilles tendon can be essential to prevent overuse injury in your lower extremities. Work to mitigate Achilles problems by including static stretching, like hanging your heels down on a step or performing the wall stretch. Using a night splint or sock can also be very effective. Dynamic stretching with an exercise band works not only on flexibility, but also dynamic strength," says Dr. Mendeszoon.

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
Coding Mistakes That Cause Practices to Lose Revenue
These are only five areas of improper coding that lead to lost revenue; however, focusing on this list should make a significant, positive difference for the financial and operational well-being of your medical practice.
4. Missed Administrative - Procedure Codes
Providers often miss administrative procedure codes for minor treatments, which can be a significant amount of lost revenue. This includes codes for injections, immobilization, etc. Administering injections is among the most routine services provided in a primary care or urgent care practice, but one inoculation includes two codes: a CPT code for the injection, and a separate code for the medication or vaccination provided.
Modifier -25 may also be applied if other care is being given. Another example of oversight can occur when placing a splint on a limb. There are two codes to enter: one for the application and another code for the supply item, such as a splint or a cast.
