OH Podiatrist Discusses Running Shoes for Those with Flat Feet
For those with flat feet, picking the right pair of running shoes means following a few rules for support. The flat foot can also cause instability of the foot bones, which then puts more stress on ligaments, tendons, and muscles, says Scott Spencer, DPM, associate professor at Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine. “These structures try to stabilize the foot, and as a result, they can get injured or damaged in the process,” he explains. “One thing to keep in mind is that having flat feet isn't necessarily bad. There are many people with flat feet that have no problems at all.”
|
Dr. Scott Spencer |
If you have flat feet and experience discomfort, it might show up in the form of shin splints, pain in the posterior tibial tendon (or the tendon behind the shin bone that supports the arch), Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, midfoot arthritis, or ankle or knee joint conditions, according to Dr. Spencer.

CT Podiatrist Returns to Nigeria for Annual Medical Mission
Chioma Odukwe Enu, DPM recently returned from Enugu state, Nigeria for a second successful medical outreach. Chioma was joined by Drs. Christopher and Ikay Enu, optometrists and dental hygienists who saw over 800 patients.

Data processing of common diseases collected from 2017 and 2018 demonstrates that high blood pressure, visual difficulty, osteoarthritis, and allergic disorders were the most common health problems seen in Nigeria.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY |
MI Podiatrist Is Board President of Educational Choice Center
James Schelberg, DPM, a podiatrist, knew he had a lot of catching up to do in 2012, when he became president of the board of the Michigan Educational Choice Center, a network of charter schools in Detroit. He was disappointed to learn that he wouldn’t get much help. “There was no training,” he recalled. “None. We just kind of jumped into it.” He said he had to play catch-up on questions about governance and compliance.
|
Dr. James Schelberg |
Dr. Schelberg says he’s a beneficiary of Central Michigan’s focus on training. He has already attended one training and expects to attend at least one more before the end of the school year. “And they push us to take more,” he said. “Which is a good.”

Health Risk of Wearing Secondhand Shoes Low: CA Podiatrist
When it comes to secondhand shopping, there’s undoubtedly a market for shoes. In fact, according to the area manager for Buffalo Exchange consignment stores in New York, Alyson Lutynski, footwear is one of the chain’s best-selling category of items. The thought of slipping into another person’s shoes may seem gross to some, but according to California-based podiatrist Diane Koshimune, DPM most shoppers have little reason to be concerned about their health being affected in doing so.
|
Dr. Diane Koshimune |
“The safety of wearing used shoes should be considered carefully in high-risk patients who are immunocompromised [or have a reduced ability to fight off infections],” said Dr. Koshimune. “However, gently used shoes that have been properly cleaned and deodorized should not negatively impact the foot health of a new owner.”

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Key Steps to Mitigating Your Cyber Risk - Part 3
Continuing cyberattacks on healthcare providers emphasize the need for medical practices of all sizes to make cybersecurity an essential part of their business. Here are some steps to strengthen your practice’s cybersecurity position.
3. Restrict access to data - Not every staff member needs, or should have, access to all of your practice’s data. Staff should have access only to data they need to properly perform their job functions. Determine access and privileges by following a three-tiered data classification system which restricts access according to data sensitivity.
Public data is non-sensitive data that poses no risk to the practice or patients, requires minimal security, and may be accessed by all staff. Private data is moderately sensitive data that poses a relatively low risk, but should be handled guardedly with limited staff access. Sensitive data is data that if compromised could cause severe damage and requires a high level of security. Access to sensitive data should be permitted only on a need-to-know basis. All data should be accessible only with user authentication to verify the person accessing the data, and audit logs should be created to monitor access.

QUERIES (CLINICAL) |
Query: IM angle correction from Austin Bunionectomy
From: Greg Caringi, DPM
I understand that it is the lateral displacement of the distal capital fragment that effectively reduces the gap between the metatarsals, but it does not directly reduce the IM angle. With improved overall alignment of the soft tissues, an acceptable cosmetic and functional result is obtained without the potential drawbacks of proximal osteotomies/fusions.
My question deals with the length of the dorsal arm of the osteotomy. Although many believe that the degree of correction improves with a longer arm, I know that there have been papers published that refute this idea, stating that the long arm simply facilitates rigid internal fixation with screws. I am asking my colleagues their opinion on the long dorsal arm. Does it help with IM correction? Can anyone supply references that address this subject?
Greg Caringi, DPM, Lansdale, PA

RE: Axolotl Biologics (David Kahan, DPM)
From: Steven E Tager, DPM
I practice podiatry within a family practice with MD and PA providers. Feet, as well as other body parts, are also treated. The practice has injected Axolotl A about 9 times in both feet and knees. I must admit that I am a skeptic and considering the alternative in these cases, I felt the patient had very little to lose (except some money) since the alternative was surgery. To our mutual surprise, all but one case improved dramatically.
The failure was a hand with end-stage O/A of the 1st metacarpal phalangeal joint. The remaining cases were B/L end-stage hallux rigidus (95% relief), 4 knees with O/A after multiple steroid injections, PRP, and Hyalgan by others, with almost 100% relief, one slap tear of a shoulder with 100% relief, and one attenuated AT with 100% relief. The hallux rigidus and knees were also treated with rigid rear foot posted Root functional orthotics to control the involved pathomechanics.
Disclosure: I have no association with the company other than being a customer.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS) |
From: Wenjay Sung, DPM
I have found donating to APMAPAC and my state PPAC (California) has been the best way to achieve parity and achieve actual results. Yes, I’ve made numerous positive relationships and have been a shining example of working with our allopathic and osteopathic brethren, but the best dollar spent toward parity has been investing in our leaders in APMA, ACFAS, and state components (mostly California) in terms of results.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM ARTICLES) |
From: Allen Sherman, DPM
Since publishing my two pieces on the “Advanced Surgery Divide - Is Podiatry a Surgical Specialty or is Surgery a Sub-Specialty of Podiatry?” and “A New Direction in Podiatric Residency Training – Dual Track Third Year”, I have read only very positive responses and a lot of personal identification with the issues expressed. I was waiting for a serious rebuttal, because as I have acknowledged, this represents an important identity re-adjustment for podiatry, and the changing of the structure of the third year of residency education will be a challenge.
So I thank John L. Trench III, DPM for providing an all-out emotional assault on everything that I observed and proposed, as I look forward to addressing each of his observation and...
