Veterans Who Claimed Mistreatment by Podiatrist Can Proceed with Lawsuits
A lawsuit alleging mistreatment of veterans’ ankle and foot problems at the Veterans Affairs hospital in Togus, Maine can go forward, a federal judge ruled Friday. The ruling by U.S. District Judge Jon Levy will allow lawsuits for five of the six vets to move ahead after he had dismissed the cases two years ago, ruling that a statute of limitations had expired before the lawsuits had been filed. The vets claimed that the poor treatment they were given by a podiatrist at Togus left them with severe pain that limited their ability to walk.
The VA eventually reviewed the cases handled by the podiatrist and called in dozens of veterans to tell them that their ailments had been handled badly and discuss how to move forward. The six veterans filed their lawsuits against the VA shortly after that disclosure, but in the previous ruling, Levy said they had failed to file them within three years of the treatment that caused their problems. However, in that ruling, he allowed the veterans to pursue an argument that the mistreatment had been “fraudulently concealed” from them.

4 Areas for Practices to Focus on in 2018 - Part 1
In working with a variety of providers on solutions to address today’s biggest market pressures, we’ve identified four key areas in which practices should invest time and resources to be successful:
1. Inventory Management
The critical success factor for a medical practice lies in gaining financial and operational control of its drug inventory. Even a single instance of a missed drug unit can cost thousands of dollars. Maintaining optimal inventory levels by utilizing an inventory management system with full visibility into every unit of medication will help plug potential profit leaks. By using an inventory management system, practices can see where cash flow is clogged and adjust.
When practices can see their full inventory at once, they can make smart decisions based on patient scheduling, and ensure that the right product is in the right place at the right time. When evaluating inventory management models, practices should also consider options with payment verification components. This way, practices can follow drug doses from the time they are placed into inventory, through the billing cycle, until full payment is received.

Query: Diplaced Tibia Fracture
My patient fractured her anterior malleolus of tibia (displaced & closed). I can only find codes for medial and lateral. The doctor is telling me that it is anterior. What code would you use for this?

Response: I suspect that there is a little miscommunication in this situation. Trauma is the primary focus of my practice and I have never heard the term “anterior malleous” of the tibia. I suspect that the doctor might be referring to a pilon fracture. I recommend confirming that as it directly affects the coding.

RE: Lack of Podiatric Authors in Our Journals (Joseph Borreggine, DPM)

I agree with the remarks of Joseph Borreggine, DPM about the lack of podiatric authors in our journals, a phenomenon that I believe needs some attention. To accomplish that, more emphasis needs to be made in the education and training of podiatric physicians in the research process at the level of both residency and undergraduate podiatric medical education. Expanding that emphasis could result in an increase in the production of a critical mass of podiatric medical research and scholarly articles reporting on such activities.
Not only are there a lack of articles reporting on research findings in podiatric medical journals, but also in journals of other medical specialties that would find such information useful as well and result in expanding the awareness of other health professionals about the depth and role of our profession.

There are many reasons for the lack of DPM-produced research and more non-DPMs publishing in our journals.
Most podiatric students and residents are not required to actually complete written and publishable research during their training. There may be less "perceived value or need". As I interview fellowship candidates, I am able to see how much research they are actually required to complete. Most are case studies. There was a time where podiatrists were trying to document their cases and show the pathology they were capable of seeing. Publishing was the only way to...

Kudos to Ms. McCormick for bringing this issue to light regarding continued use of chemicals to "disinfect" podiatry instruments. From what I recall, most of those chemicals only sterilize an instrument after 6-8 hours or more of being immersed. Since most podiatry offices are turning over a patient every 15-30 minutes, there is serious potential for spread of onychomycosis, MRSA, Hep C, etc. from patient to patient if these chemicals are utilized.
There will be others that disagree, but there is no excuse to not have an autoclave and sterilize every instrument between patient use! Autoclaves are not that expensive and we have advanced beyond chiropody. Those that are still using chemicals are no better than some of the pedicure salons that...
